Like Stories of Old This is also one of my favorite sci-fi films. It’s such a subversion of the standard blockbuster, with an emotional and toned down score and the incredible visuals; its so powerful and transcendent. I can’t thank you enough for the work you do on this channel. Your videos are probably my favorite discovery of content in several years. I’ve shared it with more people than I can count. Please keep doing what you are doing. Each one is its own incredible short film and provokes thought and discussion in the same way the films you deconstruct do. I genuinely appreciate everything you do! -Carl

I really love the ending scene in that the burning flames of the sun suddenly stop just in front of Capa, as if it knows someone's there. Capa touches the surface smiling happily. It's surprising that the director described that way, that the flames were not extremely hot but rather mildly warm for Capa to be able to touch them.

It’s the moment Pinbacker was talking about in the observation room. All the rest have moved on, and the last man remains. For a moment, he is alone with God. But while in Pinbacker’s vision that was the end, all was stardust when it passed, in Capa’s truth it was the beginning, and all was life and solar fire.

O my God. Finally an exploration of this film that captures the elegance, tragedy, hope, despair, and joy of humankind’s quest for survival. As the fundamentally narrow-minded Pinbackers of this world place self-importance above self-sacrifice, it is invigorating to revisit a story that celebrates sacrifice for the common good. A story told with such insight and editorial and technical mastery. When Sunshine came out, I drove down the steep roads to the Englewood Cliffs, NJ cinema four times for a matinee showing of this film, with the noon-day sun shining in my eyes. And my sunglasses are not as nice as Dr. Searle’s. Your inclusion of the comments by the immortal Carl Sagan was particularly moving. Thank you for reviewing this film not just as a critic, but as someone whose heart understands the message captured in each frame. Sunshine changed my life; yours is the first review to make me love it even more. Bless you, if you are into that kind of thing. We are all stardust.

I don't know, having seen enough of Sam Harris' increasingly irrational and self-assuring content, I don't know if the the latter is a path to humility given New Atheism has become as much a religion as theism.
@willferrellssweetnips
@willferrellssweetnips Жыл бұрын
@@Mr.Ambrose_Dyer_Armitage_Esq. Atheists aren't a monolith, bud. Just because he may be the loudest, doesn't mean he speaks for us. Like with any group that has ever existed, there will be leaders and followers, and those who refuse to play the game. The dozen or so atheists I have talked to across the U.S. are very individualistic, some were borderline anti-collectivist and none of them would be seen trading in their individualism and the freedom that comes with it for a community that basks at the "glow" of Sam Harris. Because every group has, its do's and don't's, taboos etc. and that reeks too strongly of society/religion to be palatable to us for very long. That said, I can see why people new to atheism flock around him, as he can help people think about things outside of a religious/societal framework, and provide a way for like-minded people to get to know each other, which is immensely helpful to a budding atheist. Hopefully they develop past that though, to trust in their own reasoning, as this would be yet another instance where learning to think for yourself is the ultimate goal, and building on that foundation once you have it. To me, the stigma of atheists being pretentious jerks comes from people who recently discovered atheism and want to "evangelize" (lol) that newfound lifestyle, much to the dismay of everyone inside earshot. Which would explain why so many people dislike proponents of Sam Harris. At any rate, I hope my point was communicated effectively as I have been sick for 3 days and feel like I'm in a fever dream at points. Cheers 🍻

@@willferrellssweetnips That was an unnecessarily long-winded cope and I'm of the same mind after reading as I was before; in the end, the only judgement I can truly trust is that of my own experience and of the hundreds of atheists I've encountered, there were maybe one or two who had a genuinely empirical and humble approach to having obtained their beliefs whereas the rest were evidently people with chips on their shoulders using "science" and "reason" to justify their own conclusions instead of arriving at them through them. The exceptions do not change the rule. Nevertheless, I hope you and your family are able t o share a lovely Christmas together and that 2023 proves to be a challenging and developmental year for you. _Prost! Like many science fiction films, Sunshine is about a crew of characters and a plot-centric encounter. Typically, this encounter is with something alien or unknown, like a random planet, a virus, or perhaps a malfunction within their ship from the strains of space. In Sunshine however, the central encounter is with something every human being recognizes from birth. Thus the film becomes a reflection; not just on knowledge, but on choices in response to that knowledge. The cinematography and visual brilliance of this film display these elements in the extreme. Great video mate, a viewing pleasure as always. I’ve shown your work to family and friends and everyone loves it, so keep it up!

Studying psychology, I think our brains are designed to understand our environment and the events in it as narratives. We see our lives as stories, even if they are just a collection of moments. Our biology makes it necessary to make sense of life and ourselves this way. Accepting that does not make stories insignificant, on the contrary. It makes them more important than ever.

I've been following you for a short while, but never thought to check if you had analysed Sunshine. This movie is one of my favourite movies, of any styles. While I believe your analysis is accurate, Sunshine - and 28 Days Later at that too - has always been, for me, a comment on how, ultimately, humans are the real evil. It is not an alien that will destroy the ship, put the mission in jeopardy, dissemate the crew (both crews) and thereby put an end to Earth's population, but another fellow human. The same was true with 28 Days Later: zombies everywhere, but it's the surviving army crew and its leader that pose the greatest threat to the group of survivors. Other humans are humans' greatest threat... This movie is a true work of art. As a scientist, I loved watching with the physicist' commentary track again and again. The cast is stellar. I've just rewatched the movie and I can't believe Trey is Benedict Wong! I love him but I hadn't realized I had seen him act as early as Sunshine. Same for Mark Strong. Michelle Yeoh is amazing as always, same for Cliff Curtis and Hiroyuki Sanada. Admitedly, I was taken with Cillian Murphy and Chris Evan.

