In this video compilation we look back at teens in locked up in juvenile detention and juvenile prison, as well as detention officers and prison guards as they all spend their days behind razor wire fences. Teens talk openly about their experiences in lockup, and try to tell others their age it's no place to be. From the Segregation unit inside juvenile prison, to the cell pods in juvenile detention, we hear from teenagers as they experience day after day behind bars. We also follow prison guards as they shut off water to a teenager's cell after the teen kept flooding his cell with toilet water. We then sit down and talk to teens in detention as they talk about who their role models are, and what they think could help keep them from ending up back in the criminal justice system once they get out.
2023 updates on the kids featured are listed at the end of this video.

“Big L” is the perfect example for the right man for the job. He knows and understands what those kids go through in the home. His demeanor and how he approaches them let’s them develop trust and they can actually start listening to his advice knowing he actually cares about them and their wellbeing.

Rodrick is 17 but looks 30. Kenneth is a criminal with a criminal mind yet he says he has to teach his younger siblings, nieces and nephews right from wrong because there is no one else to do it, yet in his case it really is the blind leading the blind. He doesn’t know right from wrong either. That’s sad.

The one kid said he doesn’t really care about the councilors because they were only there to make the facility look good while you all were filming. I think that is proven in the fact the kids go from being in and out of the juvenile system to in and out of the adult system. It is heartbreaking.

Would rather find something that would help these kids instead of keeping them locked up with the same type of people they hangout on the outside we must change the way we lock people up

Would like the show to elaborate on the line “some of them like this life” referring to kids who return many times. What’s that about…why cant they control their behavior, knowing what they’re returning to, what they’re missing in life and the point where they know they’ll be going to an adult prison -next time-. Is it worth the risk…and what does that info mean to them?
@stst77

Maybe for some of them they have a name and status inside but outside they are nothing. Maybe the closest some of them have to a father figure is their detention officer and that’s better than nothing. Maybe the closest some of them have felt cared for comes from a counselor but on the outside all they get is abuse, verbal abuse and neglect from their moms so for some maybe inside is warmer than outside as bad as that sounds.

Being an inmate and prisoner is way easier than having you're rights & being in society I would admit.

No the hell it isnt. Well maybe in some states for lazy people, people who are mentally/emotionally immature & fine with some other inmate or guards trying to tell them what to do 24/7. People ok with being locked up with folks of the same sex 24/7. But from my personal experience & countless others, Hell naw it isnt easier in any aspect

When these kids commit the Crime, they never thought of the Consequences after. Once in jail with no Freedom or their Family & Friends, they realised the Reality of being LOCKED UP FOR YEARS hit them Home.

48:00 maybe those counselers arent supposed to be there those days but let y'all think that. Trying to show all y'all youngins 1st hand the consequence of not doing what you're supposed to do. Same way while y'all youngins are out doing things you can get locked up for you're ignoring what y'all are supposed to be doing

I hadn't been in Maple Lane juvenile prison for two weeks when I was playing chess with a big black kid and took his queen. He got so mad he beat up a guard. I really believe they took him to the mountains and killed him. I didn't play chess again for twenty years and still don't enjoy it. F Seattle

That should be traced back to the home. By the time they get to this point what do you do? These kids have proven to be violent so as inhumane as all this looks, there’s a reason they are doing it. It’s sad and i don’t have an answer for what to do with kids that can’t be trusted around other human beings including the guards.

Whos mercy & compassion? The inmates for those that had victims? Likely cant even spell either & think they're the victims. They have too much self pity for any type of self awareness. Or staff? who dont have to have either. They just have to do their job, nothing more & nothing less

Something doesn’t set right with me with the officer say the boy got 10 years for murder but it was an accident. To me an accident is you go to get in your car and no one is around your car, but while you are fastening your seat belt and adjusting yourself your 2 year old goes and sits behind the car and you don’t see her and back up and kill your child. That’s an accident that i would never put anyone in prison for. However, going into someone’s house to steal, they wake up and you panic by knocking them in the head just so you can get out but they die isn’t an accident. It isn’t premeditated murder but you still killed someone with deliberate violence. I don’t know what the boy did that he called an accident but if the boy took a life carelessly he shouldn’t be being told it was an accident. He needs to know why his actions led to him being in prison. I also don’t like the boy saying “i made a mistake “ to come back to prison. A mistake is I used salt instead of sugar when baking a cake. A mistake is not “I broke into your house and stole your money”. That’s not a mistake. That’s a crime! These kids should not be taught to excuse their crimes as mistakes. They need to fully own up to “ i am a thief “, “ i am a murderer “, “ i am a vandal “ or whatever crime they committed.
