This is my experience from ½ year of living without internet, doing a little radical digital detox experiment... I actually learned a lot about my internet habits, and it was my first step towards being more mindful when it comes to digital goods. Digital mindfulness is a very important part of practicing digital detox. I would even say, it is the first step to making a change, if you want to stop wasting time on the internet or if you want to understand how to stop binge watching. It helped me a lot, and I wouldn't want to miss this experience. However, living offline also had its downsides, and I am going to give a quick overview over the pros & cons of living without internet.

Have you ever tried to go completeley offline? For how long, and what was it like?

I plan on quitting the Internet for the rest of my life after I am done with my education. I want to live a life like Norman from The Promised Neverland (while he was in the Orphanage.) I really just want to simply read, study, play, explore, be curious... live a better life.

Longest time I have done was 8 months, recently I did 6 weeks. I don’t have social media and haven’t had it for years. I focused doing meditation, martial arts, reading, be in nature and involve in outdoors in extreme physical activities. Your mind will be incredibly sharp

Yes, that's very true. Even if I just go on vacation, and I will be hiking, not be in a house most of the day, it is amazing how I don't miss a thing. 8 months is really long. No social media must be a dream. For me it's love/hate. I like to share stuff and communicate with old friends. But sometimes I think: Why can't anybody just call?!

Yeah, it helps to shift things back to reality a bit 😅I think nothing separates my generation as much from the one to come as the memory of an age where you didn't have a smartphone with you at all times... Bit even a phone tbh. I miss it a little bit.

I was 21 in the fall of 95 when the internet became publicly available. I have been always wanting to feel life the way it was before just last week I was watching KZfaq and there was a clip about how other members of a band feel about their ex vocalist. That was what made me realize this is information I don't need to know and really it has no use for me, and that made me realize I have to avoid so much distraction. I have spent this week like there is no internet unless it has a living purpose like work or pay for bills, or check an upcoming delivery. The first day it felt it was so peaceful.. I will continue to do this as I am truly leaving behind a lot of the things which consumed my time. Thanks for the video which was the only reason why I came to KZfaq.

I have a television screen (a gift) hooked to a dvd player. I pay €5 a year to the local library and I can rent as many arthouse dvd’s as I want. 😬 Nobody of my age (born in the eighties too) understands this and everyone is baffled that I only pay for very cheap internet and that’s it... 😬 no Netflix, no tv channels...

Thank you for sharing your own experience with quitting internet! I have started the process of preparing for it (spending less and less time on it, trying to focus more on everyday activities, limiting screentime) and i think im going to do a full (or as full as studying allows me) detox for at least a month soon. Altought i often feel lost with what to do with time I used to spend on social media or mindlessly watching youtube, I can tell I fell less stressed and more comfortable just... being myself. I honestly cannot wait how I will feel after letting myself be disconnected from it for longer.

I had to experience 2 months in summer without internet being 13 years old, with a windows XP computer on a 160GB hard drive, since then i have 1 big drive with all the media i need and another one as a backup, since going linux i don't care anymore about the PC crashing so i'm always prepared to go without net and even without electricity, always keeping books unread in the shelf, the addiction resides on the social media innertia your age group may have for interaction, which innevitably takes on you, it's been a very rough thing to me to overcome. Thanks for the video, it was a very introspective journey, i hope you're doing well.

I'm just on a comment answering spree going over everyone I didn't respond to yet, so here we go... You're 13? First of all, very cool to get into Linux at that age, I wish I had. And I pretty much had that same enlightening, just in my 20s. I wrote my thesis on a 10 year old Toshiba, because my university could not afford a laptop for me. And nothing but Linux Mint would work on it XD

Cool experiment! I wouldn't dare to. But usually when I travel, I don't use (much) internet - only for navigation or something like that. When I volunteered in Mongolia, there was no internet for 3 weeks and all volunteers agreed that this made us spend MUCH more time talking and playing games etc. than if we would have internet access. And we really didn't need it for anything, so it was perfect that way! At home, I really enjoy watching videos like yours to get inspired by other people's life choices etc. But I do watch a certain amount of time and not mindlessly, all evening, every day. Another thing I like is finding snail mail penpals on forums - isn't it a funny contradiction? Still, it works very well! So yay for the internet, but here again: "intentional" is the key word! Now I'm off to go read a book ;)

You are absolutely right, the key is intentional living... 💙🌷

When i cant get my thoughts right id like to make lyrics for a song. During your video i was just writing this. Just felt like sharing it Under the song of just the two of us I used to wake up, check my phone Then lay in bed for way too long, while the sun had already set I watched youtube while i ate, liked this chick i'd want to date But that's empty there's just regret This doesn't work for me, This isn't adding to my life It aint work for me, I'll go offline I notice that i dont draw no more, dont get my camera out anymore. Be less outside, hardly ever read a book. Only sport on the given days. I just don't do shit. Just sit behind my laptop playing games, buying stuff, watching movies. What youre saying, being entertained. Your video really speaks to me. I got two more papers i have to write before i graduate and get a job. The feeling of not having to be as much on my laptop anymore (because i have to write the papers, and gaming as procrastination)) really motivates me to finish these papers. When that stress is gone i can start forming my life as id like it.

