Join us as we give a Colt Lightning rifle the ultimate feeding test by slam firing. We'll then show the fail-safe mechanisms in place that let us slam fire without fear of an out of battery discharge.

Wow, what an interesting video! I certainly did enjoy it very much. I do not have an original Colt Lightning, I have the Taurus Firearms copy called the Thunderbolt (due I assume to patent concerns). I have heard it is a very close copy of the original and from the parts breakdown diagram, it has all the parts you just detailed in your video. I love my copy despite it being a copy and Taurus has no shortage of people disliking the rifle on KZfaq. I have not had a problem with mine and it has been my go to rifle for cowboy action shooting for the last 5 or 6 years. At first, some of the guys were sort of waiting for me to have a problem with it, but that never happened and it runs just fine. I can shoot it much faster and more accurately than my 1873 Winchester replica because of the short stroke of my pump hand and less movement of the rifle. Mine unfortunately is in .45 Colt which is not historically accurate, however it is fun just the same. I will not use a short stroke kit in my 1873 Winchester because the 19th century cowboys had no such advantage available for their 1873s'. I do not begrudge however, the other shooters using them, because we are all having fun.

Great video on a favorite rifle. If identical twins bought rifles in 1890, one a 73, the other a lightning, both in 44-40 and both did the exact amount of shooting, which design would you expect to give up first? Thanks Mark.
@thecinnabar8442

Great question! Neither were a particularly rugged design. The race likely be between the '73 broken toggle link and those dainty arms on the back of the Lightning's magazine gate. I hate to say it, but the Marlins and Whitney Kennedy's lever actions of the time were probably more rugged than either of them.

It look like to me that may have been a 44-40 but I don't remember you saying what caliber it was. Anyway I have a Stevens Carnival type rifle 22 caliber, I can't remember what you call those types of rifles but they was used in the carnival. Anyway mine will shoot that fast also except that my spent shells go out the back and not out the top and every once in a while one will jam and not eject and I have to pull it out by hand and then continued but when it's working right you can rapid fire that little thing also and man are they fun to shoot. Thanks for the video and always remember to keep ye powder dry! PS I went through the transcript and didn't see where you said what caliber it was and I don't remember you saying it when you showed it the first time so maybe you'll let me know of course it doesn't really matter because I don't have one and I won't be shooting one. Is your recording microphone muffling the weapon's reports? If so, it would be one reason for me to NOT watch your videos...why watch shooting sports if there are no authentic reports? A slamfire is when the gun fires when the bolt slams home. It can be a malfunction, such as a firing pin stuck forward, or intended, such as this. On the more modern guns, they have a disconnect so you can slam the bolt shut with the trigger pressed and it won't fire. Let up on the trigger and you will hear a click. Now the gun will fire. If a modern gun will slamfire, it is a malfunction.
