You made the right call watching a live version of this song! This is pretty much how it goes on the album as well, its one big bass solo. Watching Cliff perform it is a much better experience than just listening to it IMO. That technique in the end of the solo was called Finger Tapping

"This is pretty much how it goes on the album as well" Not even close. There's so much improv and skipping over parts in this one, not to mention the double-speed at the end, it's almost an entirely new bass solo. It's always best to start with the studio version, to see (or hear) what the original vision was, and THEN dive into the live versions to see how it evolves and translates live. Lilly really should have done the studio version.

For those who don't know, James Hetfield considers Cliff Burton to be one of the most important members in the history of Metallica, not only because he is probably one of the most talented, but also the most talented In the band, he not only helped write several of the songs, but also taught James Hetfield the basics of harmony and other musical factors.

"(Anesthesia) Pulling teeth" is a bass solo by Cliff Burton w/ Lars coming in at the end... it was something he used to do w/ his previous band Trauma before he joined Metallica in 1983... Lars recalled seeing him do that on stage in San Francisco and knew he would be an asset in Metallica. James said Cliff taught him everything he knew about harmonies and melodies. Cliff Burton was a huge fan of Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead, who also played the Rickenbacker bass in the video, and played w/ a distortion pedal... James and Lars immediately liked his style of playing cos he blended well w/ the guitars. And Cliff loved 70's bassists like Dusty Hill of ZZ Top, Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy, and Geddy Lee of Rush... who were all prolific songwriters and masters of groove. It was a huge loss when he died in 1986... Metallica could not replicate what he was doing, so they went in a different direction w/ bassist Jason Newsted afterwards...

I’ve seen a number of people covering this including Jason and Rob. However, none of them were able to have that same emotion behind them. On a second S&M they did, they let a member of the orchestra perform this on an upright bass. It was amazing! I teared up watching it.

Cliff was such a madman on the bass, the strength needed in his right hand to play that fast is insane (bass strings are a lot thicker than guitar strings). Also, if your intrigued by finger tapping, you definitely gotta watch Eddie Van Halen’s live Eruption guitar solo from 1986. Not Metallica, but truly amazing stuff.

4:38 its called tapping, by putting your picking hand fingers on the higher end of the strings you can get some cool bleep sounds, its more common on guitar, and I think its pretty hard to do on bass, so seeing Cliff do it here really goes to show his talent.

In 83 no one had ever heard someone play a bass like that before. It had to have been mind blowing for the people in that audience. Thing is while everyone focuses (rightly) on his insane musicianship there is something I'd argue more important going on: super high energy. Imagine if he had played all that note-for-note but just stood still. No exaggerated poses. No headbanging. It would be cool to hear, but not as impressive. Cliff was smart enough to know, even with his level of talent, he still had to SELL it to the audience. Make the audience, energy wise, be on the same page as him. It's why when he died and they auditioned for a new bass player they went with Jason Newsted instead of someone like Les Claypool (who is also a bass god), because Jason was always massive high energy and intensity that connected with the crowd more than anything he played ever did.

THIS, is why Cliff Burton got such a reputation, not just because of his tragic death. He was the musician's Musician. You can hear his many influences in his personal style (classical, rock, & jazz primarily). He left this world too soon for us fans, but luckily the success of Metallica brought his musical talent to millions.

One live performance you should check out is on the S&M2 album performance and the song is the memory remains. It is so awesome when the crowd is singing along and they are louder than both metallica and the symphony. When everybody stops playing and the crowd is still going, you can see it in metallicas faces on how wowed they are. To really understand what a genius Cliff was, I would encourage everyone to listen to [Anesthesia] - Pulling Teeth (Live at The Lyceum Theatre, London, UK - December 20th, 1984). Towards the end of this performance, the band plays For Whom the Bell Tolls and there are so many effects in play. You can really notice the Hendrix influence that Cliff picked up on. -- simply phenomenal.

Such a shame he died so young and right when they were becoming HUGE !!! Not only in the thrash scene but they were only a couple years away from being megastars . What a phenomenal and original bass playing style he had . Also it makes me wonder if their sound would have changed as drastically as it did in the mid 90s if he was still alive and with the band ?

Cliff probably had the most eclectic taste in music if anybody in the band… he wasn’t just a thrash bassist. I don’t think he’d be the one keeping the band from trying other things… I would expect him to be leading the charge in trying other things. It seems like the whole band wanted to be more than just a thrash band. How boring would that be doing the same thing for 40 years… they’re artists, they’re creative… they want to try new things. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

Bass does have that lower range, you are correct young sister. It is typically counted on to tie the lead guitar to the drum, bringing rhythm to the others. Led zeppelin would sometimes switch the traditional role of bass and drum, having JPJ play the true time, the core rhythm and the monstrous Jon Bonham would be bass-like in his drumming. Bass is life, flower is great and sharing most things at all times is best. Cheers.

I believe Cliff is the G.O.A.T. because of all that he did in the short time he was here. He was about 21 when this was filmed. Died at 24. Wrote most of it in his teens. Having said that, the the best live Metallica performance in my mind is Moscow '91. Not because of their playing but because of the size of that frigging crowd finally getting to rock out after decades of oppression.

I'm not sure exactly what the official name is of the technique you asked about, but basically he was tapping the harmonics (harmonics are where you touch the fret but don't press down to create a sort of ringing sound). Harmonics are usually played with the (left) fretboard hand, but here Cliff was tapping the harmonics with his (right) plucking hand instead.
@jasonnielsen5976

The technique cliff was using is informally referred to as 'tapping natural harmonics'. If you fret a note and then tap a certain number of frets above it (e.g., 12) using a finger on your other hand, you get a natural harmonic, which gives a chime-like sound. So you can fret patterns with your left hand while tapping the same pattern with your right hand higher on the neck. It's typically done on a guitar but I suppose any stringed instrument would work. If you've ever heard the studio version of Van Halen's "Dance the night away", Eddie usues this technique on his gutar during the chorus and the breakdown section.
