He wasn't on coke for this interview of course - which weakens the heart and leads to early death through heart problems - despite Mick Jagger famously saying that the only thing that the Rolling Stones had to avoid were "Drugs, booze and Lily Savage." Unfortunately his cocaine intake was far too much for even the Stones, which caused heart problems, but he lived a short and very bright life because of it.

Now that is drag. In the UK we didn't have the pageants and the ballrooms. We had comedians like this who were beacons of hope and laughter, performing in pubs, to the LGBT community who needed somewhere they could chuckle during dark times. That's why our version of drag race provides slightly different talent, that doesn't always work on the main stage. No death drops. No 'ruveals'. No shantay. No sashay. Just unrelenting talent. RIP Paul O'Grady. Thank you for being on the telly when I was a young gay kid. Think you taught my parents a lot on blankety blank!

Paul O’Grady hates RuPaul’s Drag Race lol. He said in an interview that it’s more to do with being a supermodel than with being a drag queen, and to an extent, he has a point. There are queens that go on that show now that have absolutely no idea the history behind the art, or even the LGBT+ movement as a whole. But at the same time, the show (while a heavily watered down version of drag) has allowed the art to reach many more people, and it has got more people into their local bars and clubs to support their local queens. But there are a lot of people that only appreciate drag as far as they see it on their television - and that, to me, and to Savage/O’Grady, is an issue.
