2019 is just a few days away and today, I'll be showing you guys my current security camera and smart home setup. I have reviewed almost all the products that I'll be showing you guys and these are the devices that I'm using everyday and not just review them one time and put them in a corner.
If you have been following my channel, you know that I have reviewed a lot of WiFi security cameras and smart home devices this year... but which ones do you think I use?
Let's start first on the outside of the house and I'll show you which cameras and smart home devices I have and then I'll take you inside.

I purchased the bundle of the spotlight camera battery and Ring 2 doorbell after watching your channel at work(my boss doesn't know lol) for a few weeks. @First Name I dont think he needs the cameras and lights to stop you they are there to tell him where you are and give him a chance to grab his guns and secure his family he would have the advantage cuz he can clearly see you just like your stell doors someone can still get in if they really wanted to steal doors dont do anything if a robber catches you leaving or coming home

I talked to a friend the other day that use to sell home security systems. He was trying to hire me on. I said why? People aren't relying on that "1980's" mindset for home security. Thanks a lot! Because of you I finally was able to decide on the reolink 5mp poe system, with so many security cameras systems on the market it's easy to get confused and overwhelmed on deciding, but your videos really help narrow down and explain the pros and cons of each camera system, and I've been very pleased with reolink thus far thanks again

Hi. Can anyone answer ...I had an existing lorex camera system....I needed more cameras and wanted motion detection..I had no luck ...I bought a new lorex 8 camera motion alert wired system..will I be able to view both systems on my lorex flir. Which I use on my iPad and iPhone...will I be able to use lorex home app so I can get motion alerts? I have one cable modem that both Ethernet cables are attached to... basically can I get two separate accounts toviewon my iphone and iPads...I know I can use two separate monitors...also can I view one systems cameras on my tv? Thanks a ton for these videos #LifeHackster, just curious how the phone app for the Reolink is working after a year? Samsung SmartHome hosed us and I'm looking for a better wired replacement ...especially because the 1080p system from Reolink is on sale this week for $380. Do you think ANY of the Simplisafe gear is worth owning? ( versus the RING)....your doorbell review has me torn between the Ring and the Reolink. If anyone else wants to offer suggestions too that would be greatly appreciated, just trying to avoid buying three systems in a 2 year span of time...ughhh $$

With your YI Dome Camera inverted on your ceiling, is the picture inverted as well? I started out with Dropcam and loved it, but since Nest took over, I'm not so in love anymore. I'm now more inclined to go with Yi and the Wyze cameras.

You can flip the image in the settings. This Yi dome has served me well.

@LifeHackster I looking into getting the ring pro and maybe the floodlight cameras, but am wanting about 5-6 cameras covering my front porch, back porch, garage, outside alley by AC unit, and inside my living room and kitchen leading to garage. My question is do I get a constantly recording setup or just get more ring motion activated ones. I don’t want a bunch of apps and am not tech savvy and no voice activation stuff at my home. Which setup and system do I get?

If you are able to wire a POE NVR system, then it is a cheaper way to go because you can have an 8 camera system for around 750 bucks while if it is with Ring, you will be out at least $1500 for 6 floodlights.

Wow, I don't think Fort Knox has as many security cameras and flood lights as you. My first Ring floodlight camera will also be two years old in April too followed by my Ring Pro doorbell and Ring spotlight camera and solar panel a few months after that. I am pleased with them. The only thing I do not like with Ring is I lost all my preferred tone alerts last August with the android 8 update and Ring supposedly is still working on the problem. For instance, I used to have "motion at your spotlight cam" which is no more with android 8 update. I had to select a old doorbell sound. Unlike your phone, I did not get the Halloween and Christmas tone alerts. Ring gives no reason except that it won't work with android 8 phones and they are working on it. Lastly, I did buy a solar NON RING floodlight for the back of my garage that lights up my backyard which I like. Any motion in my backyard is picked up by my Ring spotlight camera above my back door of my house. Happy New Year to you. Don from Milwaukee

Lol.. Fort Know definitely doesn't have WiFi cameras.... I bet they have hard wired bulletproofed encased wires and cameras. I don't have android devices so I didn't experience your issue but Ring will make it to work. Happy New Year to you too!.

Just found your channel today, great reviews. I've been using Amcrest 4mp wifi cameras (made for indoor but they work fine outdoor under a porch or something, had them for years) but I hate the Amcrest software.. watching recorded videos on the app never plays.. only seems to work correctly with the computer software which is useless if I'm away from home. So I was looking into Ring. I really like how the app/features look, haven't personally tested it but hoping it's more reliable than Amcrest. Watching your reviews, quality isn't as good as my current 4mp camera so that would be a sacrifice. I was hoping to watch this video and come away with an answer but you're using so many brands lol. If you had to go Ring, the floodlight cams would be a better option over the stickup cams? Or do you recommend the stickup cams either wired or battery?

With Ring, their wired cameras are pretty reliable - floodlight, spotlight wired and mount versions and pro doorbell. Overall, the Ring app is pretty reliable too. I have reviews of each camera that I have shown in the video and the links will be in the description.