"Sunshine" is probably the best remake of all time. I know that it's supposedly an original film but that's because the 1990 film "Solar Crisis" had such a low budget for a B grade film that it's been completely forgotten. Danny Boyle's renditions of my favorite childhood films are the best versions by far. I think I was the only person who even remembered the 1981 British miniseries "Day Of The Triffids" which had it's plot-line reused for "28 Days Later" (swapping Triffids for the infected). It's like the movies from my childhood grew up with me thanks to Danny Boyle. Disclaimer: I know that "Solar Crisis" was rated PG-13, but I only ever saw the Television edit, so it was basically a kids movie.

You subverted people's expectations- we thought that you'd have something to say regards its infamous 3rd act. But you surprisingly left it out in favor of exploring the larger themes at play in 'Sunshine', which the audience probably missed out, courtesy of the "slasher film" final act. Great job once again !!! Looking forward to more of your videos ! - From Kolkata, India.

I don't know how you do it, but your videos are frequently perfection. They stir the mind and the emotions in new perspectives and open doors from pain and suffering into spaces of healing. Strange to say it but they are what l would expect going to a shrink would be like...but these are perfection and the shrink is just an pale imitation. Maybe it's the analysis of a story combined with Philosophies of life mixed in. At heart everything comes down to stories...ours and others....fantasy and fact...everything can be told.

With the addendum that it has a terrible example of a healthy marriage. He manipulates events so she ends up with him and not another guy instead of trying to win her over honestly, taking her choice away in the matter. And he never tells her about something that's a huge, often active part of his life and connection with his father. And because of that, he can't explain why he's mourning a child she doesn't remember having.

Sunshine is easily in my top 5 all-time favorites. But I cringe every time Sagan is mentioned. Being 50 y.o, the TV show Cosmos was originally aired when I was in my formative years. I marveled at the wonders of knowledge on display, but the insistent hammering on how we are nothing more than a speck in the Universe on an insignificant dot in an insignificant solar-system distracted me so much from my vastly more ambitious fantasies that it kinda killed my enthusiasm for him as a public figure, a scientist of some stature, to a philosopher coming to terms with his own mortality in the most misleading, albeit cosmic, shape and form imaginable. His storytelling was great though, until I started to watch James Burke, was blown away and then that last vestige of appreciation washed away as well. Add to that the sheer deification that Sagan's followers bestow upon his legacy, and I can't help but feeling shallowness in linking him with my Top SciFi movie. HOWEVER, Sunshine is the chymical wedding of content and shape, of form and void, of script and Great Acting; and I welcome every attempt to bring new life and new appreciation to this loved by some and misunderstood by many, movie. Some have remarked about 'doing' Aranofski's The Fountain.. Why not throw in Singh's The Fall or The Cell as well. For me, these highly visual movies need little spotlighting. I would like to see you 'do' movies I did not understand or could watch in one sitting, like maybe The Zero Theorem. Hell even 500 Days Of Summer could be mined for unexpected wealth of story and Art of Telling it. Enough of the constructive criticism. I liked this one. As always, can't wait for your next project. Go Tom!

What exactly is your objection to Sagan's thesis? Seems to me that the universe's indifference to humanity and the earth, and the vast and overwhelming size of it all in comparison to us, is 1) a conclusion supported by all the relevant science, and 2) vital for the public to understand. And, as there are still people who persist in the belief that the universe was created for us, or that we hold a special place in it, the point seems no less relevant today.
@ReFractalus
@ReFractalus 5 жыл бұрын
@@AdamLeuer oh I don't object to the thesis. I just feel that on a philisophical level, it feels so... nihilistic. And in having a nihilistic feeling, the value of the experience of being a part of a larger whole, albeit an objectively small one, diminishes the value of the experience. And while this concept itself can be used to illustrate parts of the narrative, which is what this video is al about, it takes me out of the story because I have such ambiguous feelings about Mr. Sagan.
@thetimeisninefifteen
@thetimeisninefifteen 5 жыл бұрын
@@ReFractalus I understand what you mean about Sagan. It is the minimization of humanity that you seem to rail against, as nihilism states that due to our size-relative insignificance in comparison to the infinity surrounding us, we don't matter. To that, I would say; even before I saw the pale blue dot image, I tried to explore the conceptual space of infinity, and my drive was to make things matter that much more, as we are only able to exist currently in one place...so we must move through life with that in mind.

I think an interesting way of looking at the "Pale Blue Dot" is the idea that we are slowly becoming a larger part of this universe. In times of old, the world had undiscovered regions and seemd endless. However even now we look back on that, say as an American looking back at the history of Europe, Africa, and Asia, we notice how we sprang out of the "old world" to new domains. The existence of the image of Earth can ironically be taken to make an opposite meaning. The fact that we, as miniscule and insignificant as we appear, were able to "leave" our domain and self reflect, is an absolute testament to not being so insignificant. We may have futility on the Grand Scale, but humanity has started to escape the Pale Blue Dot. Getting a probe to where it can even capture that image is a sign of the power of human beings to strive into the void and nothingness, to venture out into the "great, distant, significant universe". It's a small step, but a small step is insanley larger than no step at all.
@JamesDannySheives
@JamesDannySheives 5 жыл бұрын
The scale of the universe is simply a result of the length of time it's been around and has absolutely nothing to do with meaning or the significance of human life. It's a faulty comparison.
