This week I’m taking on Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolour paints, and I’m basically not sure if I like them haha! As you’ll be able to tell from my messy dialogue I’[m very much on the fence, but maybe I’ll learn to like them more if I experiment with them again in the future.
I’m really loving this limited watercolour palette series, the last one will be coming soon in ORAAAANGE! :D
Let me know what you own thoughts are about the Kuretake paints if you’ve tried them, with love, James x

I think they lift easily because they're Japanese Gansai watercolors. Their painting style doesn't use a lot of layers, unlike Western watercolors, so the lifting quality doesn't affect the quality of their artwork.

I know 😉 but I had to comment on the way they behave with the way I use them, and it wasn’t a major drawback for me. I guess my expectations were different since I’ve seen a few artists not mention this as a potential drawback. I’m actually enjoying them a lot more after some experiments in my studio 🖤🖤

This was a fantastic overview of what there is to love/hate about these paints. They definitely require a different technique/approach than traditional watercolors (I believe these are generally described as "eastern" watercolors as opposed to "western" ones). I have this set and I have to be in just the right mood to enjoy working with how they reactivate and the textures they create. I love your beautiful artwork!

Funny how I’ve heard so many good things about these paints for a few years and now that I ordered 2 24 set and 1 12set I get recommendations from people who use these paints and say they don’t like them 😂 I have their graphite set and really loved it and am pretty sure still I’ll love them.

I have these. They can be used like Gouache or as Gouache rather, because of the binder. You dont need to use as much water etc when using them as gouache. Its also why they lift so easily. I've seen a few you tubers use them. Also have my own set. One of the you tubers that got these received them from the actual company. In the letter and instructions she received it stated they can be used like gouache. I think it said Gansai Tambi Watercolour/Gouache. So maybe go in with that mindset. I've not long found your channel and I really enjoy your content. This piece is beautiful. Maybe it's because I'm just starting out ( and late at the age of 31 ) but I didnt see too much texture at all. Cant wait for your next video.

That’s really interesting! I’ll try to use them like that in the future in that case. The lifting is a double edged sword for me like I said in the video, so I’m looking forward to trying them again in the future 🖤 I think the camera didn’t pick up the texture well now that I’ve watched the video back, I’ll try and get better shots of it in the next video 🖤

Hi! Just to share, gansai tambi =/= western watercolors. they were meant to be used with ancient japanese techniques such as calligraphic painting, if that makes sense, so it wouldn't behave the same, but I think you already know that 😄 Originally they were made with animal-sourced 'glue' to bind the pigment to the surface but I think some modern ones have more ethically sourced alternatives to the 'glue'. Love your content ❤️
@Finelinernerd
@Finelinernerd 3 жыл бұрын
Hey zzz thanks for letting me know about the ethical side, I’ve found conflicting info about what the brand use in the paints so I’d love to get to the bottom of that some day 😅 yeah I definitely understand they’re not intended for the way I use them, or the paper I used either really, but I think after seeing certain artists use them in a similar way to me I was surprised about how they worked. I’m definitely going to experiment more though 🖤

From what I understand Kuretake are meant to be used 'as is', so not too layered and straight out of the pan as opposed to like you would with e.g. Daniel Smith where you blend, layer and mix all day. That said, I am glad I found this video as you never quite know what review to believe (most are just sponsored and bleating about how 'awesome' they are without details). For me, these wouldn't work but it was great to see an honest review!

This specific paint set does not use animal glue. These use sugar as the main part of there binder (whicj is why they dry shiny). Other gansai paints use animal glue and other additives.

Loved this portrait. Just found your channel. I heard Gansai Tambi were originally designed for rice paper, as is customary in Japanese art ( woodblock printing or calligraphy, for example). I can see why they were also ot intended to be painted in layers, as some Japanese art prefers more flat washes. In any case, this was a fantastic portrait. I off to explore the rest of your back catalogue. You got a new sub!

I think you had the same exact experience I had 😂 I Felt like I needed them because I saw them everywhere, but there’s something awkward for me working with them, I love the layer as well and it was just not a fit, it felt like I had to learn a whole new technique to get these to do what I wanted. I’m too lazy 😂 the piece turned out really beautifully still James! I love these videos 🖤

Great video! Thank you for the input about Kuretake, they've been an eye candy for me for some time but I think I'll have the same issue with them as you do, because of the way I apply layers and generally not lifting so much color. Looove how you constructed the face and all the shadows showing the bone structure! Btw, why did you wet the paper beforehand and then it looked dry when you started painting?
@Finelinernerd
@Finelinernerd 3 жыл бұрын
I should have made that clearer in the video, I soak the paper before painting to stretch it, then I tape it down and let it dry, but I didn’t explain 🤦🏻‍♂️ sorry for the confusion 🖤 it’s a shame they don’t layer but I guess they’re not supposed to huh, but the way wet in wet applications melt together could look gorgeous for the kinds of backgrounds you do 😍

I've had these paints for a couple of months and I'm still not sure if I like them or not. I too was frustrated by the way they lift with the lightest bit of overpainting, but on the other hand, the way they lift opens possibilities that aren't available with the western style watercolors and gouache I'm used to. The main thing I dislike about these is that when applied thickly, meaning more paint, little water, the paints dry shiny. I just don't find this attractive. Thanks for being honest in this video about your impressions when using them.

How is it that I only now discover your channel 😱 I feel the same way about the Gansai Tambi 😞 I really wanted to like them - the packaging is cute, I love the large flat pans (so good with large brushes!). But I just don't enjoy the way they reactivate when you try to layer them. They also get this weird shine if you apply them too thickly. So pretty, though...

Watched one of your videos, fell straight in love with your way of reviewing and talking about things and now I seem to be watching them all at once. I love the initial wash on this (this is also a green I love to make and I don’t make many greens). Such a shame companies aren’t sorting their binders out and getting rid of animal products. It’s stupid really as many artsy people are vegetarian and vegan and the world is heading that way, especially younger and future generations. You’d think companies would want to impress people early in their art journeys and be vegan friendly (I eat 100% plant based and won’t use animal hair paintbrushes but can’t say I’m vegan yet because of my non vegan paint magpieism- main,t I just can’t help buying shcminke paint even if I can’t spell it.
