I honestly don't understand how anyone can dislike this book. I thought it was an absolute masterpiece. The best book in the series since Golden Son. As a writer writing a novel in this genre which has received interest from a pretty decent agent... this book is the touchstone for me. After I read it, I had to rethink a lot of aspects of my book.

On goodreads under the 2 star reviews Angela and screaming bird the artist basically sum up why I didn't like the book that much. Darrow doesn't ACTUALLY face the consequences of his actions and PB doesn't really let non golds have agency or significant grievances that can't be solved by a cheesy speech or a quick heart to heart. Lysander chapters were great though.

I love Victra, but sometimes less is more. I loved the way she was written in this book. "Don't fear for me, pity them." .... F'ing badass. (Also... "I was making a challis for Sevro..." ) But yes... hoping to see more of her in Red God. Still, this one is hands down my favorite of the series. So many great moments... so much payoff from previous books! and of course.... "Clang! Clang! Clang!"

So goddamn good. The Battle of Phobos, Lysander being an interstellar punk ass, Darrow being DARROW, the fiery oratory of Apollonius, THE RIM, Obsidian Berserkers, breathtaking obliterations. Pierce is 🔥 af rn. So I read the hard copy and listened to the Tim Gerard Reynolds narration on Audible and the characters just exploded to life. I can hear The Minotaur stalking and taunting--like being hunted down by Homer's dark doppelganger. I will never forget the way Tim's Cassius says "Lysander", with that Queen's English accent, it adds a layer of deep richness to the story itself. So goddamn good. Diomedes, Ajax, Atlas, Sevro, CASSIUS. So goddamn good.

I think comparing Red Rising to First Law doesn't make much sense. First Law and pretty much all of Joe Abercrombie books are really cynical with moments of optimism. Pierce Brown books are almost the exact opposite they're incredibly optimistic where bad things occasionally happen. I wouldn't even say that there occasionally cynical because they're not it's just that bad things sometimes happens in his books.

I liked the book a lot and it has some of the best action sequences in the series, but I was a bit let down by how the plot and world were simplified or rushed up. The new aliens threats and concepts have turned into the same main villains and conflict from the original trilogy (even the wildcard macguffin hinted at is foreshadowing the end of Morning Star). Having more mini series such as the Sons of Ares to flesh out the expanded world could help. Sons of Ares was surprisingly good and the world breathes more when it’s done subject to the gravity of the force of nature of Darrow

As someone who has only listened to the audiobooks Lysander was only likeable when he had his own charismatic narrator. Maybe that was the intention with only using Tim in the 6th because I only wanted to get back to Darrow whenever it was his chapter. Lysander went from being interesting and potentially a good guy to definitely villain in my mind.

I finished it today. Was a hell of a book and I agree with you on everything pretty much. I also think that there were chapters that were cut especially with Lyria. Everyone wanted more Victra but I'm really content with more Cassius and Sevro in contrast to the previous book. I think we'll get plenty of her in the final book. ALSO I WANTED MORE APOLLONIUS BUT BLOODYAMN DOES HE REALLY SHINE ON THE TIME HE HAS. SPOILER ALERT I think that there were originally lyria chapters about the coronation and then working with athena and learning about the death. I'm kinda pissed because i really wanted to see more of those scenes. It's also clear he abandoned the whole figment plot (would be a great idea for a spinoff). As for the abomination i don't see how he could fit in the plot since he isn't on mars or the rim. I guess he could play a part in part 1, but we'll probably get more of him in the final book along with clown and pebble, it's clearly connected. Also we have no clue what happened to rhonna and Electra wasn't even mentioned.

As much as I love Tim Gerard Reynolds, I don't think making him the solo voice actor was the right choice honestly. If you ask me the original cast from Iron Gold shouldn't have even changed. Lyria might've been annoying to listen to at times but it actually fit and sounded like a Red girl, Lysander sounded like an entitled Palatine brat. The only difference I would've made is used Moira Quirk, who replaced Lyria's VA, as Mustang. Other than that, I think they should've stuck with the cast the whole way through.

Red god should be 1000 pages and I would be fine not seeing Lysander once , fu*k him , he doesn't deserve a death, I hope he will get Prometheus treatment

This is probably the worst book of the series for me along with the first. There were too many characters who did complete 180s from their previous attitudes and instantly forgave past crimes etc Without going into spoilers, a bunch of important plotlines from the previous books were also dropped as well. This book felt more like filler fan service to me ngl. The best parts of the book was the starting battle on Phobos with Virginia's POV. All the other parts, especially the characters of Ajax, Atalantia, Atlas and Gaia felt completely off and rushed. Not to mention the glaringly obvious death flags before the character deaths so it didn't have any impact at all. I didn't hate this book but it was just meh.

Iron gold actually became worse for me after reading this book. The strength of iron gold was the way it established the complexities of the Republic and the world overall. Dark age expanded on that but dropped the ball a few times. Lightbringer just throws all that complexity and build up out the window. My main gripes are the groan worty expansion pack worldbuilding, the lack of meaningful consequences and the fact that PB hates agency. No one is allowed to have a meaningful grievance towards Darrow without being wrong, manipulated or easily fixable with a few words. Lysander's chapters were amazing though and I love Cassius.

@@Alexander-tu3iv I've come to the realisation that PB is just terrible at characterisation and outlining their progress. His strengths lie in his action setups, the space battles, planetary invasions, duels etc are the only thing I'm reading this series for at this point.

Part I of the book was the weakest for me. My biggest issue were certain plot lines from DA disappearing. Also the dialogue specifically in Part I was clunky. I wish moments didn’t happen off screen too. Particularly for the events leading to the Confess scene. Parts 3 and 4 were definitely the strongest portions of the book. The redeeming things about this book were the character interactions, reunions and villains. In terms of ranking I don’t know where I’d put this book. I feel like it was a decline from Dark Age. It’s at the bottom of list at the moment. I’ll re read it to sort out my feelings.

That’s where you essentially lost me. Just cause I don’t like red rising and the hype around it, some idiots decided to attack me on your goodreads…

@@mikesbookreviews not necessarily true. As a page creator you could delete comments you don’t want to have on it. That’s regarding that. Your channel as all the other channels, I agree with some things and not agree with other things. I mean I’d wish other series would get a prominent mentions and videos too, but it’s not my Channel to do so. You and I share some opinions on some fantasy and horror books. But what saddens me in a way, is knowing that when I’ll open my own channel, I most likely won’t receive collaboration video requests due to differences

Weird comment. Mike doesn’t send hordes of people after anyone with a different opinion. He can’t control other people being dicks and he certainly doesn’t advocate it.

@@philippburnett6045 okay, well what did you say in the first place to prompt those comments? Did you respond to Mike’s Red Rising content with something to the effect of “I don’t like red rising”? Because that is a “no one asked” kind of scenario and unfortunately asking for trouble. Sorry it happened, regardless, but you have to be realistic about these things.

It’s not the penultimate book of the series. Change the title at least.

It’s book 6 of 7. Last I checked the definition of penultimate is next to last. How does this not fit the bill?
