This film pokes fun at ALL organized religion. They were also poking fun at British politics at the time when the liberal parties were fighting for purity of ideas while the conservative parties were consolidating power. Monty python was a comedy group of 6 men - not a person.

One of the Python's, Terry Gilliam (the only American in the group) was also their animator and did all their cartoon titles and bits. He went on to be a legendary director in his on right... making classics like Time Bandits, Brazil, 12 Monkeys, The Fisher King, and The Adventures of Baron Munchhausen. Hes kind of a visual genius.. and his movies are all works of art. Worth looking into his stuff.

Fun fact: During the Falklands War, the HMS Sheffield was hit by Argentinian missile and slowly sinking but thankfully the crew were rescued. To keep their morale up, the crew sang "Always Look On the Bright Side of Life" and even left in the line "Worst things happen out at sea, ya know" when they sang it.

You don't think these jokes would fly today? They didn't fly then! Religious groups across Europe and the United States protested, boycotted, and banned this film. Particularly in the UK, but one of the Nordic countries banned it entirely, leading one of its neighbors to promote your ability to see it as a tourist feature! It was also banned in some city or county or shire in England until relatively recently, when the woman who plays Judith was elected to office there, and organized a big screening. This is all from what I've read and heard, of course.

It was only banned in very few towns in the UK by some of the local councils. I went to see the first showing in London in Leicester square. The cinema was packed out. What made the film even funnier were the Priests and nuns outside (in their silly religious costumes) trying to stop people going to see the film. Needless to say, they didn't succeed.

I was raised in the middle East and the place for public lashings ( whipping) executions and other forms of punishment was literally across the street from my school. We would be in class hearing screaming, gunfire and trucks reversing as with stonings in the modern world a hole is dug with a few stones given to the crowd for them to throw then a truck would back up with stones in the back which would be dumped on them. The sound of a truck reversing ( beeping) still makes me feel sick. Its no wonder i couldn't concentrate in school. Seriously what cretin thought building a school there was a good idea.

The "big nose" thing is them making fun of an old antisemitic stereotype. If you look at those near last shots at ~29:49, as the camera's pulled back, you can make out Brian swinging his head back and forth, implying he finally gave up and joined in with the singing.

Monty Python isn't a he, it is them. The pythons are six actors and writers. Monty Python (also collectively known as the Pythons)[2][3] were a British comedy troupe formed in 1969 consisting of Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin. The group came to prominence for the sketch comedy series Monty Python's Flying Circus, which aired on the BBC from 1969 to 1974. Their work then developed into a larger collection that included live shows, films, albums, books, and musicals; their influence on comedy has been compared to the Beatles' influence on music.[4][5][6] Their sketch show has been called "an important moment in the evolution of television comedy".[7

Oh my gosh, you guys are such great reactors! You know what I love about you guys? You've seen plenty of stuff already! You're just filling in! Loved that you knew enough of the Bible to catch little jokes and references. So much of this movie is just based in actual historical stuff, especially all the different denominations and factions within the same religions. It's like Blazing Saddles but for the history of religion, instead of the history of American racists. Obviously you got all that, loud and clear. LIke most Python, every time I see it, I pick up different jokes. I learn something in a book or a documentary, three years later I'm watching Life Of Brian and suddenly understand the historical reference in some joke I just figured was silly and meant nothing. lol. Ok, Reservoir Dogs, Life Of Brian.....let's see what you else you got on this channel! :)

@TTM9691
@TTM9691 Жыл бұрын
@@byrdmanteddie It's worth a watch if you know going in that it's a real burn on the history of racism. I personally am not dying to see you guys react to it. Every reactor who does it - and there are tons - gets it, but 90% of the time they're sent in blind to it, and they have to spend the first twenty minutes figuring out what they're watching. It's Mel Brooks and Richard Pryor doing the script (Cleavon Little plays the part Pryor was supposed to play, he's fantastic). It's great, it's hilarious, brilliant comedy that's rooted in historical fact, super influential. I'm not maligning it at all. But there are tons of other comedies I love and I think it's SLIGHTLY weird that of all the comedies, THAT'S the one so many dudes request. Here's what you will get in the comments: "you couldn't make that today with the 'woke' blah blah blah....cancel culture" all that whiny bulls**t. In fact, it's a direct line from "Blazing Saddles" to "Dave Chapelle Show", but you get the drift. You'll probably get people telling you to watch stuff like "Tropic Thunder" and "Airplane" after that. And defintely "Young Frankenstein", which was Mel Brooks' other big movie, which came out the same year as "Blazing Saddles". But me personally, I'm not requesting or suggesting "Blazing Saddles" and I almost didn't mention it in my original comment because I didn't want you to think I was! ::D (But it's definitely a classic for a reason. It's not a parody of westerns, it's a satire on racism and that's always a good thing. But they don't shy away from any language, let's just leave it at that!

That is simply not true. First, scene 13 was not done in one take, it was done many times. Also the guard behind Brian on the left is Bernard McKenna, he is an icon within British comedy TV, friends with Palin and Cleese and he played 4 different roles in the film and was part of the writing team. The 4 guards together played 12 different roles in the film and were respected professional comic actors. They were following stage direction as the guards laughing was an important part of the story as it was how Brain gets away.
