@@magnumdopest9161 Just speculation, but he'll probably play (and factor into the story) a lot more like Eivor did where they are more Assassin-affiliated than actual assassins and thus are a lot more oriented towards direct combat. As far as overall, it seems possible it will be very similar to Syndicate where Jacob Frye was better at open combat and Evie Frye was better at stealth, and you could switch between the two, but with Yasuke and Naoe instead of the Fryes.

Yeah that was the issue I had with it. I understand the logic they took to get there, but it is certainly odd for them to use a real person as the protagonist. From what I understand, they wanted to tell a story of people in Japanese society who had been excluded then basically becoming empowered by operating in the shadows. While Yasuke is *technically* a real person, almost nothing is known about him as a fact, and I guess they figured it would be too coincidental to have Yasuke at the same time as a black protagonist, but figured it would be problematic to ignore Yasuke, so they just made Yasuke the protagonist. And figured it was fine since all modern historians can say for sure is that he was black, lived in Japan, and worked for Nobunaga. Personally, I think they would've been fine with just Naoe, *especially* since the last two games where they tried to have a female protagonist (Odyssey and Valhalla with Kassandra and Eivor Varinsdottir) were both forced to have a male option by Ubisoft execs - who have since been removed, so they aren't really an issue. Plus it solves the gameplay issue of having another non-stealth-oriented character in what is at least theoretically a stealth franchise. But it seems like using Yasuke was needed for the story they wanted to tell, so here's hoping they don't mess it up.

Real life but so little documentation it gives the writers free rein to play with the premise of an outsider to Japanese culture as an assassin.

I can only find one instance of him being in battle, and he fought until a retainer of the enemy came to him and asked him to give up his sword. This was after fighting for some time, if you believe the written account of that day.

I’m not an expert, but I doubt that the black samurai trope stems from Yasuke. Anime, martial arts, and similar stuff has been a part of the black community for years; just look at the Wu-Tang Clan, The Boondocks, King Geedorah, or even how Piccolo from Dragonball has been widely accepted as black. Japanese and adjacent cultures have been a prominent part of the black community for quite some time now, so it wouldn’t exactly be far-fetched to think that black people would start depicting themselves as samurai’s eventually. So, in media, I would imagine that it is a modern invention but it still is interesting to know that a real black samurai did actually exist at one point.

People, especially the Japanese, fuckin’ love Yasuke, or at least the Idea of him. Especially when no matter what, Yasuke was gonna show up anyway because. You know. The story takes place during the Sengoku period. Y’all are looking into it too hard.

Edward wasn’t meant to represent the Caribbean, per say, he was meant to represent piracy in that era. Even then, the DLC (Which some consider it’s own game) has you playing as his first mate, Adewale, a former black slave from the Caribbean. The only real exception is Revelations, which takes place in Constantinople. You play as an Italian man, Ezio, in that games but what you should know is that Ezio was pretty much the favorite child having the most game out of any protag. Even then, however, his outfit was change to reflect the culture of the area. I’m also pretty sure that the location is meant to be symbolic in a sort of way. Storywise, Revelations is about the current protagonist at the time, Ezio, uncovering secret, or “Revelations”, of the first game’s protagonist, Altair. Ezio’s games take place mostly in Italy/Rome and Altair’s game takes place in the Middle-East. If you look on a map, you’ll actually see that Istanbul, Constantinople is actually right in the middle of those two general areas. So I’m pretty sure the location was chosen as a one-off to represent the sort of meeting of these two protagonists. Either way, Revelations is a pretty old game by this point so it shouldn’t really reflect modern practices. Also, I wouldn’t say that every protagonist is the same race as where their game takes place, just that they’re often created to represent the culture and history of their respective games. I think that’s the main reason why people are mad about Yasuke, people just don’t consider him a good representation of feudal Japan.
