Switched to macOS since 2016. Tried windows last week. I forgot how user friendly windows is. I totally understand this man’s pain. Instead of stage manager, i would love to have a revamped finder.

I always used mac, to me windows is a nightmare, app crashes all the time, I do not know how to to exit from certain apps. With Mac you always have a short cut, command + q, the app closes. It really depends on what you are used to, I would not say that windows is more user friendly.

@@amosmattia I agree with you. I think it all depends on what you learned first. Your mind cements that this is the way things are done. Then when you use the other OS, it doesn't work that way and you get frustrated and think why did they do it this way. If you start using both for a long period of time, you start to learn all the nuances of each and things start to make sense. Both Windows and Mac OS have cool things that are either missing or are better implemented in the other. After using both extensively over a decade, I prefer the Mac OS way of doing things, but I completely understand if the opposite is true for others. The key thing to remember is if you are trying the opposite OS for the first time, it is completely normal to get frustrated. Give it more time and eventually it will be fine.

But with those ui/ux and software compatibility issues in macos, i need to be keep using a windows machine as my main workstation. Ps- the files and folder management in macos sucks 😂😂

I enjoy watching vids like this because it gives me some sort of happiness that I’m not the only person who goes crazy trying to navigate in MacOS. What’s hard is that our muscle memory for decades is built into Windows, so trying to change that is hard enough…but then Apple also does very weird things (that are almost just counter intuitive to Windows) and it becomes frustrating. For me, the absolute worst is the Apple File Manager. Everything about it drives me nuts. I think the Windows File Manager is 100x better! Just trying to navigate and find folders becomes such a beat down of a process that seems to take forever to find folders. Anyway, nice video and good luck! Lol

Just a few pointers as a long term Mac and windows user Command w closes the window, command q quits a programme, you can’t quit finder as it’s an integral part of Mac OS when you want to close a finder window you should use command + W For copying command c is copy, command v is paste, command option V is move (Mac equivalent of cut and paste in windows) Window arrangement is designed to work differently, multitasking is spread between windows with quick switch gestures available on your touch pad, expand every window to full screen and use three fingers swiping left and right to switch between open windows quickly. Also as you have multiple monitors when you drag an app to another monitor you can switch between windows on each monitor, treated as two separate desktops which is very useful when doing a lot of multi tasking. Dragging two fingers from the right side edge of the touch pad opens notification centre and pinching three fingers and your thumb opens launchpad (no need to try and open apps from finder) in fact gestures on your touchpad solves a lot of problems you have - well worth looking through all of these in system preferences. Scrolling left and right or up and down uses two fingers left and right or up and down.

Hello TheRg191, thank you for reply! Yes, now I see that I can close the finder with Command+W. Windows arrangement in MAC OS is completely different, than in WINDOWS OS. I switched to apple after being a windows user all my life. 1st let me say the Mac mini m1 is fast but I feel mac os is in the stone ages when it comes to arranging and resizing windows . Another issue is the inability of the Mac to lose focus from a text entry when selecting another window. My final complaint is with the hardware. You pay more for less their entry-level machines only have 8g of ram and 256GB of SSD. That's so 2005. They should have at least 16g and 512 on their entry-level machines. You have to pay almost twice as much for a Mac than for a comparable windows machine. I think my next purchase is going to be a pc again. It may not be as snappy but at least I can upgrade my memory and SSD without paying an arm and a leg.

You can use Command+W to close a finder window, but you can't quit the finder. The finder must run for the OS to function, similar to Windows Explorer, which is always running in the background. Command+W closes windows, Command+Q quits an application, and Command+H hides an application. The Command+Q should work on all apps except the finder.

Cmd+Q to simply close the application completely.. a longlife windows user here, and its just organic using the trackpad to be honest, sooooooo much intuitive than windows gestures.. whats really nice about macOS is that, basically you get free document processor right off the bat, pages, numbers and keynote equally for Microsoft counterpart that you have to pay subscription now.

9 months late but here are the possible solutions as of today For snapping to left and right, you can hover over green button with option pressed to show the "Move window to the left/right side of the screen" (to make it faster you can tie it to a keyboard shortcut in system settings. Double clicking safari resizes the page to the optimum ratio to show all content. Similarly, finder resizes to show maximum content for the page (for example, if there is a long list, it will vertically extend as much as possible to show maximum listings. If the files have long names, it will horizontally extend as far as possible to show full names. Depends on the finder window you are at). To cut paste, you copy (cmd + c) and "paste and delete" (cmd + opt + v) instead of just paste (cmd + v). Anything in the finder (file, folder, application) can be opened by 1. cmd + down arrow key or 2. cmd + o (enter is for renaming in finder). You need third party app for separate mouse and trackpad scrolling :(. cmd + w closes the window and cmd + q quits (kills) the app. Finder can't be killed since its like windows explorer and the entire OS runs on it. Finder windows can be closed using cmd + w tho. Transfer speeds can only be seen in terminal. Toggle between open windows of same app by cmd + ~.

