TEDx Talks

Күн бұрын

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Since the introduction of virtual reality (VR), technologists have struggled to design products and applications that draw users into digital worlds that are comparable to real-life experiences. As we progress towards the ability to tell stories by offering wholly immersive experiences for the user, we start to imagine what an entire industry devoted to the creation of virtual reality may look like in the near future. In this TEDxTalk, Ana Serrano extracts lessons learned from the explosion of the Internet over the past twenty years, and explains how these will help guide us in the creation of the virtual reality industry for the next twenty years. What can we learn from the way advertising and the public commons have changed online over time? How will this affect the VR world for the future? What risks does it present to the consumer? And how can we rectify it going forward? These are just a few of the thought-provoking questions she tackles during this talk.
Ana Serrano is the Chief Digital Officer of the Canadian Film Centre (CFC), and founder of CFC Media Lab, the world-renowned interactive storytelling institute created in 1997. As educator, producer, and intrapreneur, Serrano has received numerous awards from the digital media, film, and theatre industries in Canada and the U.S. She’s an adjunct professor at OCAD, an Executive Member of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, and frequently speaks at media and film festivals around the world about the digital entertainment industry.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Her thesis here is definitely extracted from Jaron Lanier's latest book "Who Owns The Future", and she does bring up some very good points.

Wow! You are absolutely amazing. So glad to see that not only are there people trying to design a positive virtual world, but also there are fellow Torontonians doing the same! I actually have the opportunity to work with Occupied which was cool to hear you talk about them. But seriously. Everything you're saying is true. We can't make the same mistakes that were made before with adverts and manipulation. The fact that Facebook bought Oculus IS a little startling and might want to be something to look further into.

Wow that was a really great topic to discuss because virtual reality is becoming more of the big elephant within the room in some states, country, town, home, and stores. Because this is a really big talk lately and alot of people where i am from is like really neutral on this discussion and so people is like no S.A.O. is becoming real we're going to be trapt in the v.r. world in a fight for our lives. not my thoughts just the people around me but to me, personally i believe that this will be a huge huge huge step into the next gen period...

There has been MANY things based off of a show/movie/series that dealt with Virtual Reality. It wasn't 100% based off of SAO you know?

Amazing talk! Just wanted to add that to my knowledge lag problem was not tackled by Palmer Lucky. It was by John Carmack.

It was a whole bunch of people... The VR team at Valve in particular had a lot to do with it (Michael Abrash was hired by Oculus for this reason).

nightsoldier1112 Those are more recent additions to team and technology of Rift. At beginning it was collaboration of Palmer and Carmack. Carmack presented it at one of game shows while we still was part of Zenimax family as proof of concept. Before Carmack got involvement lag and distortion on Rift where pretty terrible while Palmer had other things figured out. Valve guys were crucial to push Rift prototypes to the state where it is now (low persistence, positional head tracking) but not part of Rift development during 2012 to my knowledge (at least not directly). I am here painting picture with a broad strokes, at the end it was team effort from all people involved. My point was that Palmer, while being awesome guy and one of key people, didn't solve problem of lag.

Fantastic talk, well done how you led us to your logical point. Everything possible will be monitored & evaluated. As an original backer & fan of the Rift, I am also aware of FB wanting to track what we do in VR. Right now they are trying to create compelling content & get eyeballs initially. Later in future versions, they will be able to read eye tracking, vocal content, & other bodily functions leading to analyzing & knowing your inclinations almost before you are aware of them. I expect there will be some push back as people become aware, but over time bit by bit it will become normalized & accepted. :(

Ana, Great talk. I believe we need an internet where nothing is free and everything costs money--nanocents for every email, post, upload, comment, audio streamed, or video downloaded, or newspaper or blog post that we read. For about $2 per person per month we could get rid of all web advertising, and have that money go more to creators and less to search engines and social media data vacuum companies. Charging would have the benefit of reducing spam, getting rid of linkbait listicles, and loads of other socially useless activity that is incentivized by a pay-per-click economy.

Phil!!! Lovely to hear from you. Actually that's exactly what we were talking about at a Future of Film Workshop we ran yesterday with Ted Hope. If you have an info-graphic of how that might work technically I'd love to see it. Let's connect.

Ana Serrano Wish I did. You can write to me philhood at gmail. I'll see what I can find. I have notes for an article on this. The basic idea is all content has metadata with some sort of commons copyright that says "this picture is worth the standard 1/1000th of a cent." Then, anyone in the world could quote your article or copy your photo--but the money would return to the copyright owner, similar to how KZfaq's ad commission on copyrighted songs returns to the songwriter, not the person who uploaded the video. It's not very far from Ted Nelson's original conception of the 'net 50 years ago. This would probably require something like blockchain technology. It would be nice if people who are already envisioning a next internet that fixes the inherent problems of this one would give some thought to having it be non-ad-based. Nothing against advertising but it's the default business model for everything because users have become used to getting stuff free.

This proof that in out life has no free will in this vr simulation..our job is just experiencing the life ...but I still believe we are able to do something in future..such as we create a new universe and switch our conciousness to that universe we fully control...I don't know...

Second Life with an Oculus. Or Project Sansar... People have already proven they're not ready. They still think it's the SL platform that's at fault. It would be like everyone saying your Internet Explorer is at fault for all the adult content online.

***** Porn. That's what drove HD graphics. And LCD displays before that. Every advancement in visual tech has gotten its legs because a market wants it for porn. Only then does gaming takes over along side it. But nobody wants to talk about that.

I just don't think a bot can know my preferences or intentions as they are dynamic and thus any attempt to predict what I'm looking for is flawed. I got better search results years ago especially for things related to programming for example, than i do today.
