Күн бұрын

On our last episode of Conversations Over Coffee for season 2 we discuss what it's like to live with a mental illness and how our special guest Debrae overcame having suffered from an episode of psychosis.
Debrae opens up about the condition and how it affected the way her brain processed information. She delves deep into how she lost touch with reality all of which was triggered by extreme stress and a traumatic experience.
Join us as we learn about Debrae's experience during her period of having psychosis, what she found disturbing and how her family and friends where the pillar of strength that helped her overcome and get back to having good mental health.
Debrae has written a book title Metamorhosis, its her debut collection from Deborah 'Debrae' Ojelade- Akintonde, and is a consolidation of written
material that offers insight into her real-life experiences of trauma, depression, heartbreak, and emotional turmoil.
Purchase the book here:- Metamorphosis www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B095GQGBT...

It's quite hard to find content featuring black women who have been through this specific mental health challenge. Thankful to Debrae and the host for this episode. Recovering from a psychotic break myself, really needed this

This made me cry 😭, thank you for sharing your story. I have been through something similar and my mom was supportive but from another continent, it’s difficult when you don’t have a huge support system. ❤

Could you please say more on how your mom was supportive from another continent, what did she do to make you feel supported?

She lives in Africa whilst I live in Europe, I left home more than 5 years ago. Well when I had my break down after I had gotten help and came to, she would just stay on the phone with me and It really helped that she opened her mind and disregarded the stigma of mental health that is present in the part of Africa I come from. She would always ask questions that seem mundane but helped a lot in my daily life adjusting back into a life that looked and felt different from what I had before. Question like : what are you thinking about now, have you taken a shower today, have you gotten anything to eat, would you like to take a walk. Obviously it would have been much more helpful if she was there with me but it helped me so much in the few weeks after my discharge from psych because I wouldn’t talk to anyone else because it just didn’t feel safe. She would also reinforce that what happened would not and didn’t have to define me as a person, how I’d look back in the future and be grai made it through… things like that😊

I was diagnosed with schizzoaffective disorder back in 2016 psychosis is a sicko im glad that now more than ever the stigma surrounding mental illnesses is slowly changing for the better, people are becoming more educated on it and more and more people are feeling safe and comfortable to speak up about their own struggles humanity still has a long way to go but I have noticed a big shift in this area when it comes to the stigma alot of it is thanks to social media and that fact that it is easier for people to connect to eachother and spread knowledge with the power of technology