By double click the title bar of a window in macOS, the system presents "the best size it thinks fit" for the content in that window. For example, if the finder is presenting a lot of files, and you have to scroll to find things, by double clicking the title bar, the window will become as large as possible to present all the content. Command-Q is actually “quit” so it will quit an application. The Finder is not actually an application, it’s sort of the main part of the operating system that you interact with. Command-W on the other hand, is “close window” and will close Finder windows. In applications that use multiple windows, command-W will also close the active window, but command-Q will quit the entire application.

First off, I appreciate what you are going through. I'm a Mac guy, and when I got a job that was Windows based, I went through the same thing. I know that you are experienced with Windows, but I have significantly more time on the Mac. Started with a Mac SE to be specific. I was using Apples OS in 1984, which the PC side struggled along with DOS, until Windows 95 (which mimicked the Apple OS). The biggest draw for the PC crowed was the games they wanted to run. Once you know how to run Mac OS you start to see the system. Some people tell me that this is what they did with the building of their computer. I really don't want something that I have to fix, change or alter to get what I want. I want to purchase a computer that does what it is supposed to. My selection is smaller with Apples products, but let me assure you that you would be hard pressed to get the performance of the M1 chip in any like priced PC. And if you unplug your DELL XPS from life support, you now have a real short life span of usability. I was really disappointed with the PC itself but I did learn that if you give it time and ask questions from the IT people, I got the hang of it. And not being a laptop guy, when Covid hit and I had to take a Dell laptop home, (Cost was about $1,700.00 Cdn.) I really got the shock of my life. The screen went dim when I unplugged it from Life Support, and the battery life was terrible. I had to contact IT and they told me why.

One thing I always tell people that are going to switch from Windows to Mac is you're inevitably going to also have to change the way you think about certain things and embrace the "macOS way" in order to get the most out of the experience. That window snapping feature you mention that you miss from Windows -- ugh, personally I am so glad that's not a native part of macOS. macOS embraces the concept that your computer desktop is like a literal desktop with many overlapping objects that you can quickly sift through to get to what you want. Unless you're in fullscreen mode for the purpose of concentrating on one particular task, your individual windows should generally only take up the minimal amount of space that you need them to take up. One advantage of this is, if you get in the habit of working in this way, you can easily access things (e.g. to drag something) on the actual desktop behind your open windows without having to minimise something. Or drag something from one window to another. I also hate the idea of my OS automatically (even if only when I tell it to) resizing a bunch of windows so they take up equal amounts of room filling the entirety of the screen (if you want that sometimes by the way, that's what split view in fullscreen mode is for). To me, sometimes app windows look funny if they are not of a particular aspect ratio but often they're not as practical too. Does the Finder window really need to be tall and skinny when I predominantly use it in "Column" view? Does Finder really need to take up my entire screen when it's mostly empty space anyway? Does Safari really need to be "full screen" when it is common practice for websites have a maximum width set on them? In this scenario you're just wasting part of your screen that could potentially be more practically used... such as bringing up a Finder window nearby that already has lined up that file you want to drag to upload to a website. See? It's just a different way of thinking and it takes time to adjust... :)

Generally speaking, the typical macOS user doesn't use Finder windows as their main method of exploring and opening apps. You certainly can but that's not what it's designed for. Finder is a file management app after all. As a macOS user of over 15 years (before then I was on Windows for about 10yrs), I love that I can quickly rename any file or folder by hitting enter. If instead that item opened when I hit enter, that would drive me crazy 😂 And just a small tip: hitting Cmd + O will open the selected file :)

And why does the return key work the way you expect in Launchpad and not in Finder? Because Launchpad isn't a file management app. It's sole purpose is for browsing and quickly opening apps, hence it makes sense for the return key to open an app in that scenario
@andrewsyd
@andrewsyd Жыл бұрын
Finder Shift + selection in grid view doesn't work the way you're expecting it to because in grid view, all the items are floating wherever you happen to place them. By default they are placed in a perfect grid but you can scatter them around in any which way you please. You can even have them overlap awkwardly and Finder doesn't care. This means the items literally have no relationship to each other and Finder has no knowledge of the "order" your eyes decide they are in (because they're just floating around, there is no order defined). So there is no "select all from 1 to 5" in this mode because there is no "1 to 5". Personally I don't use grid view very much, I prefer column view.

