Life in a Mediaeval City, Illustrated by York in the XVth Century
by Edwin Benson
A short and gentle overview of mediaeval life in a large city. It lightly covers the class structure of society, local government, guilds, pageantry and punishment. The author has an easy, rhythmic style which leaves the reader wanting to find out more.(Summary by Peter Yearsley)

One of the very best LibriVox narrations out there. Perfect French, too.

I reported a comment on here saying that this wasnt "a reading of substance" which totally confused my perception of this reading from the get go. I wish that person would get their ears some ear aides because they obviously cant tell a good thing from a bad and then be grateful for it. Instead they have to badmouth good things and ruin it for people who can appreciate it

Then get in front of a microphone and do it yourself, the Libivox readers are all volunteers, (many of them are not English nor is English always their first language,) and personally as long as these readings are intelligible which they almost always are then I'm grateful to anyone who gives there time to benefit the rest of us in this manner. If your sensing certain healthy contempt here for you criticism then you'd be absolutely right.

I've been saying on other recordings that a book about anything English, should be read by an Englishman. This should be non negotiable.

You can tell the narrator doesn't know York. "Boot-ham-Bar" is pronounced "Boo-tham-Bar".. The L is silent in "Peasholme Green"

Good to know. Most listeners are probably Americans and we can't hear the difference. We just want all our audiobooks to be read by BBC-sounding voices. Or Jeremy Irons. That posh, slightly dour and gravely voice is how all Brits should sound. I mean, America loves Jeremy Irons so much that he was our villain in the Lion King, our Borgia pope and we gave him the Best Actor for Claus Von Bulow

This was actually quite dull and predictable and what is said of York could probably and just as accurately be said equally of almost any other medieval town or city of the same period; if you skip this you won't be missing much.
