Britain's nuclear submarines are so secret they surface only to take on food, and non-operational contact is limited to 120 words. Our Defence Correspondent Alistair Bunkall has met the crew of HMS Vigilant, one of the UK's four Trident nuclear submarines. Read more here trib.al/up0FtIP

There are two. Red is the 'real' one and black for training. They are modeled on US Police Magnum pistols. Much heavier than the little Scalextric controller.

No - missile bodies are US, not sure about launch tubes. Hill, propulsion, control etc are all British although I am sure some US stuff is in non - critical areas. Reactor is entirely British design although the US did help obliquely in the early days. Now there is much more information sharing. Warheads are all British including the plutonium.

50 Ducks In A Hot Tub deterrents maintain stability and in stability a nation thrives, the UK has been cutting back on military spending as the world was becoming more stable now there’s been a significant ramp up in global tensions there must be a build up of our military, before WW2 appeasement was used at the last minute to make time for rearmament and only let the third reich gain more momentum and confidence since then it has been British foreign policy never to bury our heads in the sand again.

to say "there are 17,000 nuclear weapons in the world today, and they represent an extreme threat to the UK", is perhaps a slightly melodramatic statement and a bit naive. During the cold war, which lasted about 44 years, no nuclear bomb was ever fired. I agree the UK needs submarines and ships to fire nuclear weapons to protect the UK, if needed, but . . . well. I said it above.

@@DaGabbaGangsta The missiles are maintained in the US and rotated from a common pool used by both navies. The UK uses its own warheads based, it is believed, on the physical properties of the American W76 warhead. The US uses w88 warheads as well. In the future both navies will use "independently developed" but strikingly similar warheads which America is calling W93. The reason why it is stressed they are independently developed is that both countries are signatories of the non-proliferation treaties and the two countries can't swap nuclear weapons technology. Best get your vote in parliament done sooner then. I doubt we can build 4 new nuclear subs in just 4 years. We never do anything first time and on budget. So I estimate 2040 😂😂😂

Why does not the Queen have launch authority and only the Prime Minister? What happens if both are taken out?
@markjackson7650
@markjackson7650 7 жыл бұрын
onetruekeeper there is a letter on board the sub called the letter of last resort or something to that effect. and it is the last official act of HMG. in the event the prime minister is killed and contact cannot be made to mainland UK by the sub. the letter is opened and it states what the prime minister wants the captain to do with the sub. I believe the options available are to hand the sub to another nato country (most likely America) or use the weapon against whoever nuked Britain.

I assume this letter has the launch codes to enable missile launch at the Captain's discretion?

onetruekeeper not entirely sure the only person who will ever truly know is the prime minister as the letter is destroyed unopened when a new prime minister is elected

Well there can. Theres just an agreement in place for another 5 years.. only down side is Washington provide most of the key parts that make it a nuke... it would be mentle to think a country can not protect themselfs without permission from another country. Nukes are very expensive to keep. Especially when I can not see them ever been used..

Billions and billions on weaponry whilst we watch our NHS waste away and poverty rise on UK soil. It's my prayer that one day a multilateral disarmament occurs (If possible a unilateral. I don't care what other countries are doing). I just wonder what steps the current govt are making to work to this.

Billions on nuclear weapons to stop a major war is more important than the NHS in stance. The world has a forced peace because of these weapons, if we didn't, the world would be fighting eachother every day of the week.