Right now, the Ring ecosystem is the most diverse as compared to all systems I have tested. They have indoor and outdoor cameras, alarm system, smart locks of popular brands integrate with the alarm and will be releasing their smart lighting soon.

So for indoor and outdoor monitoring with best quality within 20 feet ish and quickest alerts. Would you pick ring stick up cams or arlo ultra or arlo pro 2?

The ring will have the quickest notification followed by Arlo Pro 2 without the subscription and the arlo ultra will have the longest delay because it needs the smart alerts subscription that adds at least 10-15 sec. delay on the notification.

Yes. That is one of the main reasons why the Nest Hello is still in my front door since they did an update last December. The instant view from the hub when somebody presses the doorbell is the perfect setup.

Whats the best doorbell camera? I see you took off the ring cam and are using the Nest. Does that mean the nest is better? Also which is best for floodlight camera the ring? How is the solar powered one? I live in the north east just worried about snow...

I'm still using the Nest Hello and one thing that I liked about it that Ring doesn't yet is when you have the google hub. When somebody rings the doorbell, it is almost instant that the hub will show the camera's view and you can talk to the other person without a lot of delay. Loading up from your smartphone is way slower that this and also, other people inside the house can see and answer the door pretty quick too. I'm hoping will do this with Alexa soon...for now you have to use a verbal command to Alexa to show you the front door which takes longer.

Which outdoor motion light do you suggest, the MR. beams MB3000 or the solar LED lights? Sunlight is not a concern, I was just wondering which light is brighter/ has better motion detection.

I'll go with the solar LED lights. Mr Beams is pretty quick in motion detection though and probably a tad brighter that my solar lights.

Good video. One suggestion I could make which lots of the bigger channels do is beeping out words such as Alexa/Hey Google since these always mess with our devices when watching these videos.

We just bought the Ring Doorbell and have been watching all of your videos to research which cameras to buy. If you were starting all over, for outdoor use would you recommend 1-2 Ring Spotlights and Reolink 8 Cam system, or would you go all Ring cameras instead? We’re just getting started into all of this so looking for some suggestions. Thanks!

PoE NVR system will always be in my setup. This will be the main footage that I have to retrieve is something happens. Uncompressed and highest resolution. My Ring cameras are mostly for notification. They are pretty accurate in detecting motion and little to no false notifications. My reolink system has motion detection but has a lot of false alerts and this is generally on most NVR/DVR camera systems.

Is SWANN's 4K the same as their 5 MP camera's? On your other video you stated that the package 6 camera's, 2 with spotlights and 4 camera's w/o spotlight's? Is it possible to order/but all 6 camera's with spotlights and will SWANN's NVR setup handle the 6 spotlight/camera's?

Swann has a 5MP verision of these cameras. You can order the NVR and the cameras separately on their website so that you can choose all spotlight cams and the NVR will handle 8 of the spotlight cams too.

Just curious, how do all these cameras work with your home wifi without bogging it down? Seems like every single one of these connects to wifi. This has been a concern of mine. I prefer hardwired cameras because of this but of course hardwiring is extremely time consuming.

Of all the WiFi security cameras I have, Nest Hello is the only one that streams and uses the internet (WiFi) 24/7. All the other ones like the Ring, Wyze, Arlo etc. only uses the internet whenever it senses motion. The only time and the only area where somebody can trigger 3 cameras at around the same time is when a person walks across my garage, front yard and the front door and even with that, all cameras will record without any issues.

Lifehackster, thank you for your honest and thorough reviews. Do you have any info. On the ring flood light camera. Have they upgraded there night vision to color camera like you suggested. Yes, they did. They rolled out an update and most if not all of their security light cameras (spotlight cams - battery and wired; floodlight cam) will turn to full color when their lights are on.

Thanks a lot for your videos. Just purchased and tested the wired Ring spotlight camera. It gives me a pixelated image in Live View when there's any motion in the picture. However, recorded video clips are of a good quality. My Internet speed is pretty good. Could you advise what might be the problem? Thanks in advance.

check to see what your RSSI is ... device health -> see if the number is green..lower the better...~ < 60. If not, then you need a WiFi extender.

I went with Ring because I have their security cameras already and the professional monitoring fee plus cloud access to unlimited Ring cameras in one address is only 10 bucks a month or 100 dollars/year. The other brand that I was considering and might check out if they release an updated product would be Simplisafe.

LifeHackster I have been l looking for a good dependable doorbell cam that is quick and you can set the zones to record but do not want to have to pay a subscription. Also want a few basic outdoor cams for front ad garage area. I hope you have some suggestions. You have so may different ones.

As to doorbell that I have tested, they all have subscription fees. I know there are some doorbells out there that has no monthly fees but I haven't tested them out yet.

Impressive review and collection. I would appreciate your comments on Powerline as an alternative to PoE and wifi. Seems like it should be a good compromise for those of us whose houses don't easily accommodate CAT cabling. What do you think?

I might need to check on that. I used to use power line before and it works but I’m not sure it didn’t get more popular than WiFi extenders and mesh networks.

