The devil's claw plant (Proboscidea parviflora) is best known by its iconic seed pods with symmetrical hooks. These plants are native to the southwestern US where they grow along washes and roads. These specimens were grown in my yard and in the area around my house in Tucson, Arizona.

That was super interesting. I found some seed pods with seeds at work a few weeks a ago. I thought about bring them home and planting them but then I decided to just spread them everywhere around where I found them. I'm hoping next year we another big monsoon and the place gets full of devils claws.

Thanks! It would be awesome if good monsoons became the norm. Good on you for spreading those seeds!

I planted some in my backyard from a friend's garden in 2008 and one of them came up this past may! It has given me great pleasure to raise and nurture this amazing plant! All together It made about 40 seed pods, and just when I thought it was dying, it popped out about 20 new flowers. Waiting and watching to see what happens now....

@@LoFiOutdoors well it came up next to a pecan tree stump exactly where I planted some seeds years ago...well after the last flowers came out, all of the leaves are wilting and it's dying now 😠 I know it's just a plant, but I sort of feel like I had a pet that just died. (Lol) anyway, I have hundreds of seeds to start up next year. Thanks for posting the video, it was awesome to see the life cycle of this rare plant (rare inTexas anyway)

That's very interesting. Thanks for sharing! I had no idea devil's claw were domesticated or that some had white seeds. What is your tribe? Are you Tohono O'odham?

@@michaelhutchinson5506 I appreciate your insight! I'm going to try to grow some of the domestic plants as soon as I find someone with seeds. Do you use them for food, making things, or both?
