Telling someone who is extremely upset or in crisis to “calm down” is the most unhelpful thing

As a kid in the foster system, mostly homeless and on the streets, I was in and out of the juvenile system. I caught my first charge at the age of 9 years old and it was downhill from there. I was lucky enough that none of my charges carried over as an adult. But as soon as I was about to turn 18, I did everything I could to get my act together. Finally turned 18, got a job, my own place, and kept my head down and kept trucking. Haven’t been in trouble since. I feel bad for a lot of these kids…I hope they are able to find inner peace and realize that things can be better. Good luck youngens.

I felt so sad when the officer said “you’re a grown man, you have to control your anger”. He’s not a grown man, he’s just a kid. A kid with a troubled life. I hope things get better for him

It's amazing how many incidents in juvenile facilities can be a direct result of how staff address issues with youth.

I really appreciate the questions the lady behind the camera asks those kids. Those are not "look down questions", not patronizing ones, just questions from someone who really cares and wants to understand.

Awe I just want to give him a hug. What a broken young man. He is so angry and needs to be shown that someone cares about him and values him.

My heart is for broken teenager. I worked in a high school for 6 years, I loved every minute of it. One student told in that he looked forward to coming to lunch because there was no pressure. And we could joke around together. Yes I was the lunch lady manager. I alway treated them with respect. Because you never knew what they were going through at home, with a girlfriend or boyfriend or even a step parent. I loved all my students. We started out with about 50 to 75 students & when I left we were up to 300 to 350.

This breaks my heart 😔 even though he is in prison I am happy that you can tell the staff actually care about him instead of treating him like a number. It kinda broke my heart when he said he is a grown man. He is only 19… 🤦🏻‍♀️ like if he had the proper role models in life and people helping him maybe he would be mature like a “grow man” but he didn’t he is still a kid… 🤦🏻‍♀️

Many of the kids including myself didn’t realize what I was doing and how I was acting wasn’t right, while many of us didn’t have home lives that made us care whether we were in jail or not while the probation and juvie system wouldn’t help and only try to keep you locked up and mad af

I lived a life resembling some of these quality’s that get these kids in trouble. No I was no where near 90% as bad as this but I made mistakes we all make mistakes. Situations and circumstances like what the kid is going through break my heart. This is the reason why I want to be a youth motivational speaker.

The kid at the very beginning , trying to act like a big tough guy but he has tears in his eyes. He is hurting .

In '89 I was placed in juvie because I kept running away. I first ran from my abusive family, 3 times they tried to make me go home and after the 3rd time I stopped trusting the system to help. Nobody believed my dad raped me, starved, and beat me. When I ended up in juvie I was broken, and I kept acting up to express my pain. I feel sorry for the staff now. I was horrible, but I hurt so bad I couldn't help it. It took tons of therapy and medication to get me where I am 30 years later. Some of these kids are broken, they need love even when they don't want it. They need somebody to believe them, and believe in them. The pain is real. Today though it's been 30 years I still wake in a cold sweat, afraid. And I see red everytime a kid dies, or is irrevocably damaged because the system ignores them.

I have been able to find a slight update on Jacob, for those who are interested. He was incarcerated sometime in 2017 for a charge related to traffic, as well as a charge relating to meth. He also had another for public intimidation. I am assuming he got out because he had posted some stuff on Facebook around 2018. Unfortunately, in 2021, he was caught trying to meet a 15 year old for sex. He would’ve been around 31 at this time. It is unclear whether he got incarcerated for this or not. He was caught by a KZfaq group and not law enforcement officials, so it is very much possible he could have gotten away with it. Since he was not pursued by law enforcement, i can neither confirm or deny the credibility of this accusation. The most recent activity I have found from him was from February 2022. It seems he is no longer in jail, but still struggling with drugs. I hope he is able to get some help. I am in no means defending his actions, especially the one regarding the 15 year old, but it is incredibly sad to see where he is now. He had absolutely no support in life from the very beginning. It seems it is still that way. He needs help; he needs support, and he needs someone that can lead him down the right path. Jacob is a troubled man, he was troubled as a kid thanks to his shitty parents, and he will remain troubled unless there is someone who is willing to help him. I wish I could go back to 2007 and help this young man. He needed someone to give him confidence and help him get his life together yet no one showed. I don’t want to hear ‘he could have done this himself’ or ‘he makes his own decisions’... he doesn’t KNOW HOW to make those decisions, because no one was present to help him learn good vs bad. This man needs someone. Immediately.

Poor kid was failed by everyone in his life at such a young age. I hope he turned his life around.

This here is another form of our business of law enforcement! One thing we’re faced with in these settings is the unpredictable mind of a youth or child. These kids need to be paid attention to and to get help with healing. These kids need to be loved and to know that they have value.