Noticed you dont use wyze cam pan anymore...I am looking to buy this and wyze v2 both. Any reason you are not using the Wyze pan? Is Yi better?

I am not using the Wyze Cam Pan at the moment because the Yi dome is working without any issues. The Wyze Cam Pan also has a bigger footprint that it will not look good in my ceiling. All other areas in my house that I have cameras don't really need a pan and tilt camera. Wyze Cam Pan is a good camera though.

I enjoy your vids. Helps a lot.. Don’t you have to have multiple applications downloaded to control each device? That seems like much. I stuck to all Ring equipment.

Hi LifeHackster. I'm thinking about getting several Ring Spotlight cameras, is it easy to switch between cameras in the Ring app? And are the Ring cameras integrated with each other, like if you turn on the siren on one camera will it turn on the sirens on all the other cameras as well, or do you have to manually turn on each camera's siren? And if you set one camera to start recording, can you have all the other cameras start recording as well, or do you have to manually set each camera to record?

There are no integration yet on the cameras to each other. I think Ring will be integrating it soon though. All Ring cameras will record whenever it senses motion.

LifeHackster, question for you. I notice when my neighbors are turning on their Christmas lights, my Ring Floodlight will not record. Can Christmas lights affect this camera? Have u experience this? Thanks for any response.

As far as I know... No. I have my Christmas lights turned on and I have no issues of it not recording when it senses motion.

For battery powered cameras, Arlo Pros are ok and it works. There is also the Argus 2 or the Argus Pro and the Blink.

Try resetting it or just plug and unplug it and see if it works. They recently updated their app GUI.

Are you able to view the Reolink cameras LIVE feed while you are away from the home using the internet?

Yes you can, as long as the nvr is connected to the internet via ethernet cable. You can view the live feed and playback motion that's been triggered on the cameras anywhere on your phone as long as you got internet service on the device you wish to view it on

Pretty hard to answer at this time. I actually like the new stick up cam battery just because of the motion zoning superimposed on the cameras point of view and it is spot on. Blink also just started to have this feature. Arlo Pro 2 and the Argus 2 are also pretty good choices.

Where did you purchase your solar lights that you have taped to your house? I bought one at Costco that looks similar to the Ring floodlight camera, but I like your slanted solar light better. I wouldn't mind buying 1-2 more solar lights to assist my Ring cameras. I heard you say your Ring floodlight will be two years old in April. Mine will be two years old in June. I liked Ring so much, I bought the Ring Pro doorbell months later followed by Ring solar powered spotlight. Thanks for the info. Don from Milwaukee

Just a heads up. All ring devices with the exception of the old stick up camera and ring doorbell 1 model have 1080p video quality. So if the quality of the spotlight camera does not match that of the new stick up camera something has to be going on with the signal.

The new stick up cam has a different sensor or different setting at least in the exposure. Watch my comparison videos on this cams versus the spotlight cam and you will see the difference.

Do you have a smartwatch? I'm wondering if Android Wear or a Samsung watch will get ring alarm notifications or allow me to arm/disarm the system This thought occurred to me while on vacation and the alarm going into delayed entry when my spouse came home, I left my phone inside and it would have been nice to get a smartwatch notification

Great review! I have not decided what Reolink camera I would put on my back yard, but I do not want POE, because I do not have anyone to install it. What would you recommend to get for my backyard with audio, maybe with SD card and good weatherproof protection? What model is your solar powered outside light? I wanted to buy one, but it’s hard to decide without trying and see how it works. Thank you for your help.

Lol..ring has a motion detector that you can use and link your cameras to...so when the motion detector senses motion it can trigger your camera(s) to record and/or turn on the lights.

i really enjoy your videos and i was hoping you can do a video on the SENS8 outdoor camera. if you haven't heard about them this camera it basically has all the features as the Ring camera minus the monthly fee for recording video, all you need is either a google drive or dropbox account and you can store your videos no charge. The camera itself records in 1080p it has a 95 db+ alarm, 2 way audio, night vision, you set the proximity for your alarm just like with Ring, it has a 800 lumen light with lighting settings if you perfer, all with motion detection , waterproof and weatherproof. it appears the app runs smoothly but i would love your feeback after testing this device out as i was leaning towards forking the money over for 3 ring spotlight camers because my driveway space for a floodlight is too small from what i see but the sens8 or ring would fit . you can find the SENS8 on amazon for $119 which was the cheapest i could find after seeing that when released they were going for around $70 according to one site i stumbled across. So i hope you can do a video on this device because i really want to know what you think. Heres to a happy and safe new year to you, your family & friends & us subscribers.

Are you having to install the manufactures' app for each different brand name you're using, or do you have the ability to run and manage all of cameras with one universal or generic app???? I'm simply wondering this; if someone runs through, and then around your house, triggering every camera you own, do you have to open every app, or will you get a bunch of app notices from all of the different manufacturers; and would you have to toggle back and forth between the different apps to view footage caught on cameras from various manufactures???

Different apps. If one, 2 or more cameras are triggered. I know that there is definitely someone or something triggered it so I just open one camera and the other ones will still be recording in which I review later on.
