As someone who works on the brands’ side of influencer / content creation marketing, I want to thank you for this video. None of it was news to me personally, but so much will be new to the ordinary viewers, and this transparency is invaluable to help put trust back into influencer marketing campaigns. There has been a lot of backlash against content creators recently where it seems like you guys are cashing on promoting consumerism, so it’s refreshing to see you explain this whole work cycle and how much thought and consideration go into it, with so much honesty. Great job!

Idk I think it's nice when people disclose whether something has been given to them for free and whether they had a discount. You say it's a matter of trust and I agree, it's not like I don't trust the content someone makes if they don't mention that something was gitfed but when someone is transparent with their audience in regards to gifts and discounts the content creator gains my respect.

This was-for me- probably your best video ever! I've always trusted your integrity but this my friend, as they say in my circle of friends, is off the chain! Although I'm sure this wasn't your intention, you have scored major points with me for explaining the process so honestly, clearly and transparently. I love to know how things work and not because I want to someday do this myself but because youtube has become a very influential resource of information for me when it comes to buying products for myself and for my family. Thank you so much! I really enjoyed this video.

Ok so, I’ve watched this full video and kudos to you Lily. Good on you for having your say, it’s clear, logical and all totally fair! If there are some people who respond in a negative fashion, personally I feel they should move on... this is how you earn a living and true viewers wouldn’t want you to be terrified. I appreciate your transparency, keep doing you Lily! All the above said with positivity. Great job Lily.

I'm the type of consumer that usually will research A LOT before buying something that an influencer is recommending. So I never use their link but I buy something because of them... Lovely video, Lily, thank you so much! And I totally agree with the shotgun of IG or YT content at the same time, about the same product. I really dislike them and I had no idea that you guys didn't know that there were a lot of influencers doing the same campaign.

It's not so much that I find your profession confusing, it's more the case that influencers project shadiness in all that they do when speaking to us. However, I just want to say it's NEVER anyones business to know what people earn, neither should you feel pressured to disclose that. I also commend you on being clear with us in this video, you're clearly a person with integrity. Thanks.

The reason brands don’t like Influencers disclosing when something was gifted is not mainly due to the brand being inundated with requests, it’s more because the ‘view’ or ‘engagement’ generated off the back of the influencer’s content is more valuable if it seems there is no existing commercial relationship between the brand and influencer. If the brand has no influence on the content then there is no need to disclose as an ad, but due to the unique relationship influencers have with their audience (vs other advertising platforms) I think it shows respect for their audience when they do.

Lily this video is actually amazing. So informative and I think it's good that you are being transparent. I'm only a small content creator but I've been blogging for years and worked on the flipside of it all in PR, I always think back to why I started it and it's all about passion which is exactly why I haven't gone full time because I would have to accept sponsorships and talk about brands that just wouldn't sit well with me to make a comfortable enough living. It's so easy to see through content creators that work with brands for the wrong reasons, I have luckily never doubted any of the people I watch (you included) xx

Lily, this was GREAT. I always think of YT as an alternative to buying many magazines in previous decades... I use it for the same purpose, to get recommendations for products from women similar to me, or to see beautiful images, or to dream about products and experiences that will never be within reach for me. I always hold YT creators to the standards I’d expect of women’s magazine writers/editors. After watching this I think you’re (content creators) actually much more objective than the magazine writers of old. I love YT even more now, even if I am a couple of years too old to be a millennial!

Just wanted to say “good on you” for confidently saying “I know my worth” 👏🏻. I think, particularly as women, we’re taught to just be nice, subservient and grateful for any scrap that’s thrown our way. At the end of the day you’re a business, not a charity, and you should be properly compensated for the work you do. Never be ashamed of standing up for yourself - it’s not conceited or arrogant, it demonstrates self-confidence and pride in what you do.

