Breeders sometimes are faced with a puppy that is not feeding properly because the mom has little milk or the siblings are pushing the weaker one away. And some are rescues as well.
We raise Yorkies and Biewers and have developed many years ago what we believe is a novel way to feed the puppy by replicating the natural method used by nursing mothers.
We hope that this idea can be useful to other breeders who are trying to save a puppy from malnutrition.
Remember to never leave the puppy unsupervised with a sponge in it's mouth. Use common sense when handling any newborn puppy.
We have been asked, but we don't actually sell kits to people as we would not want to profit from this potentially life saving method of helping a puppy or kitten in distress. It belongs to the world as far as we are concerned.
For posterity, we have decided to call our life saving feeding system "Nature's Udder Mother"
The products used in our video were purchased in Canada at Home Sense and Winners. We have found some web links to similar products on the internet:
Here is the link showing the heating bags. Ours are called tictac bags, but the same thing, the same products are often found elsewhere:
• Heat in a Click - Promo
Here is the link to their page.
www.heatinaclick.ca/index.html
Browsers Buttercup Bed
www.theuncommondog.com/Bowsers...
Here is a website that will show some puppy beds.
www.the-dog-bed-store.info/snu...
There are probably hundreds of websites showing similar items. We don't recommend any particular product. Just trying to help out those looking for the supplies.
NOTE: we have had a lot of emails in regards to the sponges that we use. The brand name is NOT Visage sponges. That is actually the French word for "FACE" sponges. All drug stores carry latex free makeup sponges.
We are very pleased to see many videos out there using this life saving method. Any mammal can benefit and we hope that the technique continues to be shared by all animal lovers.
When we posted our video in April 2013 we did not see any sponge feeding videos of puppies but now their are quite a few out there and we see some improvements in the method that we originally used.

This has seriously warmed my heart with joy. Its lovely to see and know their are proper breeders out there who care and love their dogs and puppies. I hate hearing about breeders who just care about money money money and not giving two hoots about the mothers and their pups. Thank you for showing us this xx

This is the smartest idea for a tiny pup I have ever seen. I wish I knew this when I had a micro chi in my litter. I lost the little guy at 5 week, tube feeding him. He almost made it and I feel sick every time I think of that. Thank you for educating me.

+Claude Bisson I wished I would have known this 3 yrs ago. I took in a stray and realized she was pregnant. She was a Chihuahua with pug/beagle babies. she had 5, (1 stillborn), she died about 12hrs after (a sweet dog). I tried to take care of these lil pups, i took them to the vet, watched a lot of videos, learned a lot but, sadly, all died but one. It was a very heartbreaking experience, feeling like I failed them & their momma They were born April 23rd 2012, one passed right after mother's day & a piece of me died with them. I still have the 1st born, and is the silliest dog I've ever known. He is my heart. My Buddha bear. I have each of the pups paw prints I want tattooed. RIP my pups Sweat Pea, Brownie, & Peanut

+kornnutt4eva This is exactly what is happening to me right now. A stray pitbull found us in July, we decided to keep her after being unable to find the owner, and we found out she was pregnant. I'm guessing because the mother had been unhealthy during half her pregnancy, she's been having a hard time with the puppies. Really difficult labor, 2 still borns, and 1 died after a couple weeks even though we tried saving her. And mama is having her own issues. Guess we didn't do some things right even though we researched. Its sad, but at least the remaining puppies are okay. Strays can be tricky. You never know what they've been through before you take them in.

Good to hear mama didn't pass away. Sorry about the pups that did. I'm wondering if because my mama chi was so small, carrying a litter of puggles, made it really difficult for her. She was all big belly, could barely walk. After giving birth, she looked like a skeleton. So sad. She was a wonderful dog. The small time we had her was a blessing.

+kornnutt4eva I didnt know that the mama passed away, sorry about that. The same thing is happening with our mama right now. She's a skeleton. We are feeding her a lot and we are optimistic she will get better. But we are still worried for her :(

You may have saved one of my 2 week old corgi puppy's life with this video. He would not nurse, I had been tube feeding and sub-q and he was getting stronger -- but would NOT nurse. So, I tried this technique and it took a few minutes -- and then he started suckling! After two feedings, he latched back on to Mom and is nursing. I'm continuing to supplement him with this method to be sure he gets enough. (He's small in the litter.) Thanks so much.

I just tried this method and I say you make it look easy. It's not as easy but with a little practice so it should go better. Now I had no kitten to try but five baby rabbits. They still live. Even their mother but she is more interested in making more kids. She has not been home in 12 hours. Thank you for this.

Nice tips...I've been breeding small Jack Russell's for 34 years, I've never had a problem using a syringe and the small nipples as they fit right over a 3cc syringe. I remove the needle hub from the syringe. Using my thumb and forefinger I make a seal on the sides of the nipple in the puppy's mouth while it is nursing. I have never had a problem feeding a pup that needs extra food. I fed an orphaned litter once and I found 2-3 hours worked best. I also liked using a facial tissue to potty the pups. No need to poke them with a Q-tip. Personally I like the pups to be able to use their legs as it is a natural nursing reflex.

Hi Adele, Thank you so much for this video; it saved a 3 ounce premature papillon last week who had no chance to live. I had previously purchased the sponges from a beauty supply, the goat milk and had the syringes on hand. There were three puppies in all. I had to modify the sponge to fit his tiny mouth, but he took right to it. He is now 5 days old and has doubled his birthweight. My vet has asked for permission to use your video for other breeders who tube feed without success. Thanks
