Yes, I know. I always told myself I wouldn't do it. I would work as a picker of some sorts. I guess as a backpacker you have to keep an open mind and embrace which ever comes your way. So yes, we did it. 3 months of tomato picking. I will let you decide if it is truly as bad as they say !

Just for anyone wondering that week they all made roughly $23040. divided by 22 = $1047. Meaning each working made $1047. which is equivalent to about £580 each! Not bad for a weeks work!

Cool--I picked close by in Gundagai in 2001. Looks a lot easier now than back then---ten guys in one room with hard bunk beds---was great though--met my wife there and still together nearly 20 years later.

a very comfortable farm job i must say. you are provided with a seat and it moves on its own lol. does all farm have this combine in australia?

For real. It's such an easy labor work lol like how fortunate they are. They don't even have to stand 😂 but some of us has to walk through thorny bushes under the sun that is much hotter than the Aussie sun and on top of that we had to do everything with hands😂😂

some advice--wear washing up gloves that go to your elbows or otherwise cut the end off long socks to wear on your arms--the tomato leaves will make your hands and arms stain green and takes forever to wash off. Did this for 8 months solid in Gundagai, Bundaberg and Ayr. Hardcore but made some great friends back in 2001. We didnt have chairs like that--just crouching down and walking along!!

My advice is you stay in any backpackers lodge in Oz and they will publish the job advertisement (farm, construction etc) at the bulletin board overthere.

I am hoping to get my visa soon and I’m wondering 2 things: 1- can you do those 88 farm days at anytime during the year or just at the end of the visa? 2- are there fruir picking/farm jobs at all times during the year or just during certain seasons? I think you can do them anytime but go onto the Australian immigration website or you can call them to find info. You're gonna want as much info as possible. You may not get a great job, it's best to have some money saved so you don't have to rely on your wages which can be very low. Sometimes they won't pay you for weeks and there's nothing you can do! Have fun.

Why do they pick off the stems? I've always noticed that if you leaf the stem on tomatoes last longer.

Probably because it does not look good and the shopper does not want to see ugly stems on their tomato particularly when they pay by the kilo.

They tale off the stems so the fruit dose not get damaged as when tomato has a stem and rolls next to another tomato the soft skin gets damaged, I use to pick and then drive the machines I spent 5 years doing this job

Guys and girls its 18c per kilo think about it there not paying 80c per kilo when you buy tomatoes at coles its like $8.00 kilo.So yeah $800aud per week after tax.

According to math, each of the estimated 22 mentioned toward last part. Very clever indeed. 80 cents times so many workers on the same dedicated team. Good job, kids! Kudos on getting to travel while you're able to enjoy the one time experience of doing hard human labor and never having to deal with those negatives I heard about in another post online...bad employers not providing for migratory workers and charging them money up front.. I have learned much from your documenting your experiences...thank you.

The pay is clearly not great when you think of the long hours put in (otherwise the place would be full of Australians), the work is boring, back-breaking & repetitive and the desire to get a year 2 visa is the only incentive for most of the people interviewed in that field.I'll give it a miss thanks.