Holding Cmd + ` iterates through the open windows of the app which currently has focus. Literally one key above tab so you can easily move from switching between apps and windows within an app. Similar thing with quitting apps and closing windows. Cmd + Q quits the app but if you move the Q across by one key to W, it closes the window instead. Genius!

Double-clicking the top of an application can go full screen but then MacOS would have to learn from you to switch between your preferred sizes. So go full screen keep it that way for some time then shrink the screen and when next you double tap the top, it'll do what you want.

I can see in comments people giving solutions but most of them are not intuitive. For example moving windows to side to snap is intuitive but hovering on the maximize button and waiting options to show up and then move left or right is not. I got a Mac mini few months ago and returned cos the keyboard shortcuts are hardly present. For example in windows to maximize I do alt space (to get the context menu) and hit X that’s clearly underlined in Maximize option. In mac I googled and found command and M minimizes the windows but no shortcut to maximize unless you went to settings and create a shortcut to do that. Isn’t it logical to give a default shortcut for maximize when you give one for minimize. I was going to give another shot to mac with MacBook Pro but watching your video I may not do it.

I've been using Windows since I was about 3 or 4 years old and I'm 23 now. Started with Windows 98. I've used MacOS X Snow Leopard a little bit on an older iMac I got on the cheap and ran OS9 on SheepShaver but I hadn't used MacOS for anything but a single program until I got one of the M2 Macbooks. The interface was a little weird to get used to and it honestly felt almost completely foreign to me aside from the terminal due to my experience with GNU/Linux. After a few weeks I started loving the interface. I still use Windows and Linux on my main PC but now Windows feels even more clunky to me than it used to. Everything is super snappy and painless on MacOS compared to Windows. Even compiling programs that don't have fully supported ARM versions yet is easy. It really just feels like a more friendly, slightly different Linux to me now. One thing I do not like is the settings menu, though. So much digging but the search function helps out a lot. More GUI customization options would be nice, too. Love the menu bar, though. I'd love to have it on my Fedora install.The keyboard shortcuts are nice, too. Switching between typing languages is much less of a pain since I can just tap capslock.

Macs are more for people who don't know anything about computers they are ridiculously easy to use. When I switched to it I was able trace my steps in no time and everyone else from my home who borrowed my computer got to use it with relative ease without asking me for help on anything. It's just a matter of you being willing to open your mind to new operating systems. But anyways I approached Mac os the way I approached phones back then I could switch phones from different manufacturers and still know that there's some functionality that is similar across all of them but it's just a matter of finding where it's located. I used this same approach after using fl and going to studio one or any other daw.

First of all, thank you for this video. I switched 2009 to MacOS and I never will go back. What I need to say Window management: It comes out of the history of the system. Yes I agree, the snap function in Windows is a feature I wish to have in MacOS. I installed a freeware for this. It works for me, could be nicer, but does what it should. Basically Mac works best on the trackpad with gestures. The double click was invented round 1994 and in MacOs it minimized the window and set it back to its size set before. This is why it does not work the same way. Yes it is confusing, I got used to it. Basically understanding the window management was the biggest pain in the ass, Apples philosophy is simply different. Cut and Copy: Yes pain in the a**! I simply started using the shortcuts. Mouse: Yes the wheel works different, since I got used to this, I hate it, when it is the other way round in WIN. Going thru a document: I use the trackpad, works great Showing Speed: Why you need that? Shift and select: Works for me, no matter what view. Don't know what is wrong here. The Doc: It is not a Task Bar! It has a different philosophy you need to get used to it. It is hard when you come from WIN. That's it from me

