At Gettysburg on July 2, the fighting around Devil's Den rose to fever pitch as Blue and Gray struggled for supremacy of the rocky terrain strewn with massive boulders. As the assault by Texans of Maj. Gen. John B. Hood's Division reached its zenith, one man could be seen standing on top of a boulder firing his musket. Here's the story.

My great, great grandfather was in the 1st Texas Infantry Company I and was killed that day. I have no idea where he is buried. Thank you for this documentary.

I know you are proud of his service to Texas and to his country. Hoods Texas Brigade was always in the thick of it. Lee bragged on his Texans several times. God Bless the Texas Brigage.

. When Union troops broke through Southern lines in the Wilderness, GenLee sent His Texans into the fray, saying, " MY Texans always hold them. They will stand and fight all day."

My G-G-Grandfather, Private John Melton Bowen served in Co. K, 5th Texas (Bloody Fifth) Infantry which was at Gettysburg that day as reported by the narrator of this story. Private Bowen survived the Civil War and died at the age of 91 in 1924, the year my father was born in Wilcox County, Georgia. My G-G-Grandfather was in a Georgia unit attached to the 5th Texas Infantry as were other Confederate soldiers from other southern states who were not native Texans. G.M., BT3, USN; HSC, USCG, (Ret.).

My GGGrandfather enlisted in Dooly county Georgia. He was wounded at Petersburg, Va. and captured and sent to Hellmyra. I'm glad I wasn't around back then.

I first heard about "Will" Barbee from Matt Atkinson when he was giving a tour of that end of the battlefield. Apparently, no one knows what became of Barbee after that, whether he survived or died. According to Matt, he stood up on that rock shouting compliments ( "compliments, Texas style ) at the Yankees on their end of the Triangle Field. What could possess a man to do what he did? Maybe he was drunk. Maybe he was crazy. Or maybe he just really liked that horse.

The texas brigade suffered 597 casualties during this battle but that day the union army faced the fighting spirit of texas

I met a great grandson of a member of a Georgia brigand while I was at Devils Den recently. He told me that his great grandfather told him that to keep union soldiers from ransacking the gear and bodies of the dead, they put them between the large boulders. He said that many were possibly still there.

have y'all heard of the Texas boy who was sitting a bolder firing rifles loaded by the wounded bellow. It was said he got shot off that bolder 6 times and the last account of him was that he was laying on the ground crying because no one would put him back on the bolder.
