I spent 8 years in Australia and loved it. That said, while we generally pay more taxes in Europe, combining work and parenting is much easier in here as you get either free or heavily subsidized childcare. I had plenty of friends in the Australian middle class who could only put their kids under 6 in childcare part-time and/or a few days a week. So one of the parents usually ended up not working full time, lowering their wage and professional growth. You'll find more stay home mums there than here (nothing wrong with that, as long as you're not feeling forced to). Of course, past a certain salary threshold that problem goes away.

After visiting the UK last year I found the things I didn't like were; Parking was expensive, Using toilets costs money, VAT Tax, Fuel prices expensive, New car prices expensive, Wages low, Accommodation expensive, McDonalds crowded. (Loved the banana shakes though!) What I liked was, Food was cheaper by 20%, Public transport was amazing, Flights to Ireland/Europe short, affordable and convenient. In Australia you have hot days in summer, drop bears landing on your head the second you get off the plane, snakes everywhere just waiting to swallow you whole, and spiders as big as dinner plates landing on you the moment you go for a walk. Don't get me started on the 9ft boxing kangaroos that are usually seen in boxing gloves however if you can fight you should be OK.

Fruit and veg is seasonal and the prices are inflated recently due to world events. Capsicums were usually around $2.99 per kilo pre-pack bag and tomatoes were usually also $2.99-$3.99 in season...sometimes cheaper. Mushrooms used to lower to around $6.00 per kg too and I personally bought some last shopping for $5.98kg. The key is don't always shop at the big supermarkets (Coles and Woolworths) for fresh produce and meats. They are okay for alot of the packaged foods but going to the smaller chains can be a big saver.

@@LeeandLoz Sometimes it's not even about shopping local, just not always going to Coles and Woolworths. Coles and Woolworths tomatoes and capsicum are priced at phenomenally high prices and I just won't buy them. I live in South Australia so I hit up Romeo's Foodland or a dedicated fruit and veg store where I've been paying $4.98 kg for tomatoes and $2.98 kg for red capsicum...green capsicum for some reason is $3.98 even though they are the same thing. I haven't bought beef from Coles or Woolworths for over a decade as it is priced too high consistently and I haven't bought sliced hams and other deli meats there for the same reason.

Talking about beer glass sizes, the first time I went to Broken Hill (where Mad Max was filmed) which is the start of the outback in western New South Wales, I noticed everyone drinking beer were using middy glasses. This is a size smaller than schooner glasses. My friend who who lived there explained that they drink from smaller glasses because it is so hot, your beer doesn’t get warm as quick as it would in a bigger glass.

Late to the comments., and from Melbourne in the state of Victoria. Travel in Melbourne is easy. We have the most extensive tram system in the world. The train system is good and very cheap due to a recent new price system. eg. We travelled from Wodonga , on the border with New South Wales, to Melbourne as retired pensioners for a little less than four dollars one-way for a four hour trip of hundreds of kilometres .Bus services are OK. The food may have been expensive due to the expansive flooding Australia has suffered. Crops (and towns) were washed badly affected.. Only today was I able to buy my first carton of soy-based ice-cream in a long time because the floods down the Eastern states destroyed the crops. Also we try to shop for in-season fruit and vegetables. Your emphasis on outdoor activity was mainly centred on the beaches. We also have MANY excellent, beautiful and interesting huge forests and big parks with associated activities including those on rivers and lakes.

