In this video I review paintings by the incredible Ali Cavanaugh.
She paints what's called fresco watercolors on boards and similar surfaces (kaolin clay surfaces if I'm not mistaken).

Hey! So glad you've covered Ali. This is where two worlds collide with you doing this video - love it. Anyway, I've been part of Ali's "Aligator" community by being with her over on Patreon for a few years now. We are a pretty productive, tight-knit group, international and of all different abilities. Quite a lot of our group are actually professional themselves yet still stay with the group for the support and knowledge we get from each other and Ali herself. We win awards and have our own exhibitions etc, so much creative inspiration. The surface we work on is either Aquaboard, Clayboard or a homemade version of that (with a bit more tooth I guess) which is watercolour ground on masonite (you can even use house paint) which we sand down to our preferred "tooth". It's quite unlike paper so you have to play round to get used to it. It's much more forgiving than paper and you can pretty much rub any area you want away if you make a mistake. It has less "absorption" than regular watercolour paper and so we can create those beautiful blooms and we can also do many more layers on this surface. I still work on paper for some subjects (manly flora) but my preferred surface is definitely masonite (which I get cut to size at the local hardware store) with Daniel Smith Watercolour Ground. Hope that helps for anybody thinking of giving it a go - Beverley, Australia 😊

A simple tip from David Leffel (oil painter, but tip is good for any medium): brush yellow or orange into/over any shadow if u would like it to appear more transparent. Works like a champ, a real game changer. Especially when u paint a shadow & then feel it looks to heavy like an iron door instead of space that u can see into. Im a watercolorist who has studied artists of all mediums, so trust me when I say that this does work in WC. If u r concerned about the dark shadow turning green lean more orange than yellow. If its a brown shadow that is already warm such as burnt umber, go for the straight yellow. Happy painting! 🎨

@@LironYan Awesome!! I hope u enjoy the results. While I have ur ear, is that a portrait of Nicolas Lopez behind u on the shelf in the shot?? If so, did u paint this?? Its really good. U turned me on to Mr. Lopez & other watercolor painters within ur content, so thank u & please, keep pushing ahead with painting, the channel, & any other goals u may have. U seem to b a generous person who loves art for all of the right reasons. U deserve much success.

@@friedricengravy6646 Thank you so much! 😊 That's actually Russ the rapper (: Not Nicolas Lopez, though painting him in HIS OWN style sounds like a fantastic idea haha! Keep up the great work 🎨💪😁

Oh wow, her art is stunning! The hyperrealistic one messes with my head, I can't wrap my mind around that level of skill. The amount of time and energy it must have taken to achieve that... The watercolor pieces are absolutely gorgeous too, they really look quite magical. I love the realism of the "base" style combined with the less realistic color choices - there's so much color in all the paintings, even though they're very realistic and very light at the same time. Not a rainbow explosion, but a little bit like the very light rainbow you can get when light passes through a prism. Lovely.

I agree with you about her previous realistic style, I admire the technical ability of being able to achieve it, but from the viewers point of view, I may as well be looking at a photo. The watercolours you show us here are awesome. Very imaginative mixed with an area of realism, gives the viewer lots to look at and enjoy without that feeling that you’ve seen all there is to see after one view.

Ali has a wonderful coffee table book out that describes her technique. It has more in common with painting on plaster than painting on watercolor paper. Thats how she gets those lovely lose layers like silk scarves one on top of the other. Its those beautiful ephemeral works that I resonate with the most in her book. The really tight watercolors she paints are technically perfect but not as interesting in my humble opinion.

Could you do video on someone who is stressed becauseof having multiple art interests like watercolour, acrylics pastels, oils...clay sculpture .how could such people try to know which medium is really for them....so that they could focus on one medium . This person is me. I'm unable to manage with my job and so many art interests. Please don't say diplomatically it's ok to have so many interests. I'm not being selfish...but I'm sure many feel the same like me...maybe it's a time management video?🤔
