From the Film Australia Collection. Made by the Commonwealth Film Unit 1966. Directed by Peter Young and John Edwards. A picture of life in the Tasmanian town of Launceston in the mid 1960s.
The Life In Australia series portrays Australian cities and rural centres as happy, lively places where good homes, abundant jobs, schools, hospitals and amenities provide the foundation for a relaxed lifestyle where sport, shopping, religion and even art combine to create a homogenous and prosperous society. Sad to see the loss of industry.The neon signs look great! I wonder why they got rid of them. Made Launceston look alive. Simpler times, but it was also a time when everyone had employment. Sometimes progress is not all it's cracked up to be.

I was one of the girls going into the Launceston Technical College. Saddens me to see how much industry has been lost over the years.

People still live real lives in Launceston, and still have real jobs. It's just that lives and jobs are different nowadays

Thankyou so much. I enjoyed it. It is wonderful to see . We had more dignity and respect and presented ourselves by dressing attractively to go into the City or out of an Evening. I miss it.

This could easily have been “Living in Canada”, where I live. Life was like this all over the world. We gained in technology, but we lose socially. I don’t like what we have become, but it’s called ‘progress’.

I work in a senior home in Vancouver, Canada, and one of the residents there was originally from launceston. She moved to Canada in 1965, travelled the world in a VW Beetle, was a nurse all over the world, never married, and her name was Pat (Patricia) Wolf. She past away in 2020. People like her were amazing! Seen so much, and been everywhere in their life, but end up alone and lonely. Life is like that.

I played on that train at 16:00 many times as a kid in the 80's. It's fascinating to see what life was like 20 years before that.

Growing up in the 50’s and 60’s were great, full employment, everyone seemed happy and content. I lived near Wellington NZ but this seems typical of a lot of countries. This film brings back good memories.

Looks very English. Obviously we were still being influenced more by the British than the Americans. Pitty that changed. Very interesting and enjoyable footage. Thank you.

The hospital featured at 8:48 is the old LGH (now Hotel Charles), looking south up the driveway to the main entrance. A third year nurse is shown arranging flowers on the children's ward. At 9:14 you can just see the nurse's home up on the hill through the trees on the left.

Launceston is a lovely place. I wish they had shown some of the natural beauty spots. (like Cataract Gorge and the Tamar river). I guess they were trying to show the rest of the world that Australia could compete in terms of sophisticated living and entertainment. These were promotional movies to encourage immigration from England. Beautifully filmed and the colors were rich and saturated. Top quality - especially when you consider it was done 53 years ago.

It was a very difficult decision back then for a migrant where to settle, as Australia, USA, Canada, South Africa were all of the same cloth. Politics has drifted us a little apart over the decades, but life was like this everywhere.

Your comment on these promotional movies is absolutely correct!... they were shown in picture theatres in UK to attract immigration from England. The “ White Australia Policy” was still strictly enforced up until 1972.

14:48 - my dad riding third back in the middle, grey top with red sleeves and red band across the front - bit of camera watching at 14:53, nearly takes out the guy in the light blue!! First time I saw him ride was watching this, riding was a huge part of his life. He died when I was 2, so seeing this is very special. Bought three copies of the DVD, one for me, one for Mum and one for my brother. Think Mum might still have that style leather helmet lying around the house.

I quite liked this :) As a 20 y.o. launceston born a bred male, i found it quite interesting how some things are the same and some are quite different :) I must acquire a trench coat, hat and briefcase :p

The car race was the Longford Circuit. 13:05 Spencer Martin no.7 (Australian Racer). 13:40 looks like the hard right turn pass the Langford Hotel (I think its the Blenheim Inn Hotel now). 13:58 looks like the wooden kings bridge or the Long Bridge.

OMG, the St Ailbe's dance - the memories of that place still linger, haha. One of my friends used to play trumpet in the old time band, he was a teenager, the rest were seniors. They could never figure out how he got so pissed when the place was dry. He smuggled some grog in his trumpet case - he reckoned it was the only way he could survive the night, haha. That was a bit later than this video, circa 1971.

17:43 Brisbane St at night, looking east. You can see the majestic theater (yellow sign, cut off, top of frame) and the "Hoyts" sign outside the princess theater (near center frame).

A wonderful place to live out one's life in peace and tranquility(even now).In comparison, the scenery/quality-of-life, makes Sydney, where I live, look like a toilet, and oh so 3rd world!

We lived in Melbourne but had a holiday house at Grindelwald 15k from Launceston, dad said he actually travelled on a DC6 probably Qantas which was on a regular run to Tassie in 60s not many bothered with Tassie until real estate price rose in the mainland, the Cadbury factory & Pattons wool gave many employment.

At 3.02 a very young and lovely Ellen Mitchell from Prospect High School in 1965 where it spent it's first year at the old Wellington Square buildings that were part of Launceston High School before moving to Prospect

interesting to note that there aren't any fat people in this video... everyone was active... men and women kept themselves trim...not yet addicted to sugar and sitting around on their backsides watching tv and staring for hours at their mobile phones... (".)

I'm sick of seeing fat people. People today, no longer have any self pride. I like living in a world of beautiful bodies. I'm 52 and am more athletic and have a better physic than men in their 20's do.

The jobs may have been monotonous but they were jobs. If you finished your education at the age of 15 and you weren't that smart, at least you knew you would get a job or a trade unlike today

@@hamishfullerton7309 Those ladies in those jobs could not comfortably buy a house, they had to marry a man first and they could then buy a house based only on his income and how much they had saved in the previous 3 years. No savings history, no bank loan; when they did qualify for a loan, it was 9%, and then they raised the family on one income. Those kids grew up into today's young ones who wonder why houses are so expensive, one of the reasons is every man and woman wants a house for themselves, thereby doubling demand in one fell swoop. There are many other factors too, I realise that.

No, I reckon it was St Ailbe's Margaret St. There was a Saturday night dance there, and they had a "rock band" and an old time swing/jazz band combo (who sounded much better than that rock tragedy). One of my mates played in that band circa 1971, a bit later than this film. That was the place to go to find "nice" girls and boys, as well as all ages through to seniors. It was a heavily monitored dry zone as well. There all sorts of dances, including barn dances, which were horrendous because by the time the very cute girl you really wanted to meet was due to reach you the music stopped and you suffered all the clingy ones you weren't interested in, haha. Sounds a bit male, but I can assure you the reverse sentiment was held by the girls.

I"ve never laughed so much at at a short film in my life , even more so when realised the piece was was never intended as a comedy , however Geelong is a comedy , all ways has been and always will be so ....
