In my opinion the most difficult thing about compression is to really hear the difference and to hear wether it sounds better with or without it 🤔

I’m gonna use a vocal for example again.. haha. But one thing that clicked for me when I first started (that ahhh moment) with compression was when I had it on a vocal, and when I would bypass and enable the compressor, I could tell that the vocal would have words that got lost, when bypassed. Then when enabled those words were more upfront. What was happening was the compressor was decreasing the volume of the louder parts (making the quieter parts closer in comparison) keep the vocal upfront and not getting lost in the mix randomly. Hopefully that makes sense! Just the way I finally heard compression back then.

@@LifeStyleDidIt that's what I'm actually trying to do in a mix I'm doing, I've sidechained the snare to cut through the vocal first in the chain and then put a compressor after it to try keep consistency of the vocal but I need to learn more about the settings as there's loads of them on Fab filter c

hey dude, thanks for this. Taught me a lot in the last year of discovering your channel, its really appreciated. Any chance you could talk in another video about how to get out of your own way or something similar? I often find myself focusing far too often on technicalities these days and not really getting a lot of music done, always thinking "i need to know the next thing first" haha. I don’t really reach for compression for melodies on my own production, but that’s because when creating I am adjusting/playing velocities how I want them to be, if that makes sense. But let’s say I’m mixing a beat for a producer and the Wav file for the melodies is kind of everywhere and needs to be tamed, I’ll compress.
