Working with forest owners, foresters, pine straw harvesters, and potential customers like universities and colleges, NWF forestry program staff are developing new markets that will reward forest owners for restoring longleaf and managing it in ways that are compatible with wildlife.

If you didn't have a scummy pine only forest, you could have and sell hickory nuts, walnuts, black cherries, maple syrup, hickory syrup, chinquapin nuts, beech nuts, persimmons, and chestnuts.

A "scummy pine only forest" that once made up 96 million acres of the American south and boasted plant and animal diversity only rivaled by the Amazon rainforest. This comment is a perfect example of how ignorant US citizens are to this habitat loss that occurred right under our noses. So, no they can't sell chinquapin nuts (lol) but they can sell pine straw and help offset the cost of restoring the Longleaf to their little corner of the world. Also, on as little as 100 acres of Longleaf pine, the landowner could make as much as $100,000 per year selling straw, one product, better efficiency, less labor-intensive, less overhead.

@@sharpcreaseinmyjeans Chinquapin nuts are far more valuable than pine straw. I can't really think of a value of pine straw. Chinquapin nuts are not so valuable. You can only eat them. :P Animals can eat chinquapins too and pine forests have shitty plant diversity owing to the allelopathy of pines. Ozark hardwood forests have 500 tree species and 3,000 non-tree plant species. Also, chestnut wood is very high value. Hardwood trees do produce edible mast in the form of berries and nuts and they are the largest flowering plant species on earth. Flowers are not only fragrant and pretty, but they support pollinators like bees too. I had a yard with two beautiful eastern white pines and nothing grew under them even with constant needle removal. The soil was bare. This is because conifers are allelopathic. No! You're stupid fuck!

@@Jemalacane0 the species you listed had very little if any presence in the original 90 million plus acre longleaf ecosystem of the southern states. The point is to try and recreate that specific longleaf ecosystem that includes numerous plants and animals that exist only in that environment. Pine straw is just a by product that's marketable and can help off set cost to the owner.