Thanks interesting. As someone who has lived and worked in both countries a few of my impressions you may not agree with. At least in the cities we Australians would possibly be described as more "woke" than UK and certainly US. Heard a US culture warrior go off about Qantas and Virgin paying respects to the traditional owners of the land when they were landing - hate to think if he knew that "welcomes to country" are universal at many meetings. Again in the public sector as a Senior Manager I earnt about 2.5 times what my EA did - but in the UK it was 5 times. Not in private sector but in Australian public sector less huge variations. Maybe more egalitarian - in Australia everyone called me by my First Name - in UK was shocked to be called "Sir" or "Mr" by staff like security guards and cleaners. Told them not to - but they found it odd/difficult. Again you may not agree but I think our politics is so much more "grown-up" than UK and US even though it can be brutal - we have a few, but generally, less nutters. Think compulsory and preferential voting helps, (My wife has just got a letter saying she did not vote in the State Election and will be fined - she did and has to send a stat dec in to avoid it). I have both passports but even though it cost 300% more I would give up my UK one before my Australian. To me the only disadvantage of living here, as you recognise, is that we are a long way from anywhere - but you get used to 12-21 hour flights.
@rafae5902
@rafae5902 11 ай бұрын
More grown-up? Yeah, I don't know about that. Your country heavily relies in what it can extracts from its natural resources and is using it to keep your minimum wages artificially inflated and at the same time is killing innovation and aussies drive for natural high paying jobs. It will works as long as you can keep relying in your natural resources. I think Australia's future will be similar to Japan. You are in your boom phase and eventually will fall from grace. What I mean by that is that your growth with your high minimum wages and stuff isn't sustainable long term. That said, it's not something to worry in our lifetimes, probably.
@RJS4287
@RJS4287 11 ай бұрын
@@rafae5902 True we are a natural resources economy - though in terms of tertiary products and services our educational exports are amongst the largest in the world. Health is also big. This resources reliance and a small population means that efforts to increase manufacturing have not been that successful - there is no domestic car production now in Australia despite years of government investment since WW2. The Government is hoping buying and part building nuclear powered submarines might be a stimulant but personally I doubt it. By "grown-up" I suppose I mean the culture wars are less virulent here. And we do do not have the hard core Brexiteers idea of putting the "great" back into Great Britain. We know our place as a middle ranked but affluent nation unlike some who send aircraft carriers half way around the world but have to borrow the planes on them from the USA even though S Korea and Japan have larger air forces and Singapore more up to date ones. We let Singapore with its highly modern air force but no space for training base some of its aircraft here.

We also do not have to pay a TV tax! Yes, it can be expensive to travel, but Asia is close by and is very cheap for us Aussies. I honestly enjoy travelling Asia far more than Europe. In Europe, you either get a pompous French person that doesn't like the fact that you do not speak their language or having to keep guard of your phone so it doesn't get stolen, or a combo of both. In Asia, I get treated like royalty and people are so polite and respectful.

The best of aus is that there is no class system and the worst weather is easily better than the best in UK.. the worst is that they have some of the most expensive living in the world, in the middle of knowhere. Aussies have also dropped there culture with the new generations who live on American videos from there phones. The best of the UK is they have retained there culture, there pubs are brilliant and they have a real value on being interesting and funny. The worse is that no one has a house, they all live in terraces, you can't talk politics or religion as they close up, dreadful class focus. Really I would say it comes down to whether you like shit weather or not....

Australia and the UK is not much difference the politics, racism and divisions are the same in both the UK and Australia most Europeans in Australia are originally from the UK and Ireland. Many left the UK in droves many are ten pound pommes.

I disagree with Australia being more outdoors. We lived there for 17 years in Queensland. The weather is so hot that indoors was preferable. We are more outdoors in the UK.

I’m from NZ, been living in the UK just over one year. It’s one of the most miserable places I’ve ever lived. I lived in Australia for about 5 years in the past and to me, Australia is 100x better than the UK in every way except proximity to Europe

Yep, you get charged for an Ambulance even if you didn't call them and never wanted their service. They get your name, send you a bill for over $1,100.00 and then won't listen to reason when you tell them what happened. They're about as bad as tow truck drivers. I'm sure if you actually need them it's worth the money, but like any criminal organisation, they're always getting paid, no matter what.

No no no. If you work in healthcare or education, there are hardly any full time, permanent jobs. It's contact, term time and at half the pay. Eg I left England as a highly qualified Allied health professional on $42k PS 14 years ago, the only jobs available were part time (3 days a week), contact at the equivalent of $27k pro rata. Healthcare is better. Culture is awful, most people are poor and have to have second jobs as self employed.

House prices in Australia are through the roof is 550k for a one or two bedroom unit with a courtyard equiv of 270k pounds. That's if you want to live anywhere near the coast that isn't 5 miles from the sun. Petrol prices and utilities generally cheaper in Aus. If you are a healthcare professional there is hardly any career progression. Tradies and hairdressers get paid more.
