What a nice ride down memory lane, I'm 60 now but as an 8yr old I was enthralled with the Red Baron and had to have the model, then two years later it came to a car show near me and I still have the pictures. Thanks for the trip!

It was the red Barron with its inline 6 that got me interested in 6s instead of V8s back in the 70s. When I was 16 (1974). I bought a 55 Chevy with a 235. ($510). Everywhere I looked my friends had SBCs or SBFs. Boorrrriiiing! I wanted something different! With all of 90hp and nearly 2 tons it took 19.68 seconds to do the quarter mile at the drag strip. I poured money into it. Rebuilt it with a 54 Vette cam, headers, a Clifford research intake an a small Holley 4bbl. It might have made 125hp after all was said and done. I got the quarter mile down to 18.5!!!!! But it was my car! That’s all that mattered.

Here, in russia, getting a v8 is too expensive for a young builder like me, so we are kinda stuck to using a stock zmz 402 motor (is case if you are building a “Volga”). It’s a 2.45 liter overhead valve inline 4, making 100 hp stock. With a modified stock carburetor (again, close to zero performance options in this department, the best one is getting one from a truck), custom exhaust and a higher profile camshaft you can get this engine to 130-140 hp. That’s good for about 11sec 0-60 time and it’s pretty big improvement for a car, that in stock form goes 0-60 in about 20 seconds

ganymedeIV4, yeah I’m older than dirt! I remember when the ‘65 mustang was introduced and they made a big deal about how it could go 0-60 in 8 seconds. Today a Toyota Yaris would beat that. My old ‘55 with its ‘blue-flame six’ was a big step up from riding a bicycle.

dick liddle, it was a very torque-y motor. Chevy put them in a lot of trucks. But it wasn’t very fast. I was a kid at the time and I loved mine. My ‘55 was a 4-door 150 with a 3-speed on the column. Nothing fancy. It was a cab for a while before I owned it.

Those ohc pontiac 6s are sure neat. Way ahead of their time. A john DeLorean idea i believe. With the sprint package on them they made reasonable hp. 215 is pretty darn good for a 6 of the era!

I agree Tay S. The Pontiac OHC 6 Cylinder was a GREAT engine. I had a Firebird with one. It was a real kick to drive. My first "new" car as a teen in the '60s. Looking back, John Delorean certainly knew what he was doing. Pontiac offered some good OEM speed parts for it & I bought them all; as my paychecks would allow. The best were the high-lift camshaft & upgraded rocker arms, valve springs a performance intake & 4bbl carb. I eventually had a custom exhaust header made & new 2.5" exhaust with a cut-out to open the exhaust; for the track & weekend street racing. 🙂These modifications made a big improvement in both torque & horsepower. My Firebird came without AC & had a 3:73, limited slip//posi differential. It was quick. These engines were offered in the Tempest as well. I test drove the Tempest & the Firebird. The Firebird was my first choice. The Tempest seemed too heavy for the 6cyl. Regardless, I wanted the Firebird more than the Tempest. I eventually sold my Firebird & used the cash to special order a new '69 GTO Judge, Ram Air IV, 4spd & hide-a-way headlights. I've gone through 2 wives...but...my Judge is still here. 🙂 BTW: The big issues with the 6cyl OHC PMD Engines (in stock form) were the timing "belt" and the rocker arms. The timing belt replacement intervals could NOT be neglected. To cut costs, Pontiac used cheaper rocker arms made of very low-quality metal. Even with casual//easy driving, it was common for them to break; usually after the warranty expired. In my...present day...opinion, it was "intentional" sabotage by GM...to cast a shadow over Mr. Delorean. He was surrounded by enemies at PMD//GM. This engine was his conception. After he created The GTO, he was despised by the "top brass" at Chevrolet. In their opinion, The Pontiac GTO was directly responsible for diminishing Corvette sales. I apologize for this lengthy montage...watched Fireball 500 tonight & ended-up here. So, I thought I'd write this to ya'...BUT...didn't intend to go-on to this degree. 🙂 Best regards, Ben

Well, most of our guys in our crowd considered the Pontiac OHV 6 an interesting toy. If you were looking for a six, you looked towards the Mopar Slant six. Especially with its iconic long ram 4 bbl Hyper Pak. But for a year or so, the Pontiac OVH was considered one of the cool engines of the times....

@@cindys1819 Slant 6 is a great engine. But it is very hard to extract any great performance out of them with the stock head unless you force feed them. Can't have the same head from the original 170 and expect to to breath on a 225.

Your comment about the smoke from the Red Baron reminded me. I knew a veteran from WW1 who was a pilot in the Australian Flying Corps. He told me the engines in those early planes used castor oil which is a laxative. To counteract the effects of the fumes the pilots used to anesthetize their gut with a good swig of brandy before they flew. I don't know if you had to be drunk to fly one of those rickety string bags but I guess it helped.

R.I.P. Mr. Barris. The Red Baron , that is "top gun!". The actual aeroplane of the period would have had a Mercedes Benz straight six. That's why the car had that same format. The designer knew exactly what he was doing! I think the Fokker was probably easier to fly!!

Dennis.... that's a bayonet shape dipstick NOT a sword ! And the car was made to sound like a biplane....NOT a machine gun. Sheeesh ! I seen this car at a show when I was a kid and completely overwhelmed. I had the Hot Wheel and model before that. Wow !

I was a cross country truck driver back in the early 90's. The fireball car was in the Hallway of a warehouse in new jersey partially covered in boxes. I asked and the owner said it was for sale 2500 bucks! He was serious! I didn't have the money at the time. A couple years later I saw the car again in Mopar museum in Kansas.
