Here's a basic intro on incident metering with the Sekonic L-758.
There have been some comments regarding where to point the lumisphere for readings. Some (including Seknoic) specify that readings should be taken while pointing the lumisphere TOWARDS camera rather than towards the light. This method can be used if you're looking to achieve proper exposure, but many times I am not looking to achieve proper exposure. Pointing the meter towards the camera essentially gives you an average reading of all sources surrounding the dome- giving you an F-stop to properly expose (not to mention it disregards any sources behind the meter).
Everything I light has some degree of contrast ratio, which is why I point my meter towards the source. I need to precisely quantify output from MULTIPLE sources, not just an average reading.

Definitely my favorite underground film channel. I’m definitely in the market for a light meter. My team and I will be marketing out for commercial gigs. I love the cinematography breakdowns and how you deliver the knowledge of lighting. A lot of people have expensive cameras and lenses but don’t know how to light or grade. I don’t want to be like them, all of your work is cinema grade quality. My biggest takeaways were learning about making a creative decision and not letting the numbers from the meter dictate what you do on set. I’ve also learned more terminology and science behind lighting when you started diving into F stops. For example 2:1 ratio the key is brighter than the fill. Lastly, I enjoyed the spot meter section. This was awesome because i learned how spot meters help cameras stay within the middle grey range. I also learned how it keeps a subject in frame within the dynamic range of the camera you’re using. I’ve used your methods on gigs that I’ve had in the past. My work has improved dramatically. Thank you so much!

Did you calibrate your meter to your Camera? Or is it enough to work with exposure compensation to place the middle gray on the desired IRE spot for a certain cam?

What type of fabric are you using on the 8x8? Is it Muslin? Duvetyne? I know there are different types of fabric and yours looks very dark/black in the output. It isn’t illuminating light as a nylon/silk piece would or can do. I don't see spilling reflective light from your key light source or any light of that matter. Would love to also know what your camera settings were here...white balance? I see the ND specs attached...what type of ND? You have a favorite style/brand? What’s the glass? Focal length?

Yes, it would actually be more accurate than F-stops since they account for transmission.

maybe my question is silly: you were measuring the light, but why you needed a model there? the skin tone of a model could be white or black, which doesnt effect the reading of the meter, so how could you decide correct EV on a model by the light meter? thanks guys

Here's a seemingly basic question.... why do you choose to shoot at the native ISO of a camera? I understand cinema cameras are a little different in that they often only have a few gain settings, but you mentioned in the last video that the A7Riii has a native ISO of 800. Just curious.
@denoise_
@denoise_ 5 жыл бұрын
Not an expert here, but native ISO setting gives you the best dynamic range that the camera is capable of capturing.

If you have a full frame camera which lets in more light than an mft camera how come the settings would be the same? What I’m trufggling with is that is you set ISO to 100 and shutter speed to 1/50 and it said f stop 2.8 to get perfect exposure then sure on a camera with a smaller sensors you would need more light ? Excuse me ignorance I’m trying to get how this all relates to varies cameras with varies sensor sensitivity
@renatocustodio1000
@renatocustodio1000 5 жыл бұрын
The bigger sensor would allow a higher ISO number without too much noise
@EJNakamura
@EJNakamura 4 жыл бұрын
Don’t forget the lens as well...i.e a MFT lens on a MFT would let in the same amount of light as a FF lens on a FF camera. At least that’s the way I understood it. Changes would come if you introduce focal reducers as they would concentrate the light on to a sensor giving you an extra stop in light. Let me know if I’m wrong guys. Good stuff Machado

it simulates the camera, you put in the same setting (iso, shutter speed) you use in your camera, and it figures f-stop.

Not really. An incident meter is more accurate but your camera's light meter - which is a reflective metering system - is much more convenient, especially for typical shooting. Your camera's light meter doesn't really help you with flash photography in a studio, though. I'm not saying for most things a meter is necessary but they're great in some applications.

With all the respect...reflective light metering require one light measurement at a time. Covering with hands won’t help to spilling other light sources. I would recommend to stick to what you see, not the numbers. You’d spend all day in a studio trying to work out mathematics. It is like cooking, how much salt etc all depends of your taste. This is Art not science! Keep it simple , keep it clean. IMO !
