Back in the day my dad would get drunk and just cut car batteries open with an axe and we had lead to make fishing sinkers out of for days. All we needed were those grid plates and the terminal parts. The rest of it we just raked up and probably threw on the burn pile.

Congrats on turning your house into a hazmat toxic waste site. Most of the lead in those batteries is in the form of lead sulfate, the black stuff on those plates. A small amount was lead metal, of which you might have recovered about half. You needed to cover the whole mess of the plates with charcoal to prevent the lead from converting to the lead oxide, that was the stuff you kept scraping from the top of the molten lead. You also needed to convert the lead sulfate in the plates to lead oxide by roasting. When roasting you get lots of sulfur dioxide released which is the stuff making you cough (not shown ) and making the neighbors wonder what the hell you were doing. After the roasting is done you should have converted the PbSO4 to PbO, lead oxide the stuff you were scraping off onto the yard. That should have been heated with charcoal and flux to get lead metal. One last thing, all that wasted dross and stuff from the batteries is still toxic, even if you've forgotten about it.

@@jaxv94 Ummm because they are afraid of lead. Everyone is afraid of lead. I melted down batteries with my dad all the time and handled lead slugs all day with my bare hands. The gov obviously wants everyone to be afraid of it because it has to do with the second amendment.

Pretty cool, thanks for the tips. If you could get some old car batteries, now you're talking. Nice to know just in case you need to scrounge on the future or some lead to make slugs.

i got more lead with only 2 batterys,same size,but i did clean each segment,and only used the shiny ones ,the rusty looking ones are separate and didnt even melt it,as for cleaning the lead i used some flux and trashed the dross

if you try this again, you might consider putting a layer of charcoal dust over the melt. This protects the lead from oxygen and may even reduce some of the lead oxide to metallic lead.
@fatheroffixing5328
@fatheroffixing5328 6 жыл бұрын
thanks for the tip....i will try that next time although i should say that there was a significant amount of charcoal in there considering the furnace runs on it!
@bryannoyce

if the lead was completely covered in CO2 and CO then, mission accomplished. If air was flashing over the melt then charcoal would help. I have a battery around here, somewhere, that I want to melt. I will post the link if I do.

You can cast a lot of lead objects out of a dead battery - if done outside with proper PPE protection. I cast lead sinkers and such out of the lead I recover.

Battery Lead (Pb) is alloyed with 10-15% Sb ( antimony) there so not pure! Also is allot of PbO2 ( dioxide of lead 4+) especially when battery is EoL, it must be reduced on fire with charcoal.... Also Antimony is more poisonous acts like arsenic... Fumes ( oxides 3+ and 5+ especially) and salts...

Father Of Fixing that makes sense yet that also means what was left would have been pretty strong as most of the water was already evaporated even in small amounts if hi concentrate very useful.
@fatheroffixing5328

True, that is why i neutralized the few drops left, but i was to ever need sulfuric acid for future purposes i do have a lot more batteries laying around :)

Dead batteries don't have sulfuric acid in them. The chemical reactions convert it into water and the plates become sulfated.
@kenjett2434
@kenjett2434 4 жыл бұрын
@@thereynolds2725 not entirely true the sulfuric acid is merely a catylist the reaction is the ion exchange between the internal plates. This creates the heat that evaporates the water. Pure sulfuric acid doesn't evaporate till temperatures over 800 Fahrenheit. This is why water has to be added not acid when servicing a battery.

Dam dude, you only ended up with Two lead muffins after all those batteries. What a waste of time and energy taking those type of battery apart. Should've further refined it before you melted it, get as much clean lead to start with. You had a crucible full of just trash

Not really qualified to make judgement but would a minimal surgical mask offer much protection here? Perhaps someone who knows more about this could advise. I would also have thought more in the way of protection for the face and hands would be a good idea.

Since most of the lead is in oxide form, best to take it to a real recycler that will get 99% of the lead out. Melt bullets and weights if you want to play

The majority of the lead in these batteries, the active material, is lead oxide, not metallic lead. The spent acid even if neutralized has a high lead content. You need to address the disposal of your unused residue.Your process is one that you would find in a third or fourth world country.

It's much easier to get lead from car tire weights. If you walk down any main street or road they can be found in the gutter where the street meets the curb/sidewalk. I always find them there and they add up quick

You don't think he did this for the value of the lead, right? If a guy goes fishing for 30 minutes you don't say "Wow, you got a lot of time on your hands? 30 minutes for a small fish minus the cost of your tackle and time?" That's what an asshole would do.