It was interesting in my case because I use the internet for my mental health aswell. I reduced my internet usage for a month or so and even that had a major effect on me. Both positive and negative. It started when I moved to a new place (which was already a stressful event on its own). Basically a lot of stuff was changing all at once in different areas of my life and then I realised there will be no internet at my apartment. I only had limited mobile data and I could only access the wifi at work. In stressful times a lot of bad stuff comes surfacing inside me, which was normally locked away. Basically the internet was my psychologist for years. Now it was limited. At a very stressful time in my life. However, the positives I noticed were: - A lot of free time. - Feeling more balanced - I felt like practicing more of my craft, and so I was more productive. - I appreciated the small things more. - I went for walks more often. - Spent more time with people. - Used journaling more as a coping strategy. - Downloaded educational videos at work that I would watch at home. - Used the internet and my phone more as a tool than a "toy". - Realised how shit I was at dealing with my built-up negativity. So at least now I'm aware of the thing I should work on. - Realised how much I isolate myself from others. I love solitude but sometimes it's too much. - You don't know how addicted you are unless you try living with little or no internet. Now I know. - There's a kind of "hive mind" that internet users become part of after longterm usage, things like humor, patterns of thinking etc. I am finding more of my own voice more now that I have drifted away from that. - The internet is a powerful source of learning material, which should be used and appreciated as long as we have access to. - In times of negativity, simply watching videos from positive people can help. But it shouldn't be the case. I have to be aware of that fact and use more reliable strategies. - For a lot of creative people the internet is a source of inspiration and reference material. It is difficult - not impossible though - to find these in the world rather than on your phone.

I have a 19 years old son... So no internet is not an option! 😂 But a few years back he left for the summer and I did a 3 months with no home internet. It was great for me and I would like to go back there eventually. However I miss "my friends/connection" all around the world, like you for instance. So I think setting timers on my phone where apps go on "sleep mode" between 9pm and 9am and where I am limited to a certain amount of time only is a good balance for me. Just wanted to share my opinion... also I am retired so that means no home internet means no internet pretty much!

I would really love to do one of these detoxes for a whole month. I think it would be fun to document the days and how I feel, however unfortunately, both of my jobs require the internet, so I can't do a 100% detox. I would imagine it would suck to ONLY use the internet for work. I think it is awesome going for 6 months, but I'm not sure I could manage that. I have some webinars I have to host next month, but maybe a month without afterwards could be something I can look forward to. I'll have to keep the internet for work though, but I think I can manage that. Imagine all the work I'll get done.
@UndineAlmani

Maybe you can try to separate work and internet better. I know, it is hard. But what helped me for instance, was a cut-off after a certain daytime. That can work, but you would have to shut it down or put your phone/computer in another room maybe. I programmed my router to shut down over night. That is also an option. Another thing is also to go offline during vacations. We are so used to being online, even if we're out in a cabin... I think, when it comes to these digital detox experiences, even a small change can have a big effect. Like putting your phone in another room, or not next to your bed. Or shutting down the internet after 8 pm. That's probably hard enough already :-)

This is the same way I feel. I typically use the Internet to watch KZfaq videos, post art via IG and blogs, also for my job (in terms of e-mails from work) + additional side hustles (I occasionally sell second hand items online and do art commissions) or to look things up. I have slowly started to try and not use the Internet as much (for example if I am out, I either leave my phone or have it switched off during tasks so I am not distracted; when going for a walk with my dad, I did leave my phone and lasted about 4 hours which was actually not bad). As much as the internet is beneficial for me, the main issue is how we are so reliant on it. I feel that as technology develops over time, the internet is pretty much a requirement for almost everything. If say you are job hunting for example, you need the internet as every job requires online applications (since you can’t go to the shops in person to hand out CV’s). The same applies for benefits in my country (claims are online now), schooling etc. I have read Nicholas Carr’s “The Shallows” and according to the book, we are so used to online use we can’t tune out.

I see it the same way. I quit the vast majority of online / cloud / subscription services. It's all scam to me. They are supposed to give me a lifetime offer and I must be able to download it and use it offline as much, on whatever device and for however long I want. Otherwise it's not just a little but complete shit to me. It feels restrictive and intrusive, like all these services go from "just download it" to "we now own your usage options and your data and can change it whenever we please". On the topic, there will be a new video out next week or so. Maybe that's for you. I feel the internet is going down the drain. For me it will be something like an "internet curfew" aka a limited time window in which my router will be on and after that, bye bye.

