I just got accepted into the MLT associates program and I am kind of nervous about entering the field because of the NEGATIVE talk about the lab in the hospital. Its either Nurses clashing with MLTs and so on and I dont have time for the pettiness with them. I am also seeing and hearing about the low pay. Any advice?? I just dont have 2 years to waste on something thats is not even worth the energy

Did you happen to make a decision? I’m debating it right now too . I wasn’t aware there was negative talk about the lab . And everyone says the pay is okay 😢

@kaycinee3605 Hey I decided to hold off. I just had surgery so I have to wait until next year and plus this will give me some time to think what I want to do.

I put it off for other the program for almost 2 yrs and it's one of the dumbest things I ever did cus I ended up in other fields that didn't speak to me. You can do a lot of things with the education you get from MLT programs and go into many types of lab research biology, water treatment, biotech etc . The most is you probably just to have transfer some credits from your mlt program and do an additional class or two but most employers in non-medical fields that require lab work don't even ask for the academics, just experience! So it is ALWAYS worth it ! ❤❤

You are posted in biochemistry , microbiology and hematology sections all on a same shift...? Or are those clips of different days in your job? Just curious.

It was all in the same day! This hospital on Night Shift only has two lab techs. One tech does hematology & blood bank than the other tech does Chemistry & coagulation and we both split microbiology work.

Do you think specializing in one area opens more opportunities or would it limit you since I am assuming for traveling knowing a little about each area makes you a better candidate? And do you think getting the MLS allows one to make more money? I know some MLT after 2 yrs go for it is this something you planing to do by any chance?

I’m not certified yet but I’ve been doing a lot of research on this career for years. Ik that an mls is a higher level than an mlt but alot of the jobs I see are listed as either or in combination with the same pay so from that I don’t think you’d get more or less money or opportunities. I do believe that being certified fully opens up more opportunities tho because with a single cert you’re only limited to that type of job. My future immunology professor told me it was best to do the whole thing. She said she only did micro at first and it was hard for her to find jobs for a while. For security reasons I always feel more comfortable with the best options .

Do you have any tips for working overnight?
@derekathetourist
@derekathetourist Жыл бұрын
To be honest I am a night owl, but one tip that I think is important is setting a stable sleeping routine and sticking to it. Most people find working overnight stressful on the body, and most of the time it is because people struggle with sleeping doing the day.

I just recently got out of the hospital I lost my appendix because it ended up bursting so I went to the emergency room and the doctor did some testing and he came to me and said that I had an Appendicitis so they transferred me via ambulance from Pittsfield to Bangor Maine when I got to Bangor the nurse was that had me she was ready for me. I had all I could do to stand up I was in that much pain and I had to use the bathroom so the nurse helped me get out of bed and she stood behind me then the surgeon came to see and I asked her if they were going to do surgery that same night and she said yes so the other nurses that were going to be with me in the OR they came to get me and moved me to the preop room. Then from there they brought me to the operating room while the surgeon removed my appendix she also removed my shunt tube and put it on the out side of me then they brought me to the PACU and from there they brought me to the PICU I was there for 2 and a half weeks while I was there I spent my birthday in the PICU and the nurses brought me in cake and balloons and decorated my room. I miss the nurses I had and the room I had and the view of the river that I had. Then after 2and a half weeks I was transferred to the adult unit then after 3 or 4 days the night charge nurse that I had for a nurse up in the PICU prior to that she came to me and said I have good news for you I gotta move you back to the PICU that made my night and my week that happened that following Sunday night. I loved it up there it was nice and quiet so I spent the remainder of my time up there on Wednesday of the last week in September 2 of the night shift nurses came in to see me just before they went home they didn't have to but they did anyway. When the nurses came to get me to bring me down to the OR for the final surgery to put my shunt tube back in me my day shift nurse waved to me as I was being brought down for surgery when I came back up she Immediately came right in to see me and she stayed with me until the night shift nurses got there. I was very pleased with the nurses I had and I'm thankful for them they went above and beyond what was expected of them. I've decided to go back to school to become a phlebotomist with the ultimate goal of becoming an RN I want to work in the PICU and the adult ICU. Back when I was in school I wasn't smart enough to take the health Occupation at tri-county and I wasn't smart enough to take the health occupation back when I was job Corps but back then I had no idea all this other stuff was going to happen I didn't think I would ever find myself wanting to be in the healthcare field but this last hospital stay is what moved me. I want to go from phlebotomist to lab tech to CNA to RN and there's more opportunities in the healthcare field. Thank you for this video.

I enjoy working overnight. Mainly because I don't have to deal with upper management, so it's usually more laid back.
