Liftmaster Garage Opener Doesn't Close

My 1996 Liftmaster 1/2 HP opens but doesn't close if the light is on. When the light goes out you can close it. You cannot stop its travel in either direction. It turned out to be a bad capacitor on the logic board. This video shows you how to repair it.

Thanks a lot Rich. I had the exact same problem. I didn't find this post until I realized it only happened after the light was switched off. I didn't have a bulb in it.

Thanks for the compliment. I hope the video was helpful and you could resolve your problem. My opener is still going strong but I had to replace the electric eyes on the door because they kept giving a false blocked door reading. Found replacements on Amazon and I'm good for another 25 years. 🙂

Thank you SO much for sharing this info! I've been trying to pin down why the door would open, but not close for my family, but seemed to work for me. Turns out it was because I'd wait more than 4 minutes (not planned) then go out and check it and it all worked. I NEVER would have figured out it was related to the light bulb. I removed the bulb and now it opens and closes. I have capacitors on order to fix it the right way.

Old caps leak! They can cause all kinds of problems. Since I was an Avionics Tech I troubleshot a 12-y/o Pioneer Stereo Amp I had bought when I was overseas in the Navy. I replaced every cap in it, all the cap back in 1994 cost be over $60.00. Way too many caps to count and various sizes. I had to triple check every one as I installed them. I hate to think if I would have cost if I had taken it to someone.

What's the part # for that capacitor and where did you order it from ?

Hi, BY. It doesn't have a part number, just a rating. This one is 35 volt, 330 uF (microfarad). I got a replacement on Amazon. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073YPZ8PL

Thanks for posting this. Mine wouldn’t work with any remotes just from the wall opener. Checked the cap and it was bad. Didn’t have one so I used a few connected parallel to get the correct uf to test it out. Works great. Thanks for posting this.
