When you talked about Mario 64, Thats actually pretty relatable. There is something not right about the game

I definitely remember getting these feelings as a child while playing not only Mario 64 but also Mario Kart 64. Sometimes I'd load up time trials, turn off the music so that only sounds played and just slowly made my way around the tracks. Tracks such as Wario Raceway, Bowser's Castle, and Toads Turnpike gave me major liminal vibes. It was definitely interesting experiencing those haunting, surreal, and uncanny feelings as a child.

Metal gear solid 1 is one of many games that gives me that nostalgic liminal space feeling

I’ve actually never played metal gear solid! When I played the ps1 I usually played crash bandicoot

I started Bioshock today and that's the feeling I get from walking around Rapture, even though there's enemies lol. Just walking into rooms has that feeling. Rapture feels very surreal to me. Idk maybe that's just me. Also starting the video off with Halo- it fits

@Jackopher portal 1 is another game I'd say gives off that "you're not supposed to be here" vibe. I'd also argue World at War Zombies. I say go for it with Bioshock. It's an enjoyable game

The only games I've had this feeling on are Tomb Rider (the first one), obviously Gmod, and Blade Edge Of Darkness, this last one is spooky because it's the first Souls genre game ever and it's just scary to play haha, I don't feel this with Halo CE or Mario 64 at all, actually I feel like Halo CE has an amazing feeling to it, it makes me feel nostalgia and I wish Halo 2 looked more like it, it was cartoony, and I gues I'm just used to Mario 64 esthetic, maybe I feel this way on Half Life and some maps of Counter Strike 1.6 and CS Source. If you play ANY Halo game on an empty map you will soon find yourself feeling like this, like there's no point, there's no people and something is watching you, this pretty much happens on any shootergame multiplayer map when you play alone.

The sitting room and guest room of the first Luigi’s Mansion always gave me the biggest sense of surreal emptiness. It’s weird, no other room in the game does that to me except those two. They just felt like actual rooms I could’ve encountered as a child while visiting other people

I just noticed, maybe I just simply like liminal spaces? I've always loved games like Portal/HL/superliminal or older games on N64 and PS2 because they were so "clean" looking. Like your brain has an easier time to render the 3D world in your head. I think it also has to do with something called "negative space", which is a design choice. I tend to prefer games/maps etc. that have a good use of "negative space" and Valve was always superb in it. Older games naturally have good use of negative space, as their graphics were simpler and there weren't so many geometrical shapes at the same time on the screen, and in general they used high contrast colors to texture the world. Todays Unreal Engine games all look like one "swamp" of textures and shaders mixed together. It looks more "real" and yet it's sorta harder to simply focus on where you are within the virtual enviroment because of it. The bad use of negative space in UE also makes me feel very unconfortable. Like my brain always has to "render" the world in my head harder, somehow.

I still remember spending many hours in Donkey Kong 64 long after we’d beaten the game. I would pick Diddy Kong and explore the island, pretending to be looking for something, or going through creepy castle pretending I had to stay hidden so the ghosts don’t find me. I feel like along with modern games losing liminal spaces, many have also lost their art direction; in trying to just make everything look realistic, they lose all charm and individuality. As much as I adore ES5 Skyrim, it popularized minimalist GUIs. Before, in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, all of your menus looked like worn parchment paper, your reticles were tainted brass, the icons for items having an almost hand-painted manuscript look. So many games had a unique style to their worlds, it felt as though even the menus fit in with the story the world was trying to tell. But it seems as though as soon as Skyrim entered the zeitgeist, all the other triple-A devs took that as a sign that since minimalism is okay, they can just be lazy, as you said in your 360 Nostalgia video it feels like most everything is just a Hulu or Netflix menu now. I just discovered your channel an hour ago. You do great work, keep ‘em coming, if you’re so inclined (o°-°)b

I honestly agree with games losing their art direction. They do try too hard to be realistic nowadays. Also I appreciate that so much you’re amazing, new videos every Wednesday and Saturday!

The minimalism thing had more to do with design trends changing as opposed to Skyrim being responsible for it, the Graphic Design industry started shifting to cleaner design as a whole around that time.
@VoodooTrashPanda

@@PalmsDesign Reasonable, though with the shear quantity of games that mimicked the vaguely Celtic dichromatic scheme that Skyrim had, I have to feel as though it had its part. There’s definitely still games and applications out there that feel like they put a lot of care into their user experience, but the wide adoption of minimalism took a lot of personality and atmosphere out of the experience. Almost feeling like the game equivalent of Corporate Memphis. I guess I miss the days of skeuomorphism and more polish being put into UI in general.
@VoodooTrashPanda

@@PalmsDesignAnd I realize that I basically stated Skyrim was solely responsible, I probably should have said it *helped* popularize minimalist interfaces. My bad. The biggest purveyors of spreading the aforementioned Corporate Memphis minimalism are probably Google, Facebook, Apple, and Microsoft; in some sort of dystopian arms race/feedback loop to strip as much character out of their products as possible. There’s definitely advantages for workflow in their design philosophy, but as a personal opinion: I do not like the resulting aesthetic.
