Erwin Rommel, one of five children of an artillery lieutenant, was born on 15 November 1891 in Württemberg, then part of the German Empire. In 1910, at the age of 18, Rommel joined the German army and by the outbreak of the First World War, which began on 28 July 1914, he held a position of an infantry officer.
Rommel fought primarily in France and Italy. He successfully employed the tactics of penetrating enemy lines with heavy covering fire coupled with rapid advances, as well as moving forward rapidly to a flanking position to arrive at the rear of hostile positions, to achieve tactical surprise.
After striking successes at the Battle of Caporetto and in the capture of the Italian town of Longorone, Rommel was promoted to the rank of captain in January 1918.
On 11 November of the same year, the First World War ended.

Rommel was much like Canaris and the other German officers, field marshals and Generals involved with the growing German resistance weren’t loyal towards Nazism but instead to Germany and Hitler deemed it a threat.

My father served in the British Army's campaign all the way from Abyssinia to Tunisia, it left him with a lifelong dislike of camels, a love for astronomy and the ability to swear in Arabic. Desert rats might understand this.

During the North Africa campaign, Rommel had a personal driver named Hellmut von Leipzig (1921 - 2016), an officer and a leutnant in the Brandenburgers who served as his driver/chauffeur while serving in the Afrika Korps as a volunteer.

Numerous POWs from Rommel's Afrika Corps were held at Ft. Dix, NJ, where my father did his basic training in 1944. He said they were very tough and extremely loyal to Herr General Rommel.

The Einsatzgruppen operated in North Africa , when Rommel was " running the show" , THAT shocked me ( I had always thought of him as a " reluctant " Nazi until I learned that )

My opinion of Rommel always has been that he was a devoted soldier, an exemplary officer in the service of his country. He was never an ideological Nazi supporter, but of course, as a practical matter, was committed to serving his country under der Furor. He was not alone in seeing the war was already lost, nor devoted to the "final solution", but in the momentum of the time, he was faced with the inner dilemma of becoming a "traitor" to his country, or going against the grain of the evermore fanatical Hitler and the evil regime he had created.

My father served in the English army that defeated Romel. I remember sitting with my dad during the final stage of the 1966 World Cup when he became quite emotional, despite his dementia and cheered on the boys when Hurstzy and Ballzy propelled England to the very top of the world rankings.

For the world’s sake, I’m thankful Hitler and Mussolini were incompetent fools. The Italian army was horrendous, and Hitler acted on his lack of patience. If both were better with battle planning, we may be under Nazi rule today.

Rommel was an aggressive, yet fair commander. I read something that was written about him. It said “as his old opponent on the battlefield I have no complaints against him. Rommel and his soldiers fought against us hard but clean.” I think that kinda says a lot about his character.
