Range gear: masonoutdoors.com
Leather gear: www.masonleath...
All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballi... that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7-10’ from the shooting bench, depending on the cartridge and muzzle blast.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 10’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

I have a 300 AAC upper that I bought to hunt with. I saw your video (and several others) of the Federal Fusion 150 grain gel tests and that is what I went with. My choice of using a 300 AAC is related to health. I recently started on blood thinners and the 30-06 just bruises my shoulder to much now. The lighter recoil of the 300 AAC, coupled with the further reduction of recoil on the AR platform, and short range hunting, it just made sense for me.🤷‍♂ Thanks for all the 300 Blk testing👍

Soo the best hunting ammo I've found for the 300blk is barnes 110gr tac-tx. It has a very low minimum expansion velocity, it's accurate and it works every time. I've taken multiple deer with it including two with one bullet. Both died 15 yards apart. Expensive but worth it.

Another great review and video. All of my hunting friends who shoot 300 Blackout follow a "100 yds or less" protocol shooting 135 to 150 gr bullets. They all agree if the target is within 100 yards the 300 Blackout is an exceptionally effective caliber for small to medium size game.

Great video. 300 BO is a lot less powerful than a .30-30 when comparing ballistics, energy, speed, trajectory, and performance using the same weight bullets. The Blackout is not even close. I know some shoot deer with it, but I know of people that have killed a lot of deer with a .22 Hornet too, but that doesn't mean it's a good choice for that job. It's a great close range varmint gun from my perspective. It's best niche would be suppressed with subsonic ammo for varmints without disturbing the neighbors. Thanks for doing such a fantastic job with your videos. I consider your gel tests as being by far the best. Thank you.

The reason you see some rounds outperform the box specs is because you are shooting out of a long barrel and lots of manufacturers get their data from sbr length barrels. The 300 aac was designed to take out targets of the 2 legged type at closer ranges with subs so considering it does as well as it does is a minor miracle. I hunt a few places that only offer shorter range shots and have had solid luck with the Barnes 120 grain tac-x. I load them myself usually and shooting out of a bolt action I can get a little better performance than most factory stuff. For lots of hunters it’s a viable choice

I'm still a bit standoffish when it comes to this loading but not for the reason(s) you might think. I, and several of my friends, have had trouble with the flex tip ammo from Hornady. The two biggest have been inconsistent/iffy expansion with some, not all but some, bullets acting more like FMJs that just pass straight through and (with the lever gun version ONLY) deformed bullet tips which apparently leads to poor or degraded accuracy and poor to nonexistent expansion. On paper key holing is not uncommon. I keep a couple of boxes on hand for my Winchester '94 and Marlin 336s but I tend to utilize more "traditional." rounds for hunting and humane shots on deer and hogs. Same for my friends. I've been considering the purchase of one of the straight wall ".300s" to supplement, but not replace, my current lever gun choices, but I'm going to take a soft pass on the .300 Blackout for the time being. Having said all that, I did enjoy and appreciate this video and hope to see more on the caliber from you as time allows. Take care and good huntin'!

I’ll not enter into the debate about which cartridge is better. The best cartridge to shoot is the one you like for the hunting you do. Other opinions are noted, but are irrelevant. I will say that many 300 BLK ammunition manufacturers have failed to put a working bullet on top of their 300 BLK cases. This is a rip-off for the user and it gives the caliber a very bad reputation. Once you pull the trigger, it is the bullet that conveys your intent to the target. Spend as much as you want on your fancy rifle…but shoot the wrong ammo in it and it will not perform. The 300 BLK uses pistol powder, not rifle powder. That’s how it achieves its muzzle velocity in shorter barrels. But this caliber will never have the muzzle velocity of a .308 Win. So don’t ever buy 300 BLK ammo that uses bullets normally found in .308 Win cartridges. It will not expand because the 300 BLK velocity is too slow for the .308 Win bullet erroneously seated into the case. That doesn’t make the 300 BLK a bad round. It means you’re stupid for using the wrong bullet. It’s called physics. There are only a couple of manufacturers who have figured out the secret to getting good performance out of a supersonic 300 BLK. That secret: use a light, fast bullet that is designed to expand at velocities under 2200 ft/sec. Barnes and Nosler have broken the code with their 110 gr ballistic tipped bullets. I handload the Nosler 110 gr Varmageddon bullet and get Vm of 2400 ft/sec out of my suppressed 300 BLK carbine. It is hell on feral hogs out to 140 yds. Am I going to use this platform to try to kill an elk at 600 yds? No…because I’m not stupid. Every weapon has its own kinetic envelope. Know it. Stay within it. Hunt successfully. Pretty simple. And don’t knock the 300 BLK subsonic capability either. Again…pick the right ammo. Hornady figured it out with their 190 gr SubX ammo. Amazing stuff!!! Excellent expansion and tight groups. I’m a big fan of it.

