Little fact Chris Terrill is the only civilian and at 55 the oldest, to have been awarded the commando green beret. He earned it whilst filming a documentary on Royal Marines basic training. He completed all four commando phases and was awarded and honorary green beret.

In the 90's back in the RAF, once you had left trade training and joined the real mans RAF. Fitness went out of the window, I found that disgusting even to this day, you had SGT's who were out of breath tying up their shoe laces. It was a chargeable offence though, even though I don't think that many did get charged, but I really did miss my PT. You would play a bit of sports outside of work, such as five a side, and I used to play tennis at times, but that was about it. However, to have ship gyms on a ship is very lucky to say the least.

Errr no its not. Its 130 feet longer in the bow because of catapults but has a narrower flight deck. It has a bigger displacement (100,000 tons vs 70,000 tons) but is so old tech it needs 4,500 crew unlike the QE that is designed to work with 1,600 crew. The Ford cost $18 Bn+ while the QE cost $5 Bn....go figure! But do get back to us when the USS Gerald R Ford actually works and is combat ready.
@bakerz129
@bakerz129 4 жыл бұрын
@@1chish The Ford class carriers of the US navy are the most advanced and largest aircraft carriers in the world, pretty much every nation recognizes this. Look up the most advanced carrier, or the largest carrier. The Ford is faster, carries almost twice the aircraft, and can launch and recover much faster.
@TT-hd3zi
@TT-hd3zi 4 жыл бұрын
Andrew Baker all 3 points you made are false. Neither of these ships have stated their actual top speeds. A ski jump has much faster sortie rates over a 24hr period than catapults. The QE can carry 75 aircraft full load, the Gerald R Ford around 90. Not quite ‘twice as much’.

Life aboard may be heavily planned, but it's too bad the ships themselves weren't. What were they thinking, not doing CATOBAR? It locked them out of so many options.

Aircraft for CATOBAR have to navalised, so the selection isn't that much bigger. And catapults and traps put a lot more stress on both the ship and aircraft.

@@Avionicx why is the F18 an actual fighter and the F35 not? We're the carriers at Midway not aircraft carriers because they couldn't fly an F18? And back to basics why do you think you know better than the Royal Navy and the US Navy and all the other actual Navies that call HMS QE an aircraft carrier.

First of all, an Aircraft carrier is always protected by a group of ships. Usually consisting of a cruiser, submarines, a destroyer squadron of at least 2 destroyers or frigates and a team of fighter jets that will shoot down any enemy planes miles before they can reach the carrier. Target? Yes. Vulnerable? Nope.

@@kyle-hx8qk Nuclear power greatly increases the cost of a carrier and the specialists needed to operate it. Even then a nuclear carrier is only useful as long as it has aviation fuel and it only carries about a month's worth of fuel before it needs to be refuled.