I love how transparent you are with you viewers. You are always so authentic regardless of the impact it may have with brands or your audience. There are so many creators on KZfaq/insta that seem to be constantly away or buying so many products/clothes/bags and don’t actually say it’s PR or free. I find these are the ones that caused the whole “influencer” thing which worries me because often their viewers are younger and easily influenced because it’s often clear they wouldn’t normally use or buy what they are advertising which gives other honest youtubers a bad rep

I waited for this video for so long and I can honestly say it was worth it. I am not one to always comment or react to a picture or a video of anyone I watch or follow, but this time I feel like I need to let you in on my thoughts. I studied journalism and advertising and I was upset on how little they knew and talked on social media and blogs. It is a very important part of our lives now and I feel like videos like this one should be used as an example of how to let people in on the "secret" (which I know is scary for brands as some of them feel it would ruin their ads). Overall I liked all the points you made and explanations you gave and I need you to know you are a champion for doing that! I hope this video goes down well because honestly, you deserve every bit of applause for that! Congrats, Lily

Hi Lily. I found you because of a tweet by Lydia Elise Millen. I am sooo glad that I did. I’ve been curious about this process, and never realized how complicated it was, nor did I know the many facets of it. Since this is my first time at your channel, I am assuming you must be great at what you do because you have nearly 500K loyal subscribers. But in the short time that I’ve watched (only 17 min through a 40 min vlog), I can tell that you are a great analyst. You are methodical in how you take an audience through a subject matter, your explanations are concise and simple, and you are thorough in your coverage of the subject matter. Just wanted to drop you a line and acknowledge the hard work that must have gone into the making of this video for us, including all the prep you had to do to organize it in the way you did. Thanks for now...gotta go and watch the rest of your video. .... P.S. apparently I cannot follow a simple direction that was provided at the beginning of this video which was “to watch the video all the way to the end before commenting”. Oops 😬😊

As a smaller creator (only 16k subs) I have started recently getting approached by brands in the last 12 months or so (mainly because my views are much better than my sub count) I found this video mega helpful Lily because I struggle to establish my worth! Some brands will ask me what they feel time time is worth (along with with my analytics and stats across my social media) This works well for the most part especially in terms of sponsored content (which I hardly do...maybe 2-3 in a year as like you im super picky) But I really struggle to define my worth as a creator generally. Don’t get me wrong I don’t worry about it too much because KZfaq is more of a hobby for me and the occasional brand collab is more of a learning experience ☺️ but I do get sent a lot from PRs which I really appreciate as it enables me to try and share more... but it’s never an obligation situation, I am also super conscious about coming across blasé about it as I know I’m lucky to get products sent and I would hate to come across as “braggy”... I find his whole area a really grey but this video has really helped me and I’m sure will help a ton of others...both viewers and creators alike! Sorry for such a rambly message Lily and thanks again 💓

I’m only 10 minutes in and wanted to comment on how much I loved this video and your honesty. I’m sure there will be people who will be negative but I think you always come across as transparent and I think 99% of your viewers will agree. I am a long time follower/watcher and have always felt bad that you feel you have to constantly explain yourself to people when you are just doing your job but It made me think that many professions are the same. I’m a teacher and constantly have to justify my ‘9-3’ hours and 15 weeks off a year when in reality my job is tough in its own right and I shouldn’t have to justify it to anyone. Great video, I’d love to see more Q&A type videos on a variety of topics as I love listening to you points of view and probably why I love your podcasts so much. Xx

This is one of the reasons I watch your channel on a regular basis, because you are always open about what you choose to feature. (I sometimes even open videos I am not interested in particularly just so I can ~help with the views, lol). This is really interesting and I think that if more people knew these things it would be much less 'hate' about sponsorships and such. But maybe is the part of me that studied something related to economy and stuff like that understands these situations more. IDK. As I said, I loved the video and I think it shows that you are honest about what you talk about and the products or brands you choose to work with. xx

Massive respect Lily for producing this video. It’s cleared a lot up! I think the reason people get bothered by ads is because we know so little about the industry! So ruddy well done you for this! X

This was so great, I think the less taboo as subject is the more acceptance there will be! I grew up reading fashion magazines not even thinking about how half of the content were advertisements, because I loved the photography and art direction so much. Content creators get so much hate when the biggest part of the problem is that people are not aware of how much money brands spend on marketing and publicity. I love knowing more about the subject and I honestly wouldn't have gotten into makeup, crafts or so many other things, or even know where to start or what to buy if it weren't for youtubers I follow. Thank you for always being so honest Lily :)

This was great Lily! I do wish that brands factored testing time into their campaigns, as I'll be expected to commit to a project before trying the product. Surely it's better to let you use a product in your own time to come to natural conclusions, rather than forcing marketing jargon? I feel like having the weight of management helps, definitely need to stand my ground more in future!

