To be honest, every player with a decent level of play do this in their game. and the anticipation is not only the secret to the forehand smash, but also the main reason that you can be early to the shuttle and be able to hit a good quality shot. what you probably wont notice in this video is that when lin dan is not waiting for the lift to his forehand, he will be anticipating other shots to come (and if it comes he will punish the opponent by taking it early in that corner). that means that this video tells how to be early to every single corner of the court. one of shuttle flash's videos is called "badminton is anticipation" and that is so true. the biggest difference between players on a higher level is: 1. Shot quality. 2. Cover less corners and anticipate the opponents shots. The second one is the most important as that makes it much easier to have a good shot quality. So what do we learn from that? The most important thing to learn as a badminton player is how to cover less corners and read your opponents shots! Something to think about for all players out there that only practise on speed and power in their training and forget about the most important things.

Corresponding to the last video "STRATEGY : Lin DAN against LEE Chong Wei", I find that, when the shuttle is at the net, Lee is more intended to move toward the net and get the net play; However, Lin Dan is more intended to step back for smashing. You cannot say which one is better. But I think that may be a reason why we sometimes see Lee is late for the deep forehand corner, and cannot do more variations.

it is a normal footwork for every left handed players but his anticipation to opponent's shots is very good and his shot making ability let him stand unique.

PG. LCW, taufik all have great footwork. What LD has over them is mental smartness and toughness which make LD look like he has good foot work. PG and LCW actually work harder but LD win because he out think them.

Badminton is a very defensive game actually. A bit like defensive driving where you think of all the bad things that can happen on the road. For example, a car not stopping at a stopline, a truck swerving out suddenly, etc. Good players anticipate shots and prepare for it. You just don't play badminton in a reactive manner, i.e. just responding to yr opponent's play alone. Anticipation calls for quick reflexes and fitness and being light on your feet. Having a good game head also matters... Both Lin Dan and LCW are supreme athletes. But Lin Dan seem a more natural player like Zhao Jianhua of old. Lin Dan is probably more ruthless on court than LCW, perhaps that is why he often beats him. LCW needs to be more aggressive and stop shuttles about. And note that Lin Dan always loses when he is not so fit. His game demands it more so.

@@buckrogers5331 no not really lcw was much more impressive, but Id smashes where powerful. Badminton is a total offensive game, rallies exist to waste energy, reaping there offensiveness. Drops aren't meant to win points, but prepare for a better smash. Play style gets ruined if your only defensive and decisive.

Nice video, bro. Just one more thing to add in. I think his incredible anticipation also plays a huge contribution to his footwork and his awesome forehand smash. When you watch him play, you can see that it seems like he can guess what's coming up next, and that makes him dominant the play.

There are certain directions that the shuttle always follows. If you push the shutte to the down corner on the left of right-handers, for example, they have to use backhand to return the shuttle, then the shuttle always goes straight (not diagonally) to the other court. The opponent can reach the place first and either smash (left-handed) or drop shot (right handed). Lin was able to force the opponents to follow his shots due to the power of theirs.

I've been playing badminton for about 1.5 years now. I got into it because I needed to rehabilitate my ankle since I sprained it. I found myself addicted to the sport, learned, and improved at a very fast rate. A month ago I finally hit a plateau but your footwork videos have recently made me reevaluate myself allowing me to improve yet again in a short period of time. Even my friends who have been playing for 10 years think I'm doing an amazing job (I'm no pro but I definitely think I'm doing really well - enough to call myself more than an amateur/beginner at this point). Thank you for these videos; without them, I wouldn't have been able to get where I am now. My next thing I want to focus on now is anticipating shots instead of just covering vulnerable spots.

You can also anticipate on the back hand side, but your opponent's shot needs to be a cross court lift/push. By anticipating, you don't have to move too early, but after netting, your first shuffle back already gives you enough momentum to do a backward movement and then smash. The key not to turn your body because you won't be fast enough, but you do move your right leg straight back.
