The Jurassic Coast of Britain offers an astonishing insight into life on Earth around 200 million years ago. This remarkable stretch of coastline preserves all sorts of prehistoric marine animals, recording the life and death of these vanished creatures at this extraordinary point in time, when great sea reptiles ruled the waves, dinosaurs dominated the land and pterosaurs commanded the skies.

When I was kid, my grandmother told me about the coasts where marine fossils were found. That piqued my interest in paleontology. As soon as the snow began to fall in your video (at 27:16) snow started falling where I am in the States. I love coincidences. Ha! I would love to join you folks for a fossil hunting outing. I found this video to be most instructive. Many thanks, Ben G. Thomas and company.

For what it's worth, if you need to tight up the head of a hammer (rake, pitch fork, etc. )..... hold the handle with the head up in the air, then you strike the butt of the handle on a hard surface with a couple firm blows. The inertia of the head will drive it firmly onto the handle. BTW get the man a decent hammer with a wooden handle 🙂

Reminds me of a school field trip long ago, when we were walking the beach along a mudstone stretch, called Osmington Mills, I think. It was a windy day, early in the year like in this piece, and we could hear frequently distinct tinging sounds as belemnites were released from the silt/mudstones and rolled down the cliffs onto the beach. I probably still have a box of them somewhere. If you had gone further west to cliffs around Southerndown in Wales, the wave cut layers of limestone go a long way out from the cliffs, and many of the rock pools are actually the ammonites. As a child visiting in summer with my parents, I upset some of the holiday sunbathers with my vain attempts to get too big fossils out with too small hammer and chisel, but I think their radios were much worse! :)
@spamletspamley672
@spamletspamley672 Жыл бұрын
Incidentally, even if you cannot get to the Jurassic Coast, you will find that the river gravel used on driveways all over the UK is made of quite a high content of semi polished pieces of belemnite guards and gryphaea shell. You can find fossils almost anywhere if you keep your eyes open. There are fabulous polished rugose coral sections to be seen in the sarcophagi inside St Albans Cathedral for example: polished from hundreds of years of people trailing fingers over the stones as they pass by. That's a kind of erosion they don't usually teach in college! :)

Soak the whole hammer with the handle on in a few inches of linseed oil for a week or two. A bag uses much less than a container. There's wedges and whatnot, but ones you make from hardwood will be better than what is sold if you want to go that route.
