Life before Brisbane's Gateway Bridge

G'day, its Pete.

In this episode I'm travelling the route south out of Brisbane you would have taken before the opening of the Gateway Motorway.
I grew up in a time where a kid could go to work with his dad. He was a truckie, this meant I was able to learn the layout of Brisbane from an early age.
This route is how I remember travelling from the city, out to our home at Springwood.

Being a southerner for over 60 years, I’ve travelled that route many times. Thanks for the memory Pete.

G'day Pete - Thanks for the memories, I lived in Brisbane from 2002 - 2007 and worked on a couple of high rises in the city. Spent a bit of time around Stones Corner too - Happy Days and Great Memories. G'day from Ireland!!!

Share memories ya say! From start to finish mate. Most of mine would be from the late 80's around that area. Ivory street tunnel...Used to drop my HQ back to 2nd every time I went through. Couldn't help myself. Getting the lunches from the little take away on the corner of Logan rd and Deshon st. The bridge at Buranda that I saw plenty of trucks stuck under in the day. The old tattoo shop at the roundabout at Stones Corner. Wholesale car joint next to Norman ck. Your whole trip was the exact route I used to take back to Coorparoo when I worked doing brake and clutch repair jobs on the nth. side. Subbed.

Born 76, grew up in The Gap so remember some of old Brisbane. Have lived last 10 years in Adelaide and sadly I don't miss Brisbane traffic at all haha

Interesting. I bought a motorcycle from a shop on the northern dead-end section of Logan Road. I remember when the Riverside Expressway and Captain Cook Bridge opened, you had to exit onto Logan Road via Vulture Street (from memory). The SE freeway opened in stages, with links back to Logan Road a little further south each time. Thank you. 🙂

Thanks for the memories Pete. As a young person from across the ditch I arrived in 1974 just after the floods. We had a flat in Ferry St just opposite ACE driving school and worked at Evans Deakin Shipyards. All gone now and replaced by high rise buildings. Bought my first car from Stones Corner , a 1974 Holden HQ Panelvan with a 308 V8. Being keen young rugby players we used to run over to the Carlton United Breweries on the north side of the Story Bridge and back every morning.Cheers Mate

The access to Logan Road at the fiveways was closed in 1973 to coincide with the opening of the freeway between the CBD and Greenslopes. The freeway plan from the 1960s would have seen each of the city's major urban arterials (Logan Rd, Moggill Rd, Gympie Rd, Sandgate Rd etc) given a parallel freeway, with the older arterial road then reconfigured to serve primarily local access. Of course the freeway system ran out of money and ran short of public support very early on, so not too many actual freeways were built, and even where they were, very little was done to redevelop the old arterial roads beyond this first stretch of Logan Road between the fiveways and Cornwall Street. (And even then, the stretch through Stone's Corner wasn't completed till the late 90s).

Awesome video mate. Drove this exact route for over 42 years working as a news photographer. Couldn't even estimate how many times. Could almost drive it blindfolded.

just randomly came up on my feed, this is similar to my route i take home but i usually go down wellington road onto ipswich road to cut through to stones corner. However due to the big pile of shit with cross river they've blocked all southbound traffic on okeefe street which now means cornwall street is an absolute shit show and cleveland street in stones corner is basically used as a main road now