I've been thinking for quite a while now about ditching my home broadband and going offline. For the last few years, I have found myself being much less productive than I have ever been and the Internet plays a big role in this. I have also realized that the online world has an enormously negative effect on my mental health. The reason I have not yet done it, even though these thoughts have been buzzing around my head for a couple of years is that without internet access much of what I do for entertainment and communication requires the Internet and so I was fearful that without it things might be worse. I realize that this is also a symptom of how the Internet has a grip on me. I'm reaching out for help. What do others think? Has anyone else taken extended time away from the Internet? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for listening

But I think, you sum it up pretty well: Without the internet, we would miss out on a lot of things, a lot of content, and I would miss out on nice comments and sharing my thoughts to someone who might be at the other end of the world. 💛 🌼That really is amazing.

I sometimes forget what a great learning + research tool the internet is outside of work. A good reminder not to use it to binge watch content or get lost... I think anxiety and insomnia promote each other. A solution can be improving your adrenaline metabolism by moving more. Working out or walking etc. reduces adrenaline levels. But of course it is more than that... just an idea for a start. Good luck!

I have a video about how I quit smoking, but I'm not sure it's still public. Anyway, one learning of mine over the years: You can not quit something that's intuitive and enjoyable to you forever. I mean, theoretically you can quit delicious food or drinking, but what has allowed me to quit smoking was that I still get a few cigarettes each year. It's never "never again", I have turned this into "I don't need this now". Which imo is way more powerful. So my tip at this point: Don't say "quit", say something else that fits your struggle better, like "improve my digital consumption habits" or "be picky" or "use the internet for learning more".... because you really can't quit unless you go non-digital, which is pretty unrealistic. For some people, it might be the best option, but for me e.g. it wasn't, so I wanted to share this real quick. I find that all-or-nothing proclamations only make me relapse and feel bad, but not really change. Realistic and honest ones though help me want to do better instead of feeling like I have to to better. I hope you find a mindful and helpful way for yourself to deal with all the digital noise. It is truly too much to handle these days, and I am 99.999% sure you're not alone in this struggle :)

That sounds very good! I remember doing this a while back. I created a new KZfaq account for it and started from scratch too, to avoid binge watching all the same content that kept me from using my time...

The society is already progressed to the point where the internet is a requirement to function. The problem I have with the internet is that I have ~20:1 ratio of input to output of information or productive work. You can clog your backlog with stuff to read, to watch, to learn, just 5 clicks and you have 500 hours worth of content waiting for you to consume, at the same time my whole life is basically meaningless, emotionless broken record, same thing over and over and over, it's depressing.

The only way out is out. It's not like anybody is forcing us to consume. To use it for banking, authentication and shit, sure. A tool. But entertainment is a misconception anyway. I would never watch an opera anywhere else but at the friggin opera! Why would I use the internet to substitute for reality? Unless for education or because I can't afford it or it's dangerous...? But people do it not for inspiration or anything. It's leisure. Instead of living they watch.

i'm curious when humanity will be done with the internet. I think there is already a vibe of people building something beyond internet. real world, connection and society. but how to communicate it with humanity and let them find the offline life? hmm

I think the internet will only go down if modern humanity goes down. I'm for change but not that much change. A library of knowledge and ideas is great. A mindless brain dump is a waste...

I really enjoy your perspective. I don't agree or disagree perse, so please don't take my questions as attacks, but why is being intellectual so important to you? Is it self-esteem related or some biological drive or a need to separate yourself from others? I myself want so badly to be seen as intellectual because I don't think I am, but when I confront that thought I feel it's silly. How about you?
@UndineAlmani

Hm, I never really thought about that. I think it's academic achievements in general, those are just highly valued in my circle of people I guess. But also it really broadens your horizon to study things in versatile ways. So I believe the most interesting conversations always happen with people with a broad experience. But the older I get the more I care if somebody is rather kind, chill and fun than educated. I don't really have an answer. I can say for sure that it feels great to have a bunch of degrees and certificates and also determines that number on the paycheck pretty hard here in Germany

@@UndineAlmani Ah that makes sense. I have very little experience with non-American life beyond the things I read. Here it really feels like everyone is required to be the best at something. It feels very inauthentic? A great example is how it is assumed here in America if you're rich you're intelligent at a level unreachable by the rabble. Germany seems nice though with what little I know of it.

Well, we have no ivy league and almost no private schools. And the private schools get the worst teachers sometimes cause they pay them less... 😅 (Before anyone asks, yes, I got that from experience and two other teachers,... It's also the same everywhere in the private sector, such as daycare or hospitals or elderly care homes). In contrast, the tech industry pays better than e.g. university, intelligence agencies, police, military... So no incentive to go there unless you have the ability to become a professor... A degree always comes with more respect, especially a PhD. But I wouldn't say anyone expects you to be a genius. That's a uni thing. IRL, people expect an average peer. In fact, I think it can be pretty damaging if you're showing too much knowledge.

I like maps too. Maps are THE best thing in the wilderness. Don't want to rely on my phone any more than I have to. Sadly, 🌿 is not legal in my country, so 🤷🏼‍♀️
