This clover food plot is at a 5.4 by adding 2 thousand pounds of lime we should be up near a 6.5 PH. WATCH THIS VIDEO NEXT : • How To Correct PH In F...

the clover chicory plot i made this yr was fairly easy but i have a 40 horse tractor and i planted next to the wood line out maybe 40 to 50 feet in a back field on my old family farm a few fields i keep up discing and mowing with bush hog , i think this season i will let my fields grow up some i'm sure there are weeds and grass' the deer will eat without planting so much food plot or just have a big fall plot and small summer plot with the clover , good luck on your food plot and hunting season n thanks for the video

That's how it's done! Just curious what your program is for maintaining pH. Will you do a soil test in a few years, or just add a certain amount of lime per acre to keep it sweet?
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Hey zeb good question. I actually soil test all my plots yearly at the same time around February or March. See what they are and improve from There. My main program is to build soil. The healthier the soil the healthier the plants the healthier the deer. Adding the correct amount of lime, fertilizer and making sure the micro nutrients are high in the soil.

If I lime in late February to raise my ph will I be wasting my time planting clover this season? Brand new food/kill plot and very first time for me. Gotta raise it from a 5.1 to at least a 6.8
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Not at all. Planting will help with all that as well. But the ph won’t be correct in that short amount of time. Lime now and plant. Retest next year to see. Takes a good solid year to see numbers move

Hey Dave, so I'm in south Michigan and was wondering when should I start liming my food plots? I hunt early bow season completely through till December. I was just looking for that info, I'm planting radishes,clover, brassica mix. Thanks again Dave for the info man. I appreciate ya
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
So you are only looking to plant a fall plot? You can lime now. The longer it’s on the ground the better. You can lime anytime of the year for the most part. Hope that Helps 👊

I'd like to have spring plots as well for the gobblers as well lol but I feel like I'm to late for that now. So I'm looking to up my chances come fall for the deer. Awesome I was just worried about getting my lime out too early now that I know that's not possible lol thanks again Dave

Yeah man no problem. I usually lime Mid to late winter if I have to just so it’s in the ground longer before I plant late spring
@jakesnake4107
@jakesnake4107 5 жыл бұрын
So with spring plots, with it just getting at the end of March would you advise putting clover in now? Or should I wait till July to just do the mix for fall and let it grow?
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Need a little more info. How many plots are you doing? How big are they? Is there tons of agricultural around such as beans and corn? If you are starting these plots for the first time I would wait. I would let things green up then kill It off with chemicals. Disc it then fertilize and plant. If it’s a existing plot you could spread clover now which would be frost seeding. I just posted a video on frost seeding this morning. If you have tons of ag around such as soy beans I wouldn’t even worry about planting a spring summer plot. I’d let them feed out there in the beans and just plant a fall plot.

Hi Dave. Love the channel. Question.....I'm in the market for either a pull behind spreader or one that hooks up to the back of my quad like the one in this video. I own a 2wd Honda Recon ( nothing fancy ). Of the two you have in this video, which do you prefer? Thanks for any feedback.
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. If you are in a rocky or an area with a lot of hills then get the one that attaches to the back of the atv. Flat land get the pull behind. I like the pull behind better but everyone’s situation is different

@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors Thanks for the prompt reply. I live in Michigan, so pretty flat land in most areas. One other question....is there any reason why you choose the Agri-Fab brand over the other company's who make the tow behind spreader?
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
No not really. I just usually google stuff like that find the best reviews and best price average it out and make the purchase lol. With this one I lucked out. It’s pretty tuff and works well.

If my PH is a 5 this year, I put down Pellet lime to adjust to a 6.5 PH, will my PH go back to a 5 next year since pellet lime does not last as long as ag lime?
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
If you get it to your goal it should last 2-3 years
@sethprevette9172
@sethprevette9172 5 жыл бұрын
I think the rule of thumb "1 ton of lime = 1 point Ph" refers to Ag lime. I think pelletized lime is more potent so you don't have to use as much. If anyone is an expert on this please chime in.
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
That’s what they say but from what I’ve seen it didn’t true. Also depends on your soil and if it’s very sandy or clay. If your adding like and it runs right through the soil it’s going to take way more lime and you’ll have to do it every year
@sethprevette9172
@sethprevette9172 5 жыл бұрын
Agree soil type makes a difference. I've also heard ag lime activates slower but lasts longer whereas pelletized works quickly but will leach out faster. In my area Ag lime $40/ton delivered and spread vs. $200/ton bagged pelletized lime + sweat to spread on your own. Big difference.
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Yes there is. Have to use what’s best for you. Getting a truck back to where I need it isn’t possible so I have to use bags. Whatever works
@camhester4251
@camhester4251 5 жыл бұрын
i've heard powder lime was best but i used pelletized for easier use like using the spreader on my tractor , i did use my fourwheeler to level the dirt good with a drag harrow it's a great implement for food plot prep , check out the drag harrow on youtube , ABI implements i think is the video on the drag harrow
@camhester4251

@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors don't forget to fertilize , i think you use a 0-24-24 because the clover makes it's own nitrogen instead of regular 10-10-10 from what i've herd from whitetail institute , i like your spreader on your fourwheeler i think that's all i need for my plot instead of using my tractor and get a sprayer for the fourwheeler and maybe even a mowing deck to top your clover when it flowers but i have a bush hog with my tractor anyway they make a lot of atv implements now day's for smaller food plotting ,check out that 4x4 drag harrow by ABI implements on youtube it's a great piece , good day and hunting to you; thanks for the vids .

Correct on the comment below! 400lbs of pellitized lime is equal one ton of ag lime! Therefore not as much is needed
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Not always the case. I understand in theory situations but there’s a lot of variables that goes into that. The brand of pelletized lime, how much run off you have, what the cation exchange is in the soil (meaning how much it can hold) if it’s sandy then you need more!