Hi Lily, I don't comment on videos often but after watching this one I feel like I need to tell you what I thought of it. I've been subscribed to your channel since Rich proposed to you so by now I kind of know the way you approach things and the amount of thought you put into everything. So I was surprised when you said on Instagram that you were nervous about this video. I mean I do get it because people on the internet can be really nasty but I think in most cases that's just because they're jealous. When I saw that you were gonna upload a video on this topic I immediately knew it was gonna be very well thought through and honest and you really didn't disappoint me at all. I think it's rare to see creators who produce such informative and relevant content. And even when it's a bit of a controversial topic like in this case you never fail to nail it in terms of leaving your audience with that nice feeling of satisfaction after watching. I learned so much from watching this video and just found it so interesting. I loved how honest you were as well. Also it's incredible how you sit in front of a camera talking to it for almost an hour and still manage to capture my attention throughout the whole thing. So to out all of that in just a few words: Thanks for the great content you always make for us! I hope you didn't give up reading this after two sentences because that's probably the longest comment I've ever written on something but I really felt like you needed to hear/read this. Also I apologize for any grammar mistakes or anything like that because I'm from Austria so English isn't my native language. xx Hannah

Hi Lily and thank you for this video! As someone who works for a media agency and various brands, I know most of this technical stuff, but it was nice to hear the influencer's POV and how the process of content creation works on your part. I applaud the transparency and feel like we need more content creators like you, who care about the quality of their content and see the bigger picture, how their channel will develop and how the audience will perceive them in the long run. I used to think it's very obvious to viewers when a content creator is not being honest about the products they're mentioning, but it seems not everyone is as attentive and critical. I think that brands, agencies and content creators alike need to find an honest way to reach their audience. Transparency will lead us towards better quality products in the long haul.

One of the reasons I love watching your videos is because of how honest you are but never in a negative way and this is the perfect example of this so thank you and I really love you videos xx

You are one of the first youtubers I followed and I will continue to do so, not only because I enjoy all of your content, but because you are so incredibly professional! I know we only see snipets of you online and we have no idea on the behind the scenes Lily,but what we are shown is always consistent, therefore honest. You explained that all really well, and if I did ever had a doubt about an ad video, I feel a lot more equipped to make my own educated decision on it now. It took a lot of courage to upload this video, not because anything wrong could come of it, but it is daunting for ANYONE to describe their job, and put out there what their 'worth' is professionally. Thank you so muh for this video, and all others. You are without a doubt one if the most intelligently charming youtuber I know. A lot of my make up inspiration comes from you, and it isn't just because of ads and "suggesting" brands but it is because of your creativity (for example with renovating) and your style (with make up and clothes). So, thank you.

Yes Lily! So well said. I’ve never understood why viewers get so bothered about ads, we all have to work and earn a living and that’s the way that you guys do it. It’s a shame you all have to explain yourselves as you would never ask someone how they earn their bonuses. But anyway, kudos to you for being the one that speaks out about it! 💗

Lily this just reinforces why I think you’re the best blogger/vlogger. Always keeping it real. I think if you were to stop filming for YT tomorrow, your knowledge in this area but also your clear passion for learning and teaching would mean that you have a great career in whatever you do. Thanks for great content X

Oh wow, this has been SO interesting to watch! I love that you have gone into detail, because I feel like so many people won't. I used to be a professional photographer, and in a similar way, no photographer wanted to open up about money. You mentioned about undercharging, and how it can be harmful to the industry. You're totally right! However, as a new photographer, because no one would open up about how they made their money, what they charged, and so on, even rough numbers, knowing what to charge was a mine field. It was too easy to undercharge, because there was no bench mark. No advice. What you've done here is give an honest insight, not only for your followers, but for those that may want to get into youtube. Granted, figures weren't mentioned (that's quite personal), but finding out how working with a brand goes down is so hard! I can't imagine how hard it must be for youtubers who aren't with a management, and are trying to work out just how this job works. In short, the more information out there about how exactly this whole 'influencer' thing works, the more both consumers and those looking to get into the job will understand. Thank you so much for sharing Lily, I think you did a brilliant job :)

Honestly, Without watching this video I already knew you are so straight foward and engaged with transparency. But seeing the effort and professionalism you put into explaining this makes me so confort and happy as a viewer. As you said usually I only watch people I trust, but you are extremely reliable. I generally don’t comment or like content (feel I am too old to) but know that I get that’s important, I gonna try to change it. Thank you and have a great Sunday extracting that bamboo! 😘

Really well explained. The PR side of things is diificult territory. When I used to go on European press trips as a magazine editor journalists from some countries (e.g. Sweden) wouldn't even take a free pen to write notes with as it could be seen as bribery. It's good when companies bring an educational aspect to the trips so you can go away with something to talk about as well as the brand's latest products/news.

