Hi everyone! Back with a HUGE life update this time...I finally became a Swiss PR and obtained the Permit C after 5 years!
As a non-EU, EFTA citizen, this would have normally taken 10 years, but with a bit of luck and some strategic planning I managed to HALVE the number of years and got mine within 5 years, with one single successful application approved within a month!
Watch this video to the end to learn more about the benefits of applying for the Swiss Permanent Residency (Permits), the criteria for application, and my personal tips for how to make your application as smooth as possible. I wish you the best of luck in your immigration journey to Switzerland!

Congrats Olivia and thanks so much for all your videos! I've just spent two weeks in Switzerland and used your vids to make the most of my time there. I'm from London and just realised I can get Irish citizenship through my grandparents, seriously considering moving there! It's so serene and beautiful. Also felt quite a bit more relaxed and sparse compared to UK cities.

Thank you for the video, it was super helpful! Do you know whether the 5 years of continuous stay for US/CA citizenship holders applies for five years of continual education, or is a working status of 5 years required?

The C permit is called " never leave permit " restrictions are - you are not required to do military service ( if you are young ) and not vote, but you can buy property, if you leave the country for more then two years then you lose the permit.

congrats! I did not realize that it is that difficult. I am also non-EU, came to switzerland to work for a big Swiss company, and at the end of the first 5 years with a B permit, I expected them to ask me to apply for another 5 years, but they just sent me a letter inviting me to go to the local council office to collect my C permit. I did not have to do anything to apply for it. But this was in 2008.

Switzerland is logical. You had a good job for 5 years and paid taxes and all the other stuff and have no debts, than you get c permit or citizenship without a struggle. Of course there is a little difference for EU and non EU.

Congrats on the C-Permit I wonder now what the difference is when the partner is a Swiss citizen. Oh and one hint, yes you have Asian looks, but then again, one of my frens is Black, and he's about as Swiss as it gets, hell he is either speaking in his Swiss dialect or English. So looks are very desieveing. But I can understand why you'd prefer to keep the Singaporean citizanship over the Swiss on 🙂

I believe you have to live in Switzerland in total of 10 years in order to apply. And depending on the municipal you are living in they can be super strict with the citizenship. Some let the whole town/ municipal vote upon you. Western part of Switzerland is known to be less strict by giving out citizenships.

Really great content. Happy for you. I had a query though: If you (non EU/EFTA/EEA) are married to a Swiss citizen who is working in Switzerland, is it possible for you to get a work permit to work in Germany? For clarity, here the Swiss citizen is still working in Switzerland. But the non-EU/EFTA/EEA spouse from the third country wants to work in Germany. Is it legally possible?

The biggest difference between B and C permit is tax level (lower for C) plus you can buy a property and rent it (b can buy for purpose of living in it). Additionally C perm and citizens need to file their taxes. With B permit you renew it each 5 years, not one year.

@@Olliechinny thanks for the reply! I’m on my 4th year and wondering if it’s possible to attempt at Y5-so you gave me hope 🥰 I guess I misunderstood (and maybe it’s canton to canton regulations as well, I’m in Basel); I thought the requirements you enumerated were the standard everywhere, which we would still need to prove at 10th year; and that fast track means you have eligible circumstances (like having Swiss or EU spouse turning C) on top of the standard.
