This is my current ultra lightweight and cheap setup for operating HF ham radio out of a backpack or rucksack. I typically use digital modes like JS8, FLDIGI, and Winlink but this will also operate CW and Phone (Voice) on 80m, 60m, 40m, 30m, and 20m. Full amateur radio station setup for a budget friendly total price of around $400 including the tablet.
Inspired by @OH8STN with a shift towards NVIS antenna simplicity.
I will follow up with a more detailed video on the antenna. subscribe so you don't miss it.

I have never been a QRP guy, usually big antennas and a lot of power. However, with my job I move and live in other peoples houses and it is hard for me to have a good ham radio station. Watching a lot of videos I have got interested in QRP. I bought a G-90 and I have had a lot of fun with it. Now I am searching for a good QRP radio to be even more portable. I think this video might have me convinced to buy one.

Very nice setup. My kit is almost identical, but a bit larger and heavier, as that's always the trade-off. I do it as a 2 bag kit, a minimalist bag, and a companion bag that contains the extra stuff. I thought about the various scenarios I might find myself in and set up the bags to fit them. I use an old tablet PC, and added 2 more HT's, a Baofeng, and also a TYT that can be set up for cross-band repeating. The idea being that I may need to communicate with someone who is going out and about from my location who didn't have an HT of their own. So I have the versatility and extra battery capacity of a total of 3 HT's, or 2 HT's and the TYT repeater at some high point or at a halfway point a few miles out. The other things I added were a second (tr)uSDX, (and antenna,) one that covers the Classic bands. In addition to being a backup rig, or second site HF radio it gives me more (but partly overlapping) band coverage. The (tr)uSDX kits are so cheap, tiny, and light, why not pack a second one? I also added one of those $17 eBay HF amps that's good for about 45 W for a few more dB if its output power becomes more important than its current draw. I used a very small heatsink because of their size and weight, but I would just have to keep the duty cycle down. I wouldn't be chatting away all day, anyway. I also included a small but decent CW key. Finally, I included a tiny cordless soldering repair kit with the absolute minimum of tools in order to do minor repair and to build antennas from whatever is handy. Those things of course add to the size and weight, but they greatly increase adaptability to any situation, and are still reasonable to carry as part of a backpack survival load, especially if one assumes that others may be around to share the load at some point. I'd urge others to consider the idea of a 2-bag kit like mine to see if it suits them as well..

Great video. I'm surprised you can operate a computer with such a minimal choke on the coax. I've found the RFI from these end-fed antennas can be terrible, causing all sorts of problems for the computer.
@BucktailResearch
@BucktailResearch Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. On some of my setups I have to choke every cable multiple times. This one seems to be pretty reasonable for sure. The USB power cable is choked, the digirig cables are choked from the factory, and the coax has several turns through that ferrite. Must be just enough.

I guess "cheap" is relative. The (tr)usdx is a phenomenal little transceiver for about $144, but when you have to add a $400 Windows computer, calling it inexpensive is a stretch. I sure wish we could see a solution using the Android platform as it would reduce size, weight, and cost significantly.

Fabulous! I LOVE your kit! I am particularly interested in the chalk line winder and the little MPPT charger. Got any links for those? Sort of guessing the winder might be 3d printed. Or maybe Amazon item # B01DP32GBE? I have a similar setup. I do all the power off a USB PD power bank. You can charge Surface AND do data from a single USB-C PD cable via a USB hub with PD passthru. Surface can actually charge faster via USB-C. And most foldable solar panels are designed to charge USB power banks. You can also charge other stuff like USB rechargeable head lamps, etc. I use a tiny $1 boost converter to raise the USB 5V to 13.8 the trusdx. This is only possible because of the low current of trusdx. My plan is to semi-permanently velcro and zip tie it all together on a stiff plastic sheet inside a molle IFAK pouch. This way the wiring mess is consolidated and only the USB cable, coax cable and antenna system have to come out.
@BucktailResearch
@BucktailResearch Жыл бұрын
Love it! Also will be securing everything to a panel or enclosure of some sort for the same reason. I did order the chalk line winder on amazon. Don't recall the item number at the moment, but it is the 4 hole one. I have also used various other plastic chalk line winders in the past with decent results, although they have less fine tuning due to only a single position to place the handle. The little charger came with my solar panel which I have had for a while, so I would have to dig that info up as well.

Tying knots in the antenna wire is worth the price of admission to your video. Keep up the good work. Even though I like running QRP, I operate a FT-857D because the solar cycle isn't always at the top and I prefer SSB phone. I've threatened on adding Bluetooth CAT to my radio so I can use FLDIGI from my phone without acoustically coupling. I do have a Digirig for portable for JS8Call and Winlink from my gargantuan Dell laptop, but I don't carry the laptop too often. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pLmYd7ydv62vnJc.html

Why can't you do CAT control through the Digirig? Wouldn't that clean up your PC to radio wiring? I think that is how you would do it between a computer and a Xiegu G-90.
