In this video I go over the gear I use for a sub-13 pound base weight. No food, fuel, water (i.e. the consumables), just the gear that is on my back. This is good for three season backpacking. Warm, comfortable, and not making any sacrifices in my opinion. Click the link to my LighterPack below for a full breakdown, and links to almost all the items. Cheers!

Nice video! Sometimes the what’s in my pack videos are so chaotic or overly in the weeds detailed. This was the perfect middle ground. Glad KZfaq pointed me your way. Subscribed!

Thank you!! Under 14 lbs is my goal BASE weight for backpacking backpack - thinking max up to 5 days worth of food, water, fuel - so up to about 28 lbs. total max when the most stocked up on food, water, fuel. 👍New to it all and enjoying learning bit by bit like what gear to thoughtfully get. 👍Also my everyday carry aka daypack aka crossbody or mini-backpack goal weight is under about 14 lbs total (base weight under about 11.2 lbs + thinking 1 days' worth of food, water, and maybe skip the fuel) and with a certain level of preparedness but not as prepared as the 28 lb. backpack.🏕 Planning to try out vehicle and tent (and hammock?!) camping again too, and keep thinking, "Hmm, which gear can double for both packs + vehicle?"🤔 Though with some added luxury in the vehicle, like I sure love my Instant Pot, refrigeration, and freezers! 🍲Channels such as yours are extremely helpful. Safe travels to you and your girlfriend!

I put some duct take on my poop shovel to help with the sides and it is good to have a few pieces of duct tape.

That’s a good idea! I’ve got a little wrapped around my trekking pole, but I like the idea of putting some around the hand of the trowel.

Nice gear list, very close to what I carry in items and base weight. I'm starting to rethink my women's size NeoAir Xlite at 12 oz. Not all that comfy! And I need a better pillow and yours looks really good. I have that rain jacket and don't trust it, so I'll be changing to probably a myog silnylon "mountain poncho". I'm now going over to your video on the bidet to see if it's convincing....

In Scottish Gaelic, where the word Cnoc originates from meaning hill or knoll, the 'n' is always an R sound when following a C. So it's pronounced Croc

Nice review of your gear and how you pack everything. You definitely aren't skimping. Do you keep a Loksak or some kind of odor proof bag and some cordage for a good bear/critter hang? Just curious.
@justinhitsthetrail5225
@justinhitsthetrail5225 Жыл бұрын
I’ll be honest I usually don’t bring a smell proof bag or slickline. Most of my backpacking is in Arizona where I’m generally not concerned about bears. I do have some opsacks and an ursack if I’m going to a more bear dense area, and a bv500 if a bear can is required.

I absolutely love a Loksak - not as a bear bag but for the first night or so when wine or whisky won't fit in the bear can yet. I cheat with that to try to be safe at night. During the day it's in a side pocket with the days food and trash so my pack doesn't smell like food. As well I've up'd my game of leave no trace to include toilet paper. Into a dog bag then into the small stink proof before going into the days food storage. How good are they? If your familiar with the Mt. Whitney poop shenanigan's - I had someone else carry my poop on the mountain just so they could put theres in the bag to get away from there own smell. That good Sh&t.

@@nedanother9382 that is some impressive sh**! I wouldn’t carry someone else’s haha. For the last couple of years I’ve been using a bidet. If there are some decent leaves around then there’s zero tp required!

Great video! You look like you're in AZ. I just got done backpacking around the mogollon rim. My base weight was considerably heavier and trying to figure out how to get it down. Do you ever go with any groups?

That’s correct! I just shove it to the bottom. The pack is waterproof, or at least extremely water resistant.

Base weight is how much your loaded pack weighs, minus “consumables,” such as food, water and fuel.
@nedanother9382
@nedanother9382 Жыл бұрын
I say this with love. I want to start the push for a total abolishment of the words "base weight". It means nothing. It reflects and indicates only one thing (IMO)...to hide the actual weight you carry. You will have food, gas, water, and trash that is unconsumed on every trip. What does it matter what your weight would have been before you blew it up with food. It only matters what it weighs when you take the first step. Does anyone realistically walk around without water? If its content thats important then theres an untapped genre where the dash is ....between the myth of 13lbs and the reality on your back. Pease all

Say you take 4 trips with the exact gear and the only variable that changes are the consumables you mentioned... woah base weight lol

I think base weight makes sense when you are trying to methodically lighten your pack. I think about my base weight a lot (I.e. the things I can lighten). Here is a hard lesson I got with base weight, I would not buy a backpack based on my desired base weight. Once you start to put food and water into a pack, the “need a frame” threshold becomes a super important consideration.