So well done. I waited a little while to watch this because I wanted to give it the dedicated attention it deserved. One thing to consider regarding not mentioning casually that something expensive was gifted; I think part of makes your field/each of you individually so loved is the approachability and feeling that you are a "real" person. I don't care what a movie star uses/wears/carries because it's not comparable to my life. When someone on youtube all the sudden appears to spend $20,000 on 3 or 4 expensive bags in 6 months I start to think things like "should I still participate in viewing their content because they are purchasing/spending in this way and I never would, so I no longer relate to them?" Please don't think I feel like I have any say over what you do or buy at ALL, but I feel less connected to a content creater if they have completely over-the-top purchases frequently. If I new they were gifted, it wouldn't think twice about it. In the past I may have been frustrated over this type of message and considered unsubscribing from people, but had I known it may have been a gift I wouldn't have been frustrated.

Hi Lily. This is the video I have been waiting for on KZfaq for so, so long! As a KZfaq viewer, I have always been curious about the whole sponsorship/AD process, how KZfaqrs worked with a brand, and how they were paid, but I always felt that KZfaqrs were wary or even scared of talking about it because of how they might be judged or because, like anything to do with money, it could be considered a subject too private or taboo to discuss. Thank you so much for explaining the process so transparently and so eloquently. XX

As a viewer I think we need more of these kind of videos, it would make more sense for the viewers and content creators would get less hate and more trust from their audience. Also I'm a fan of (affiliate or not) links, because if you are following someone who has a similar taste or style to me it feels like personal shopping, because with my busy lifestyle I can save more money and time when I see someone else wearing or trying something that I would usually go for, but at the end of the day it's being smart with your decisions that will benefit you and your lifestyle. Thanks Lily for a great video x

So I’ve always been apprehensive of watching you for some reason. But today your renovation vid came up on my feed and I gave it a go. I liked it then I clicked on your channel and saw this vid. I have to say after watching I absolutely love you now!! You’re probably the most sincere blogger/vlogger with bucket loads of integrity which many lack. I will even watch your AD videos now which I tend to shy away from because I understand how you work and believe you have your viewers best interests at heart when you recommend or work with brands. Keep doing you Lily and thank you for being different! X

Very interesting and detailed video. Thank you for that. The only part I didn't like was that one about not mentioning all ways of getting free stuff - because it would be confusing for viewers. I think that people are not stupid, they do understand all possible ways, but they need to know. I would like to be aware, you were gifted home things in your renovation videos (you said yourself they were quite big pieces). I am not an idiot, I know you get free stuff, it is your job. Simple sentence: "This and this was gifted to us." - is fine. I actually get annoyed when it looks like a random video, but you know it is not - like some time ago all the youtubers were unboxing expensive bags of one brand and it looked in their respective videos, they went on a press trip and bought it themselves. But then it came out at similar timing and they all claimed, that they almost forgot they had bought it and were bragging about it. And no disclaimer. I stopped watching most of them. Or watch but do not trust them anymore.

It's a tricky one, it just gets a bit messy. How many times would you have to say it was gifted? Every time you wear it? Or across every platform? In a video it's easy to say "this was gifted" but what about in an outfit photo when some things are and some aren't, or in an instagram story... I totally understand why if you're being paid to say something you need to disclaim and I always did, even before we had to. I agree for big items I always try mention somewhere it was gifted, but every single item of makeup or piece of clothing would be really tricky (if I'm honest). And as a viewer, I never feel the need to know if someone was sent something or not, it doesn't affect my own decision whether to buy it or not.
@ssiissoojj
@ssiissoojj 6 жыл бұрын
I am not talking about average lipsticks and dresses. I am talking about valuable, expensive stuff. Because there is a big difference between people thinking you liked it enough to buy it with your own money and you getting it for free. That can actually affect their decisions. They may think that you liked it enough to finance it yourself.

I know it's different for everyone, but I would say mentioning it the first time you talk about or show the product on KZfaq could be good (on Instagram, I agree that it would be too heavy as the content is shorter/smaller). Or putting asterisks next to the gifted products in the description box is great too, I've seen some creators do that. But oviously each to their own!
