Life on a ship at sea brings people together. Out here, we work hard and play just as hard. See what it’s like to spend your days out at sea: bit.ly/2EekNOg.
Few can say they’ve hit golf balls off the back of a destroyer. But after a few weeks on a Navy ship, you’ll have done much more than that. Sailors have ice cream socials, karaoke nights, poker and basketball tournaments, play video games and even family meals. Our ships range in size from “floating cities,” like aircraft carriers which transport thousands of Sailors, to destroyers, which may carry just 300. Whether you’re working in the kitchen, the engine room, the flight deck or at the helm, it takes everyone to execute a successful mission.

Running on a treadmill in the helo hanger as the shipped rocked was challenging since it was position facing the port side. Uphill, downhill, uphill every few second. The ones in the weight room faced forward, so just staying in the middle of the treadmill was a challenge. I miss being on a cruiser... had a blast!

Found that even a month long underway running on the treadmill daily drastically increased my overall mile time when we pulled back into port, that or it was the amount of ladder wells I ran up and down. The rocking of the ship made it exciting to workout on.

Hi there, thank you for reaching out. An Enlisted Sailor in the Navy might be deployed all across the world and have a variety of work environments including ships, submarines, aircraft carriers or on shore. It truly depends on your job or "rate" and the need for your specific skill set in a certain place.

I've been mulling over the idea of being an officer in a military branch for a few years now, off and on. Someone who was in the Navy recommended it to me, though I didn't think life on a ship would be fun, nor am I a big fan of swimming... but lately I've come around and found this video, which seems to debunk my misperception of "getting no sunlight, trapped indoors on a ship". The Navy seems to have positions in civil engineering and certainly many with GIS and geographics... I can speak Spanish and Portuguese but I'm rusty. The US Navy really looks like an INCREDIBLE place to be, see the world, do something honorable and meaningful. I'm really struggling post-college in a career path; all jobs just sound annoying and sucky to me. If someone's going to boss me around, I want them to own it and have honor, like a superior officer would in the military. I want to be part of a workplace that is a lifestyle and sees the human dignity in those around them. I may just reach out to a Navy recruiter soon, I just don't want to do so and then shy away and have them give up on me. I just really want to be part of a culture that respects me, my skills, and my dignity.

I was an EW from 1985 - 1989. When I was at the end of my A school, they posted the list of orders corresponding to the number of people in my class. We got to choose from among the selection based on class ranking. I was first so chose the battleship USS Missouri. I'm not sure if other schools did it the same way or if that's how it's done now though.

When I was in I was with helicopter squadrons we would work 12 on 12 off and we never had much time to do anything else especially your 12 on ended up being more like a 16 hour shift we would show up 2 hours early for our shift and in the morning couldn’t leave till the helicopters where launched and day shift had breakfast so basically I would miss super and breakfast and the only meal we would eat was mid rats. But if I could do it again at my age I’d do it in a heartbeat we would leave 28 individuals and come back to the squadron a family and where closer than close. Even today we are still close and I’ve been out almost 23 years.

Whether or not it's fun it's totally up to you, your attitude, your command, and your location. A command can suck and bring you down hard! You might think Florida is for you and then find out it's not! You might get stuck in Norfolk Virginia and end up loving it! But the common denominator and those scenarios is your attitude, what can you do to make it better? 😎👍