It would be interesting to see how all these .300 bko do at 50 yards vs 100 yards on the expansion and penetration.. I watched the Winchester USA ready test with the 125 gr open tip. I will say the mushrooms on those were pretty impressive for a .300 bko, would be interesting to see if those same rounds are giving similar results at 50 yards vs the 100 yard performance. In a real world hunting situation most shots with it will be under a 100 yards in most areas.

I've shot several deer and a few 75 to 150 lb hogs with the 300 BO. Where I hunt, deer are small, does often weigh under 100 lbs on the hoof. I not impressed w 300 BO. I also made a big mistake trying 208 grain open tip subsonics. That was really a big mistake. Shot a few critters w 150 Blacktips also. Those killed 'em, but not anywhere close to the way a 270/308 does. IMO, for hunters, 300 BO is a solution looking for a problem. Subsonic rounds aren't always good at expansion, and they have a terrible trajectory if you don't know the distance to your target beforehand. And to improve your bullet performance you generally need to pay a lot more for premium ammo than you do for most other hunting rounds. Super sonic rounds have better, but still ho hum performance on game. Might as well shoot 7.62x39 in an AR, or use a 30-30. For deer and pigs, I like rounds that are 6mm+ caliber, and close to or that exceed 2000 ft per sec on the target, not just at the muzzle. Discussing hydro static shock seems to be out of fashion now a days, but I think there's something to it. I seem to have far more DRT results when using expanding rounds that meet or exceed the above. I don't hunt with the larger caliber AR based rounds such as 350 L and above, but I think I'd be okay with one of those in some circumstances. A slow moving bullet that makes a hole large enough to stick your finger through doesn’t need as much hydrostatic shock as a 25 to 30 caliber bullet in most cases. But where I hunt, I consider their rainbow trajectory a disadvantage though. To me, 6.5 G and 6.8 SPC seem like sort of the minimum for fast, human kills. I have not tried 6mm ARC. It seems like a pretty small diameter though. The 243 has a great track record, but it's a lot faster than 6mm ARC. I've tried medium game loads in .223 with grain weights in the upper 70s to 80's, but in my experience, those rounds just ice pick the animals. They eventually die, but they often travel a ways before they do, and they don't leave much of a blood trail. That's a significant issue for me as I shoot a lot of hogs after dark. Looking for a hog that might still be alive by flashlight is not fun, especially when you're by yourself, and they always go for the thick stuff. I like DRTs, or at least being able to see it laying on the ground pretty close to where it was shot, and making ear and neck shots can be tricky after dark. That's just my 2 cents. I appreciate the vids, I've watched most of them. Usually after watching one on 300 BO, I think to myself "And that's why I stopped using the 300 for hunting". But I'll take your recommendations into consideration in the event I decide to un-retire my 300 BO for hunting.

I agree - good points on 300 BO. I started using the same rifle last year. Was shocked at accuracy. Shot 3 does in Texas hill country with 110 V max. Thought was the extra velocity would make up for lighter bullet. 2 deer at 75 yards ran about 40-50 yards before dropping. 1 at 125 yards got away. 2 that dropped - the bullets both stuck in hide and rib cage on other side. I’m going to try some 125 grain hollow points this year. However, this one may be retired for the 30-30.

I missed a monster buck today due to a miss fire using these rounds in my AR. When I fired the shot sounded strange and weak. The deer dropped down a bit but didn’t go down and was still standing there so I went to put another in it but no fire. I looked down and it was all jammed up it hadn’t ejected the first round but also jammed another round in. Had to watch it run away as I tried to clear the gun and chamber another round. Ended up finding no hair or blood anywhere after searching for a while. This was at only 30 ish yards.

@masonoutdoors_masonleather
@masonoutdoors_masonleather 3 ай бұрын
The terminal difference would be extremely minimal if at all. The velocity difference would be extremely minimal, 300 blackout isn’t a long-barrel cartridge and its most prevalent use by far is in 16” barrels. Also, the impact velocity at 50 or 100 yards would be affected even less than by the 2” difference in barrel length, meaning the bullet will slow down more due to distance than barrel length affect.