Bounced from home to home, treated like garbage, abused, then thrown into a jail because they aren’t raised right with no intensive psychiatric treatment or care…and people wonder why these kids can’t control themselves!? What do people expect? You see people get a hard time for rehoming their dog because it’s traumatic and yet how many kids are out there just being treated like trash every day?

This poor child brings heartfelt tears. He just needs to control his temper as all the people he comes across are going to tell him what to do. He cannot take off at them. He has been sent to so many places and witnessed lots of wrong conduct. He needs to be shown love not incarceration.

These kids need counseling, mental healthcare, guidance and love. Who knows what their childhoods looked like. My guess is not good.

I worked at a detention center and an industrial school for boys. I never had to cuff a child nor did they wear uniforms. They wore their own clothing. The institutions should change their ways in dealing with children. I don't think they should be like prisons for adults.

Don't they realize this kid has been forced into institutionalization ALL HIS F*ING LIFE...?! Why treat him like some hardened criminal. Any aggressive behavior is just his way of pushing back for some kind of independence. He had no freedom, no place to go, to friends to visit, no job or school to go to, no relatives to visit, not car to drive, no place to just hang out and think. My god! Anyone would go nuts being treated like this from childhood on.

More amazing parents don’t raise good kids. To many parents want to be friends with kids and not parents. I was on my own at 14 my home life was horrible everything you can imagine. The past don’t need to control you. I got married at 18. My wife and I have a great life. I was lucky I found her but no one has to let the bad childhood dictate your path in life.

I just cry when I see this. Those children must have had some hard times to get the way they are and do the things they do. I had a life like theirs only I was saved by a police man and nuns who raised me from the age of 9 to 16. I worked with children to try to make a difference in their lives on several occasions. 50 years ago the children we had were runaways, thefts, and prostitution. Very few were heavy drug users. I see a big difference from then to now. They commit more serious crimes now. God please save the children.

I was here as a kid pendelton juvenile correctional facility back in 2013 for 2 years it’s not as wild as it was then but it wild seeing the same exact shit the same exact place same shit going on almost 10 years later

Seems like maybe they shouldn't have counselors who view the people they are counseling as if they were from "another planet"

I just wonder what has happened to Jacob now. He would be 32. He is a handsome, kind, funny and intelligent boy who with the right parenting I think could we have been outstanding. Imagine his father trying to kill him at 3. His whole life was just being shuffled from place to place. Loved the nurse too.

That first kid in the lockdown cell has been treated so well! In an adult jail or prison, anyone who even remotely hurts themselves is stripped down and put in a suicide pod with no blanket, bed, or anything to keep warm. Our justice system is so fucking terrible.

I was extremely similar to the kid in the beginning. I did the exact same things as him. Almost looks like I'm watching my younger self in a mirror. I'm doing much better now. It's pretty much only a memory now, and has 0 effect on me. I guess I got lucky the trauma didn't stay with me in my adult hood. Hope he got equally lucky...

I wish I could find some of the guys I was locked up with back in 03 and 04. I’ve ran into a few but I fear a lot of them went to prison or died.

Such things are nearly impossible in Western Europe or in Scandinavia. I am ready shocked. This system is not right and good. Many kids nowadays have problems with our society and agression. They all need psychological treatment. And we großen ups have to ask theirself: What are the reasons for my daughter's or son's problems?

The women responsible for calming down the patient by telling him to calm down and not hurt himself, through a closed door, is anything but protocol. By the looks of their lack of physical well-being I don't think much good can happen. The young man was in crisis and should have been properly attended. Unfortunately he was left to deal with problem alone. My heart breaks for those young children The staff needing somewhere to go did to that young man what everyone in his life has done...left him when he needed them the most. This is unacceptable.. One does not stand outside the door and think that everything will be alright saying "don't hurt yourself. That young man is in dire straights at that facility. By looking at the faculty, with the amount of extremely over weight people protocol seems to be thrown out the door. Having said that, I honestly believe their hearts are in the right place. But remember. the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

He probably never rcvd counseling at the age of 3 after the dad tried to kill him, and it got worst wth his mom and her drug lifestyle. No one provided services or she was just unfit and now he's a troubled teen. No place can handle these kids or young adults

I believe kids will not get in a such horrible life when they have responsible , supportive loving parents. Mostly they are the ones lacking affection of their parents. IMy heart is broken watching this, I have a son who is far from this kid. He is active in sports, jolly even at times he feels sad because I divorced his father. We ramained as affectionate ang supportive parents even we are already divorced .

i never went to juvie but my mom threatened to kill me when i was 16, i grew up in a hostile environment, my mom was quite the yeller, verbal assault, emotional assault, things were also tough at home, my parents fought a lot, and mom initiated the fights, they weren't physical but arguementative.
