The words “Four score and seven years ago” are among the most famous in American history. But what do they mean? What was Abraham Lincoln trying to accomplish in his timeless Gettysburg Address? The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum explains the speech, separates myth from fact and looks at an original handwritten version in the latest “Lincoln 101” video. Whether you’re a student doing research or just a fan of history, you’ll learn something new and find out where to go for more detail.

Even Licoln himself said" that speech wont Scowl" Meaning he didnt love his speech. Many accounts and news reports afterwards complained the speech was too short. So to be fair there were many negatives. However history will always forever say it was one of the greatest spechees of all time. In time and history it def was one of the greatest speeches of our time. Just its also interesting to see reality and both sides. At the time, hours, days after the speech I doubt it had the impact on a nation as history a century later made it out to be. But its ok. Good for Lincoln. He suffered for so long. He had a hard hard miserable presidency. He saw the carnage and felt responsible for hundreds of thousands of young mens lives. After the war was over Lincoln had many few nights that he probably smiled. Finally after years of death and destruction and guilt. Finally peace!!! No more death. He at least had time to prob get a decent night sleep. But than he was assasinated. Poor Mary Lincoln. The sorrow and anguish she had to live through. She never ever was right after losing her 2 sons. So after losing Abe the poor woman after years was sent to a mental institution. Its all just a shame. Abe Lincoln was a good man. Its a shame he never had a chance to enjoy his place in american history. He is now revered as one of the greatest american presidents.

Star Gazer Please see my comment regarding what Lincoln said about his address. He said to his friend Ward Hill Lamon the the speech “won’t scour”, a term from his prairie days.

I find it interesting that he says that "The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here." when there are millions of people who have the speech memorized.

What he told his friend Ward Hill Lamon is that the speech “won’t scour”, a term from his prairie days. It’s meaning is that the soil has no sand in it to shine the plow blade. He believed his address was a failure and won’t scour.
