Legit happened to me at 2 different internships I did. They did not have the "budget" to pay my stipend which was 200 USD at the time for the month. But then one had not one but 2 different christmas parties and the other place sent gift baskets to all its clients with artisanal honey, belgian chocolates and expensive coffee among other things. I mean they could have given me a basket and it wouldn't have made even a smidge of a difference. Not to mention I worked overtime almost evryday for free.

That whole scene of those company CEOs breaking down the demographics of their businesses was the funniest part to me in all of this, Lilly. There's a very strange dynamic that revolves around what exactly improves company image. And, that ingenuine approach more so creates opportunity for themselves, rather than the person of hire. You can always sense that, especially when stereotyping plays factor into it. Still, this was a hilarious way to combat the very issue, Lilly

I feel businesses should hire/promote employees based on their merit and experience, but with that said, considering the fact the U.S. is roughly 50% women and 40% people of color, if a business can't get even 20% of it's workforce to be women and people of color that does seem to be an issue with the company's ability to reach out to those potential workers.

Exactly. They have to hire based on merit. So take away the white, particularly male, preference and see what happens. Surely it’s not possible that everybody with actual talent and work ethic looks the same 🤣 These aren’t “businesses” doing this. It’s every industry and institution across the board. It’s everybody.

This issue isn't restricted to the U.S. sadly. You'll find the same problem in most of the former colonial empires which have now to deal with the descendants of the people they exploited in various manners living in their midst. And it seems companies only hire based on merit if you fit the mold of eurocentric culture and values in the way you show-up. Everything from your name to your hair and even the color of your clothes becomes an issue to some of these companies, in spite of their enthusiasm when all they know about you is the content of your resumé (if your name didn't give it away that you're "a minority "). So much for meritocracy...

I am a hard-working female of colour and NEVER faced any racism anywhere. When I am hiring I don't aim to attain diversity but meritocracy and if that means all White or all Asian or all Brown etc., then LET IT BE. We DON'T NEED WORKPLACE DIVERSITY, WE NEED MERITOCRACY and fire all the lazy asses no matter what colour their skin is.
