Thank you Tom for making this video! I missed your live stream as I was making a video. This latest vid of mine was actually inspired by your special effects vids! I hope to finish the fcpx work in a few hours though. I would probably just pm you the link as I really appreciate your work & included you in the credits! I feel awkward putting the ink in this post. :)

The Lumu light meter seems interesting, but flimsy. And my last light meter (one of the cheaper seconics) gave up due to water and condensation. How durable are these things?

Would you still mess around with ND filters if you are shooting ProRes RAW and can fine tune in Post? It’s sounds to me like - if you just keep things within the range of the camera’s chip and shoot RAW (and keep the light sources consistent) - You should able to fix everything - except composition - in edit.

Have you tried the Luminati yet? Has a pretty cool app and seems a little more accurate. I have both the Luminati, the Lumu and just got the 758. Lumu claims their limitations with natural light outside.

Hi sir, thank you for such an informative video. I am wondering if I am shooting in a log picture profile ( for example v-log on the Gh5), and if the light meter reads f4, and I want to achieve a "natural" exposure, do I set my aperture at f2.8? ( since I normally expose v-log one stop above).
@TomAntos
@TomAntos 3 жыл бұрын
No don't do that. Whatever the light meter reads you can use since it just shows you the actual value for proper exposure. Once you put those settings in your camera and then look at the built in light meter reading in your camera it will say its already overexposed.

Are light meters calibrated in F stops or T stops? F stops are supposed to be inaccurate for lighting right?
@TomAntos
@TomAntos 6 жыл бұрын
Its in F-Stops... no difference on the light meter side. If your light meter shows you should set your f-stop to F5.6 but you have a cinema lens that is measured in T-Stops then you still set the it to T5.6 stops on your lens. Yes the T-Stops are more accurate when it comes to lenses. Difference is this. On a lens that has it's markings in f-stops these represent the calculate amount of light that passes through the lens. Based on the lens build etc it's how the manufacturer measure the estimated amount of light will be once it passes through all the glass elements. In general it's cheaper to produce these lenses since they're mass produced without checking each lens. Cinema lenses that have T-Stops are actually measured (not calculated) amount of light that passes through the lens. So a well produced cinema lens will each be measured at the factory to make sure that there is exactly f5.6 amount of light coming out of the back end of the lens once it passes through all the glass elements. If it's not that lens is then send it to be adjusted and some glass elements to be replaced to make sure it is exactly that amount. That is also why cinema lenses are more expensive. Just simply means that lenses with T-Stops have been each measured to make sure they are accurate... lenses with F-Stops are just calculated but vary. That's only when it comes to lenses that you will see these two standards. That's why light meters only show F-Stop. You could just call it T-Stops on the light meter.

So with the Ursa recommended ISO being 800, does that mean you will not get better quality shooting a something lower then 800ISO or does that mean anything above 800 is not the best. I though the lower the iso usually would be better, is that not the case with Cinema Cameras?
@TomAntos
@TomAntos 6 жыл бұрын
raztechstudios lower ISO means less noise. But if you go below the native ISO it won't reduce the noise it just makes it darker and harder to see that's why it might seem like there is less noise. Ideally you want to always shoot in native ISO. What that is in each camera you have to find out since they all vary

Tom Antos thanks Btw i want to be a filmmaker but I'm mostly a self taught editor (my main program is powerdirector 12) but one thing i have trouble is camera quality which i mean In some movies they have the high quality look but at random points it might become sort of tv movie style (you can see it like in charmed,baywatch and so on) but how do filmmakers do that tv movie qulity and why dose it happen on some shows even when they have a good camera?

ok so you re telling us you d keep thesame iso all along, the same shutter speed at 180 degrees, and now you re using that thing to tell you for each set up what would your aperture. in other words whoever is the dp, whatever set up you have the film would look exactly the same, so why would we need a dp to begin with? the point is again maybe you know to write without mistyping that doesnt make a writer out of you, so again what is the real use of these light metres?
@tobiejirele3309
@tobiejirele3309 5 жыл бұрын
just because the light meter has given you a reading to adjust an aputure to a certain f stop (for middle grey exposure) doesnt mean the DP has to do it. it depends on what you are going for you can decide to go over or under depending on the scene you are shooting and the mood you want. and he explained how its also used for contrast ratios. ita juat to tool to help make a creative decision based on the information that you have and it helps.
