The Berghof, Hitlers private mansion nestled high in the mountains of the Obersalzberg was not just his vacation home but one of the most important centres of government in the Third Reich.
From this mountain chalet Hitler plotted the annexation of Austria, the invasion of Poland and frequently met with his Generals and Military staff during WW2 as well as with Heinreich Himmler and Reinhard Heydrich of the SS.
Apart from the Wolf's Lair, Hitlers HQ on the Eastern Front, it was the Berghof where Hitler spent more time than anywhere else while serving as Fuhrer of the Third Reich.
This video details how Adolf Hitler discovered the Berghof, originally called Haus Wachenfeld, and how he managed to purchase it with his own money, later renovating it to become an alpine headquarters and home away from home in his native Munich.
What happened at the Berghof? What did it look like inside? Who was invited to visit, who were regular guests, and what was the atmosphere like?
