I loved what Lil Nas X did with the song. He's very young and very creative and very talented. I did not know that this video existed. Now I will check for more of him from the session. Thanks for the link to the original video, now I can watch the other 3 videos of him in the Live Lounge that BBCRadio1 posted.

Hearing a Man sing this was really great and a refresh of the original version...may not have given me goosebumps but was unique enough that I enjoyed it.

There have been a couple somewhat notable male artists who have performed "Jolene" over the decades, but there's never been a male artist anywhere near Lil Nas X's commercial stature that's done it. No notable African-American male artist either. He crosses a lot of genres, but "Jolene" is quite far outside his prior territory. Even though it's a big stretch, he did it well and competently (I agree), deliberately in a stripped down fashion. On top of all that he happens to be gay, so performing "Jolene" with original lyrics has a special resonance that also aligns with his "Thats What I Want" music video he released 4 days prior and with Bisexual Awareness Week (the week that spanned both this performance and his music video). In short, there's a LONG backstory, and for multiple intersecting reasons it's an important performance.

WHAT??? I've heard of him, I figured he was just that newer rap crap, I was wrong! Dang, that voice! Chuey liked it, I liked it, I wonder what Dolly thinks. It was respectful and sweet. That southern syrup in his voice is wonderful! Low ball score, in my opinion, Chuey gave him 3 country paws up! Will you do more from him??

This sounds like a very complicated love triangle. I know exactly why a US country chart would remove it, and I guarantee it wasn't anything to do with not being country enough. He has a great baritone though - very warm. But in the end - not really. Kind of nothing much going on. I'd rather have Miley live in that garden.

It wasn’t this one that got removed. It was Old Town Road. Lil Nas X only did Jolene for the BBC session. It hasn’t been released anywhere else.

Yeah I agree with you guys it was an ok performance, nothing spectacular, I was expecting the band to kick in and spur it on a bit but it just kind of fizzled out like a damp firework :)

His Old Town Road song covered by Walk Off the Earth would be an interesting one for your WWWednesdays. Post Modern Jukebox covered it also. As for his Jolene cover, did nothing for me I’m afraid. ☹️ Sounded a bit karaoke tbh. I liked his hit song and music video which was a lot of fun. Other than that, don’t know anything about him. Will check out what else he’s got. It’s a 7/10 from me. 🙂👍