I've used Windows since it first came out, Linux for almost 20 years and macOS since it switched to using a UNIX-based O/S. There are many great features that macOS has; however, you first have to unlearn many of the Windows habits that don't always make sense but we're simply used to using. Here are the answers to your questions: 1. Choosing windows to fit left and right of the screen: This is possible out of the box. Firstly, you need to understand that macOS uses the ‘Add a Desktop’ more heavily than Windows does and the action to split windows left and right will depend on whether you want the windows to stay on the current desktop or to take up a new desktop, i.e. their own full-screen together. All the options are built into the green window sizing button in the title bar. Hover or long-press on the green dot and select ‘Tile window to left (or right) of screen’ will send it to its own desktop and then ask which window should take up the second half. Instead of clicking, you can hold down the option key while hovering or long-pressing that will change the options to ‘Move window to the left (or right) of the screen’, which will keep the windows on the current desktop, which leaves the menu bar and dock visible. The green dot is your key to maximising windows. If you have already maximised a application window to its own desktop (let's call it window A), you can add an open window (let's call it window B) beside it by pushing up on the trackpad with 3 fingers (or 4 depending on your settings) to reveal all the desktops at the top of the screen and then drag window B up to the desktop where window A is to sit it alongside. 2. Double-clicking a title bar: Again, macOS provides more options for maximising windows than Windows and understanding these will explain what double-clicking the title bar does. Windows can restore, minimise and maximise but macOS can: a) restore to last-used size b) zoomed to as large as needed to fit current content, which means to try to expand and shrink vertically and horizontally enough to accommodate content and remove scrollbars c) maximise to full-screen on its own desktop d) tiled to full-screen to share a desktop with a second application e) moved to the left or right on the current desktop with menubar and dock visible. Double-clicking a titlebar simply toggles between zooming to accommodate the current content and restore to the last-used size. 3. Moving files between storage devices: macOS is a graphical user interface and has been designed for drag-and-drop rather than using an intermediary clipboard. The clipboard is used more for content, i.e. text and graphics, and it works across devices. For example, if you have text on your iPhone and select copy, you can then switch to your macOS device logged into the same iCloud account and select paste, if done within a quick timeframe. To copy or move files, open two windows and drag-and-drop. Drag-and-drop works on many more items than you would first expect when coming from a Windows background. You can drag and drop content from a web page to your desktop or a folder, you can open the Info box (i.e. file properties) and drag and drop its icon to the desktop or a folder, you can drag and drop a graphics file to the Info box of a file to change its icon, etc. It is a much more coherent experience across a range of activities than Windows. 4. Return key on a file in Finder: The Return key allows you to rename a file, same as F2 in Windows. What does F2 really mean? If you want to open a file or an application, open it with ⌘+O, where O stands for Open. 5. Mouse wheel goes backwards: The physical scrolling device is setup for the trackpad where the two-finger push up or two-finger pull down pushes the content up and pulls it down respectively. This is the opposite to a mouse, since the mouse isn’t designed to push or pull the content but rather the push or pull the scrollbar, which works in the opposite direction. When you pull a scrollbar down the window, the content scrolls up. You can change the direction of the current physical scrolling device in the System Settings, as you showed. Pushing or pulling content up or down the page is a different way of working than controlling scrollbars up or down and this was introduced when touchscreens first came out on the iPhone, iPad and glass trackpad on MacBooks. 6. Mouse wheel movement in any direction: With the trackpad, this isn’t necessary. The trackpad mimics touching the screen so you simply need to swipe your fingers in any direction to push the content around in any direction. 7. Closing windows and quitting applications: In Windows, when you close the last window, the application quits. This is not the case with macOS. When you close all of the windows in an application, you have not asked the application to quit so it doesn’t. Window closure is separate from application quitting and you have control over both. Closing a window is done via the ⌘ key with alphabetic letters, which are easier to remember than function key sequences. Just like cut, copy and paste are next to each other on the keyboard to look like scissors (⌘+X), copy (⌘+C) and, well, the next letter along (⌘+V), so too are closing a window (⌘+W) and quitting (⌘+Q). You can also hide all windows of an application with ⌘+H, which is not possible with Windows unless you minimise each window. If you have closed all windows of an application, the application will still be running and you can open a new window by selecting one from the Window menu. You generally wouldn't quit Finder, as it is your not only your file manager but also your desktop manager. If you quit it, it will restart so it can manage your desktop again. Finder is like Explorer.exe and you would only quit it in extreme circumstances using ⌘+⌥+Escape. Closing all the Finder windows, like any other application, will not quit Finder. 8. Can’t see transfer speed of files: True, macOS does not show you the speed. macOS is designed to remove clutter but it does show you what you need, which is the time remaining so you know how long you have to wait. What would understanding the speed do for you? 9. Grid view selection of files: Again, macOS is graphical so just drag a selection box over the contiguous files you want to select. Using shift-click in Windows also captures files contiguously so it effectively works the same. 10. Switching between windows of the same app: Like other command-key sequences, ⌘+Tab to switch between applications has a companion key sequence in close proximity to switch between windows of the same application, which is the Command key plus the key above Tab containing the backquote (⌘+`). This cycles through the windows of the application currently in focus and you can tell which has the focus because its name is always in the menubar. You can also toggle hiding and showing the dock with ⌘+⌥+D, for Dock.
