Great stuff, Lila! I learned the 3-point "Rembrandt" setup in film school as well. But fashion photographers and cinematographers have been using the "butterfly" setup for ages and it was a real eye-opener when I learned about that. Watch old romantic films from the 30s and 40s. The famous Marlene Deitrich portrait the was copied by Queen is an exagerad version of the butterfly setup. I've done a 'tiny' amount of fashion photography and straight-on light just above the camera is always a great choice - looks great on everybody. I also add a small bounce underneath to put a little light under the chin and neck. That's not generally practical for the average YT setup at a desk, though. Your setup looks great!

It's just basic three point lighting. She just didn't really give you a straightforward message. Also she didn't ID the back lights as backlight. So three point lighting... You have a key to the right. A fill light that is softer to the left. An a backlight to give you that cinematic highlight, Wich I think she over does with where she placed her backlight

Obsessed with the all black walls lol! A Pro tip on glasses and reflections: Something we'll do often times is just tilt the glasses down slightly. So the backside is not sitting on your ears exactly but just slightly above, while the front is tilted down. This gets rid of all light reflection usually :)

@@lilafromyoutube what can i do to make my ring light softer? maybe place a light fabric on it to cover the ring and soften the light?
@real8304
@real8304 Жыл бұрын
@@hnia0 you need space between the light source and the diffusion, so placing the fabric directly on the ring won't do. As an option you can improvise a frame for the fabric to be attached to (with a hole in the fabric for the lens to go through if that's what your setup requires), then a way to rig this frame some distance in front on the ring (it can be a separate stand or some extension allowing to attach to the same stand the light ring is on or the camera tripod). The amount of diffusion will depend on the thickness of the fabric and the distance from the light. Diffusing will always take away some of the intensity of your light source, you might want to take that into account. Experiment.

"Is this professional? No." Oh my. I've been on sets with pros lighting an interior of a house from outside (it was raining outside, but we needed a warm, mid-afternoon lighting feel inside) and while they paid all the attention necessary to safety, then to achieving the onscreen light, outside the tarps all gaff taped together were not a concern. I remember being out there with the two people doing the lighting and thinking, "well, this will be interesting" but they absolutely nailed the desired result. I learned that "professional" looking setups or mounts don't matter. What matters is the onscreen product, and yours looks very professional. :)

Thanks for the commentary on moving the lighting head-on. I was having the problem of "extra character accents" on my face suddenly appearing with the lighting "ideal 45 degrees". I moved my lights head on and I feel like it works best for me in my set-up so I can concentrate on content. Not on facial features which suddenly have become movie stars on their own. Overall, this video is a wonderful change from the same old info we see everywhere. I do presentations often and I have been able to take better control of the lighting in various situations and make I'll make suggestions based on tips from this video. Thank you !

Gizmo! I love the colours you chose for the background Lila! I'm slowly adding more lighting options to my kit, and have been saving up to get something like the 120d II or 100d since those should be powerful enough for both photo and video projects. My first Aputure light was the MC RGBWW LED. That tiny light really opened up a bunch of possibilities while in college and added pops of colour in an otherwise drab background. I'd love to grow my kit with more Aputure lights and those tube lights have been in my shopping cart for a long time. 🥰 I also love how you spoke with other female KZfaqrs about lighting and included tips for glasses wearers (Mine always seem to catch reflections 😱). Keep up the amazing work and thank you for being such an inspiring person Lila!

Nice vid Lila, thnx for your help.I have a question, if you are sitting so close to the wall, how can your keylight not light too much the background in that tiny space and manage to keep it so dark in the first example? Is it the position of the light the key to avoid that?

Thank you so much for your videos! Dumb question: what paint color is your wall? I see that color in most youtube setups, but don't know what it translates to in terms of sherwin williams/behr type "gray charcoal on a cloudy day" type names.

instead of a softbox you can also use some smooth whitish surface like a wall or even a sheet of paper to make the light much smoother

Instead of a filler light, if you are on a budget, get some white foam core poster board. The light from your key light will bounce enough to lighten and soften the skin on the other side of the face.

Really enjoying the black walls in the studio! Mind sharing what shade of black you chose to go with? It looks like it has a slight blue tint. I would also love to know if you decided to do your ceilings as well. Thanks Lila!

It’s actually anthracite, not black! But it looks black on camera. It’s a rental so my ceilings are still white as we don’t want to go through the trouble of painting it white again 😂

So update: been having a lot of fun with the fx3. Hell of a camera. Ordered a rode ntg5 today. Will be getting amaran 200x s soon. Ill go through all of your videos looking for tips and tricks. I've been an audio engineer for a while so not new to the gear world. Just didn't need to worry about graphics cards before this 😂 also never felt my samsung t7 get hot until I had to render 4k videos last week. Anyways thanks for helping inspire me

Great video. My room is pretty long and the wall behind me (when I face the camera/computer) is 4m away. With the lightbox I have it lits up the room and I can't find a way to get that all dark room the way you and other youtubers show. Is this an issue with the choice of light?
